Q and A with Bruce Treby

20 Questions with Bruce Treby

Questions Asked By Vaughn Whynot

Answers by Bruce Treby

Photos by Scott McClellan

State Your Name, Age & current Location you are at?

Bruce Treby, 21, and I live in Little Harbour, NS

How’s she going?

Things are going great! I’m healthy, back in school and skating as much as I can when the weather is good. It’s been raining for almost a month straight now.

So Bruce when you were a kid, what made you start skaten?

I started skating when I was in grade 7 cause I seen a few older guys doing it and it looked fun. I tried it once and was hooked!

Who did you look up to when growing up (pros, People)?

I mostly looked up to the local guys but for pros I really like Deawon Song and Jamie Thomas

So who are your sponsors these days…and how did this happen, where you a video-tape kid or did they find you?

I ride for Homegrown Skateboards and Ipath Footwear.  Homegrown just kinda found me and I got hooked up with Ipath after “The Burning Whale Project” was released.

It must have been fun filming parts for the Homegrown Video. Do you have an interesting story from the whole time filming?

Yeah, I had a great time filming. I’d say the most interesting story from the whole thing is that I was working 6 days a week and filming only after work and on Sundays. It made it interesting, especially when we had to drive a few hours to some spots. All in all it was a great time!

Hey Treby, do you mind me calling you Treby; do you have any hobbies besides skating?

Everyone calls me Treby, even my girlfriend does too! When I’m not skating I’m usually snowboarding or causing trouble for someone.

What are you views on the harassment skater get from, police, bikers/bladders and local mouths? Have you ever encountered arguments or fight because of being a skater?

I’m so sick of getting razzed and harassed by the police and other “authority figures”. I mean sure their doing a job but this whole helmet law thing has gone too far. I can’t count the number of times I’ve been kicked out of spots as soon as I roll up. I haven’t gotten in a fight but there have been some close calls.

Do you still believe skaten is about roots or is it something else these days?

I like to think skating is about roots but every little kid always asks who you’re sponsored by or if you’re pro or am and how could they get sponsored. I think a lot of kids are skating for the wrong reasons these days.

So anything coming up these days with you (mags, videos, new product) or you keeping low?

I’ve been keeping it pretty low key this year. It was a pretty rough one for injuries.

I saw that footy of your bail….your a real trooper for getting back into the scene, I also heard you where more worried for your tattoo then your body, what was you thinking?

That was a rough little patch for me but I’m good to go now. Yeah I didn’t realize how serious it was until after the surgery but your right. I was worried bout my tattoo. I went back to the rail and cut the kink off to keep it for a trophy and decided to try it again and slammed on my face. Lost a tooth and knocked myself clean out. I didn’t know who anyone was or what happened for a good 10 or 15 minutes. Needless to say I’m not going back…lol

Here are a few simple questions, Fav AM this year?

Ryan Decenzo

Fav Pro?

Jereme Rogers, He’s so well rounded on everything.

Last Skate Video you watched?

DVS skate more

Last Mag you read or book?

I haven’t had time for anything but school work….

Biggest Fear?

Not scared anymore. I already lost a tooth skating…might get one for Christmas though!

Trick you’re stoked on? Trick your trying to get down?

Pretty much anything on a rail. And I’ve been trying to get tre flips…..

Saying over used?

Do you think Skate Style is Important, and is this g-unit and/or emo getting out of hand?

Thanks for your time…hope to see you kick'in around the area around here. Any last words or props for anyone? P.S. Did you see the Hali-Park, She’s looking sexy.

Thanks to Jesse at Homegrown, Shayne and Mike at S & J for the Ipath gear, Brad Macdonald, Travis Francis, Scott Maclellan and everyone else I’ve forgotten you know who you are.

On April 9th, 2007 Emerica posted an article and an interview about signing Jerry Hsu.

