Whistler Skateboar Association and the Longhorn present to
you a Skateboard Rail jam Contest/ Fundraiser.

On Thursday, September 28, 2006, The Whistler Skateboard Association will be holding a fundraiser event at the Longhorn Saloon in Whistler. We will be setting up scaffolding on the patio and creating a street-style rail/ledge setup where skaters will be able to perform tricks on the obstacles and down the stairs. There will be two hours where the ramp is open for the public to have fun on (5pm to 7pm), and then in the evening (7pm to 9pm) we will be hosting a full-on competition where skaters will be competing for cash and prizes. As well, there will be live music and other stuff going on got anyone who comes to hang out and support the Whistler Skateboard Association, a non-profit community driven group formed to help take care of some of the many skateboard related issues in Whistler, especially the underground skatepark in Creekside. After the competition, there will be the video premiere of The Peanut Gallery, a locally produced skateboard film, and then the party will continue all night. This event will go on rain or shine, we have planned for tents and coverings for the ramps and of course, everyone can hang out inside,  listen to live music and, of course, have a great time.

We will be having three main categories of first-place prizes, with a $200 cash prize given to the skater who performs the best trick on the rail, on the ledges, and down the set of stairs, each. In addition to the cash prizes, we will be giving away lots of gear to the skaters for second and third places, as well as give-aways.. As well, there will be tons of shwag give-aways for the crowd, as well as raffles for some higher ticket items such as complete skateboards from the local shops.

Some of the supporters of this event are Longhorn Saloon, UnderExposed Media Group, Nomis Clothing, Westbeach the shop, Evolution, Katmandu, Red Bull, Gauge Clothing, SkateboardVillage.com and Ogio Bags.

Although an intimate dinner and drinks with my friends was all that I wanted for my birthday, waking up at 5:30am the next day wasn’t ideal.  I rolled into gate 86 at YVR around 7am. Turns out I wasn’t the only one taking an early flight to San Diego; our flight turns into a reunion for snowboard industry types.  On board was Dice K Maru, Transworld senior photographer, Jamieson, Redbull’s team and marketing manager, Risto Scott, Billibong team manager, as well as Teneya Nash and Matt Chamberlain from Nomis. Oh ya, lets not forget the filmer photographer types that weaseled there way into first class… Damon Pyett and Sean Hoglin.

California is sunny and warm, who would have expected otherwise. I tag along with Sean and Damon who’ve rented a car and we head up the coast towards LA.  We poked our heads out the window, scoping surfs spots along the way, and of course make a pit stop at Wahoo’s for some fish tacos.

Our destination is Irvine, which just happens to be home to Oakley headquarters, and the location of Misschief Film’s world premier. Last night was by far the most elaborate party I have ever experienced. Oakley was packed, close to 1000 people inside and probably that many people again outside. Open bar, amazing DJ’s and no shortage of beautiful women made for an eventful and exciting evening. I vaguely remember kevin sansalone sneaking beer into the party... which is kind of interesting considering drinks were free.

When Ro Sham Bo hit the screen everyone went crazy. Fabia Grueebler and Amber Stackhouse produced an exciting all girls snowboard film.  The soundtrack was amazing, as well at the editing of Per-Hampus. Anne Flore Marxer and Natasha Zurek had stand out parts, along with new comers Spencer O'Brien and Marie France Roy. Overall the film was a huge step in the right direction for womens snowboarding, and I highly recommend all you ladies picking up a copy when it hits stores in the next couple of weeks. Check projectmisschief.com to peep the teaser.

Anyways, I need to nurse this hangover, and maybe go ride a few waves, I’ll talk you ya’ll tomorrow.

- jeff

Snowboard News: NOMIS Mushroom Box
By: NOMISDesign

Big and beautiful. No we aren’t talking about a jungle princess, or the latest hamburger from McDonald’s. We’re talking about the new Mushroom Box brought to you by NOMIS, from the mind of Simon Chamberlain. While it doesn’t come with voluptuous curves or even a side of fries, it is 32 feet long and 16 feet wide with the capabilities of being converted into a wall ride. Simon and friends will be breaking in the new box all summer long at Camp of Champions, so get your fries to go and get up there!T-and-Dave-Mush.Box.jpg

Shredding and cake fights the boys had it all!

To start things off, Andre was choice A and Simon was Choice B, so thanks to everyone that sent in their answers.  Saturday was the big day so we spent the morning up at Camp of Champions, sliding and bonking the rails and such. In the words of Chamillionaire, we were "riding dirty!"

For dinner, all the Camp of Champions campers came out to the park where we all gorged ourselves on hotdogs and birthday cake.

Everyone left with a full stomach, and a hand full of presents from NOMIS and Stepchild, so I guess it wasn’t just Simon and Andre’s birthday!  Just the way Simon and Andre would have wanted it. Thanks to everyone for coming out and we'll see you all next year.

Snowboard News: Big Bear Shop Trip
By: NOMISDesign

An all expense paid trip to Big Bear Mountain, with the NOMIS team... Does life get any better? I think not!

The first annual NOMIS “A Day in the Life,” shop appreciation trip went off in a big way and everyone involved agreed it must become an annual event. NOMIS gave away a four day all expense paid trip to a shop to attend a week long photo shoot and chilling session with team riders, and NOMIS staff.

mags-IMAGE-6.gif
The crew from left to right: Derek Dennison, John Paul Pardy, Joey Sexton, Chad Holmes, Keaton Pearson, and Steve Rose

The rental car rolled into “The Block Hotel” in Big Bear California, packed to the brim. Its occupants included NOMIS team riders Joey Sexton, Chad Holmes, and Derek Dennison, being guided by Steve Rose; along with John Paul Pardy, and Keaton Pearson from the winning store, Board Paradise out of North Carolina.

A feast at a resort that a snowboarder can only afford when on the company's travel budget.

magsIMAGE-5.0.gif
Some call it crail nose, others call it nuclear, Joey S. likes to call it tweaked.

Unlikely weather consisting of pouring rain, blizzard like snow, dense fog, and select minutes of sunshine sums up the first three days of the trip. The final day turned out to be the typical warm bluebird spring riding conditions we had headed to So Cal for, and the features at Big Bear didn’t let us down. Other than riding the sick park, our crew went on late night rail mission and an evening half pipe photo shoot. The lack of sleep however did not slow anyone down or keep them from smiling, laughing, and throwing high fives.

Chad taking to the pipes after the clouds didn't cooperate for hitting the jumps.

Derek enjoys late night action and here is another example.

All in all, the trip was a huge success. A couple few big thanks go out to: John and Keaton from Board Paradise, Liko, Rich, Savanah, and the peeps at “The Block Hotel,” Justin Meyer and Paul Amyot for all the filming and photography, Johnny Miller for showing us some “spots,” and last but not least Kim, Marty, Clayton and the rest of the staff and park crew at Big Bear, you guys are sick!

Look forward to seeing all of you again soon!
