1 dead, 1 hurt in Laguna Niguel crash
SUV was speeding on freeway, CHP reports.
LAGUNA NIGUEL – A 28-year-old Downey man died Wednesday night when the sport utility vehicle he was driving at more than 100 mph overturned on the freeway, the California Highway Patrol reported.
The accident occurred at about 8:45 p.m., a few moments after CHP officer John Craig spotted a 2000 Chevrolet Silverado speeding in the southbound carpool lane of the San Diego (I-5) Freeway, the CHP reported.
Craig positioned his police cruiser about 300 feet behind the Silverado but had not turned his emergency lights when he saw the driver pull to the right and cross the double yellow line in an erratic manner. The Silverado crossed two lanes and hit the rear of a Mercedes in a traffic lane.
The impact of the crash caused the Silverado to overturn and roll onto its roof. The driver, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected and landed on the shoulder. The Mercedes was able to pull to the side and its driver, Ronald Pulley, 47, of San Clemente, was not hurt.
Marcelino Galindo, 28, the driver of the Silverado, was pronounced dead at the scene. His passenger, Erika Peterson, 25, of Norwalk, was taken to Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo with moderate injuries.
Investigators said alcohol appeared to be a factor in the crash