Emerica Article:
No more guessing. You nailed it. Please help us welcome super shredder Jerry Hsu to Emerica Footwear and Gear. Have you seen Enjoi’s Bag Of Suck video? What about Man Down from the Tilt Mode Army? If you just said no twice, it’s sincere-iously time to wake up from the coma you’ve been in and get your ass down to your local skate shop for a screening! Everyone else, ’nuff said--you already know that Jerry’s skating is truly of epic proportions!

A longtime friend of Emerica, NorCal ruler Jerry fits in with the team like a brand-new pair of our shoes: absolutely perfect! In addition to joining the distinguished pros of Emerica Footwear, Jerry will also accompany Heath Kirchart and am Marquis Preston on Emerica Gear, and start breaking shi*t off for the next Emerica video, Stay Gold, coming in 2008. Daaaaayum! Jerry's interview is already up, so go dive on in for more details. Welcome to Emerica, Jerry!

Interview:
How and when did you start skating?
1992. It was a gang initiation thing.
Who were you skating with at first?
Myself.
What terrain were you riding at first?
Flat ground and a piece of wood with a 2 x 4 under one end.
Who were some early influences on your skating?
The bad, older kids with green hair and 42-inch waist jeans.
Do you enjoy skating in contests?
No.
How could contests be improved?
Weapons.
What is good / bad about being a pro?
Everything's good, nothing's bad.
What do you think of skate videos?
Less blah-blah-blah, more raw-raw-raw.
Which are your favorites?
Barbarians at the Gate.
Do you enjoy shooting video parts?
Oh, its the best!
Do you skate small stuff like curbs and parking bumps?
Exclusively.
Why are curbs not allowed in magazines and videos anymore?
They're not allowed anymore?!
When was the last time you saw a curb in a magazine or video? Do you skate vert ramps?
Not really. If I do, it’s toward the bottom where its flat.
Do you skate backyard pools?
I don't do pools.
What do you think of public concrete skateparks?
They’re a good place to sell shoe packages.
How could they improve the design?
By not letting complete boneheads design them.
Should skateparks copy real street spots like Love Park and EMB?
Yes, but security guards and homeless people should be included in the overall design.
How did you get on Emerica?
Bethany Regan is a close personal friend of mine.
What do you like about Emerica?
They're my bros and they pay for my crystal healing sessions in New Mexico.
Who do you skate with now?
Everybody.
Who are your favorite skaters of all time?
Tino Razo.
What have been the highlights of your skateboarding career?
I was on the BET Network once, I think.
Is there anything in skateboarding you haven't done that you'd like to accomplish?
A reality show and sports drink deal. Duh.
What do you enjoy besides skating?
I enjoy everything besides skating.
What music, art, books have you been enjoying lately?
Religious literacy by S. Prothero.
What are your future goals?
To floss every night.

With Year 3 of ZooYork’s Am Getting Paid coming to a close, we are very proud to look back on such a special event with so many great skateboarders. Adding the extra day to the event helped make the contest run smooth and welcomed more amateurs to battle it out for the $15,000 U.S. total prize.

Friday was a very important night for the Underworld skate team, where they had their world premiere for Yesterday’s Future, a video that they have been working on for the last few years. The place was packed, the drinks were full and the skating was next level. For more info and to view the teaser go to www.yesterdaysfuturevideo.com

Saturday was day 2 of the contest and displayed some of the best skateboarding all weekend. Magnus Hanson and Nick Merlino were having fun all day and were destroying all obstacles at South Parc. Jordan Hoffart and Keegan Sauder were some of the smoothest and most powerful skateboarders at the contest. Lastly, Chazz Ortiz blew the crowd away with his impressive skills, consistency, and courage… did we mention he is only 12 years old!

Saturday night was the Am’s getting laid party and the Wu Tang’s legendary member Raekwon was headlining. With over 300 people trying to get in to this sold out private party the energy was at an all time high. People chanted the choruses while chef Raekwon ripped the lyrics.

Sunday was the final day of the event and it was time to seperate the men from the boys. Micky Papa was leading throughout the whole semi finals with tricks such as kickflip backside smiths and switch treflips down the stairs. But when the finals came around it was Ryan Decenzo hailing from Vancouver, Canada that took first place position and the hefty cheque home. He had flawless runs all weekend, mixing techness with smoothness on a consistent basis run after run. Taking 2nd and 3rd place respectively were local Antoine Asselin, and Detroit’s Dustin Blauvelt. It would be impossible to name other notables over the weekend since the skating was at such a high level.

Proceeding the contest, Solo Mobile held the best trick on four obstacles. Nick Merlino and Dustin Blauvelt were the only hitting the big rail. With a bunch of skateboarders all busting out and getting paid it was Manny Santiago who took home the most money with a huge bag of tricks. Am Getting Paid is an international amateur skateboard event held every year and its mission is to continue to support and promote young amateur skateboarders to the rest of the world. We would like to thank all the skateboarders, sponsors, and parents. For more info and to check out the teaser for this weekends festivities please visit www.amgettingpaid.com, the full length DVD will release in January.

Zoo York's Am Getting Paid is returns to South Parc for this year’s contest. We want to give a big thank you to Dan Cordeiro and Dan

“The contest is the weekend before the "West 49 Open" in Toronto.  This is a great opportunity for skate companies to come into Eastern Canada and promote their pro and amateur teams simultaneously. There is opportunity to organize demos and/or in store signings in between the two contests in different cities.  Or you can simply get footage and film for your upcoming videos. Montreal and Toronto definitely have some of the best street spots in North America,

The Zoo York's AM Getting Paid contest is meant to support and stimulate the growth of future professional skateboarders as well as promote the skateboard industry.

Last year's Zoo York AM Getting Paid DVD is available! Contact us to get a copy www.amgettingpaid.com

For immediate release

August 15th, 2006 The "Zoo York’s Am Getting Paid" skateboard contest is proud to announce the Chef Raekwon from New York's legendary WU TANG CLAN has just been confirmed as the main act for the infamous "Am Getting Laid" after party.  "The Wu Tang clan has such a strong attachment in the skateboard world and countless tracks are featured in so many skateboard videos” explains contest promoter, Alex Bastide.

"Never appearing in Montreal, it was a no brainer for this legendary MC to play our after-party. Also recently added to the Saturday night lineup, Montreal's up and coming mash-up DJ's,Team Canada.

Born in Staten Island, NY, and raised in the park hill projects, Raekwon is presently one of the most popular Wu-Tang Clan members in the game. Raekwon may not have achieved the solo stardom of his fellow Wu-Tang Clan mates Method Man or Ol' Dirty Bastard, but along with Genius/GZA and frequent partner Ghostface Killah, he's done some of the most inventive, critically acclaimed work outside the confines of the group. Also nicknamed the Chef (because he's "cookin' up some marvelous sh*t to get your mouth watering"), Raekwon joined the Staten Island, NY-based Wu-Tang collective in the early '90s and played an important role on their groundbreaking late-1993 debut album, Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers).

Following his 1994 debut single, "Heaven and Hell," his own solo debut, Only Built 4 Cuban Linx, appeared in 1995; while it didn't sell on the level of Method Man's Tical, singles like "Ice Cream" and "Criminology" earned him a strong reputation in the hip-hop underground. Moreover, the album received near-unanimous critical praise for its evocative, image-rich storytelling and cinematic Mafia obsession.

The " Zoo York’s Am Getting Paid" is an international skateboard contest in its 3rd year running.  Held on September 22nd through the 24th, this years total purse is at a whopping $15,000 USD.  This years contest is scheduled to be the biggest Eastern amateur contest to date with over 200 riders participating from around the world.

The " Zoo York’s Am Getting Laid" after-party is on Saturday, September 23rd, doors open at 10pm.

This will be a weekend not to miss!

The tickets are available at: Underworld, Off the Hook, Universe, Empire, South Parc, Juste pour Rire, Clubzone.com and Admission
