A few weeks ago a bunch of us packed up our passports and bottle openers and decided to drive down from the big smoke to the big apple to do a little bit of that good stuff called skateboarding. Five short days later we were back, but we returned with a heap of stories and a little bit of footage. The following is none of that, but instead just a brief glimpse at some of the down time between awesomeness. Enjoy.

NYC TRIP    <-- Lookin’ hard just comes easily to some. It seems these guys struggle with it more than most. From Brooklyn; Manhattan island, Bud Patterson, Joey Maher, Nik Sexton, Nacho and Ian St. Aubin.

NYC TRIPNYC TRIP

NYC TRIP    Stuff you’d expect to see in NYC that’s not the Empire state building, the Statue of Liberty or some guy getting jacked on the corner (we did get to see those things too). --->

NYC TRIP    <--Nacho, Nick Wilton and his girlfriend Leiko all happened to be in town the same weekend that we were. Pretty sweet timing. They were there to see the Wu Tang play and Nacho also came to take naps at all of New York’s famous skate spots. He did a pretty good job of it too. Here he dreams of someday being on top of the world.NYC TRIP

Bud and Joey take a minute between awesomeness. Nacho naps behind a pillar while Joey tries to remember if he turned the stove off before he left the country. -->

NYC TRIP   <--- Forget sleep walking, Nik would sleep skate all night long. It was pretty rad at first but got kinda old around 6:30am when you’re trying to sleep and he keeps landing on you.

Q and A with Bruce Treby

20 Questions with Bruce Treby

Questions Asked By Vaughn Whynot

Answers by Bruce Treby

Photos by Scott McClellan

State Your Name, Age & current Location you are at?

Bruce Treby, 21, and I live in Little Harbour, NS

How’s she going?

Things are going great! I’m healthy, back in school and skating as much as I can when the weather is good. It’s been raining for almost a month straight now.

So Bruce when you were a kid, what made you start skaten?

I started skating when I was in grade 7 cause I seen a few older guys doing it and it looked fun. I tried it once and was hooked!

Who did you look up to when growing up (pros, People)?

I mostly looked up to the local guys but for pros I really like Deawon Song and Jamie Thomas

So who are your sponsors these days…and how did this happen, where you a video-tape kid or did they find you?

I ride for Homegrown Skateboards and Ipath Footwear.  Homegrown just kinda found me and I got hooked up with Ipath after “The Burning Whale Project” was released.

It must have been fun filming parts for the Homegrown Video. Do you have an interesting story from the whole time filming?

Yeah, I had a great time filming. I’d say the most interesting story from the whole thing is that I was working 6 days a week and filming only after work and on Sundays. It made it interesting, especially when we had to drive a few hours to some spots. All in all it was a great time!

Hey Treby, do you mind me calling you Treby; do you have any hobbies besides skating?

Everyone calls me Treby, even my girlfriend does too! When I’m not skating I’m usually snowboarding or causing trouble for someone.

What are you views on the harassment skater get from, police, bikers/bladders and local mouths? Have you ever encountered arguments or fight because of being a skater?

I’m so sick of getting razzed and harassed by the police and other “authority figures”. I mean sure their doing a job but this whole helmet law thing has gone too far. I can’t count the number of times I’ve been kicked out of spots as soon as I roll up. I haven’t gotten in a fight but there have been some close calls.

Do you still believe skaten is about roots or is it something else these days?

I like to think skating is about roots but every little kid always asks who you’re sponsored by or if you’re pro or am and how could they get sponsored. I think a lot of kids are skating for the wrong reasons these days.

So anything coming up these days with you (mags, videos, new product) or you keeping low?

I’ve been keeping it pretty low key this year. It was a pretty rough one for injuries.

I saw that footy of your bail….your a real trooper for getting back into the scene, I also heard you where more worried for your tattoo then your body, what was you thinking?

That was a rough little patch for me but I’m good to go now. Yeah I didn’t realize how serious it was until after the surgery but your right. I was worried bout my tattoo. I went back to the rail and cut the kink off to keep it for a trophy and decided to try it again and slammed on my face. Lost a tooth and knocked myself clean out. I didn’t know who anyone was or what happened for a good 10 or 15 minutes. Needless to say I’m not going back…lol

Here are a few simple questions, Fav AM this year?

Ryan Decenzo

Fav Pro?

Jereme Rogers, He’s so well rounded on everything.

Last Skate Video you watched?

DVS skate more

Last Mag you read or book?

I haven’t had time for anything but school work….

Biggest Fear?

Not scared anymore. I already lost a tooth skating…might get one for Christmas though!

Trick you’re stoked on? Trick your trying to get down?

Pretty much anything on a rail. And I’ve been trying to get tre flips…..

Saying over used?

Do you think Skate Style is Important, and is this g-unit and/or emo getting out of hand?

Thanks for your time…hope to see you kick'in around the area around here. Any last words or props for anyone? P.S. Did you see the Hali-Park, She’s looking sexy.

Thanks to Jesse at Homegrown, Shayne and Mike at S & J for the Ipath gear, Brad Macdonald, Travis Francis, Scott Maclellan and everyone else I’ve forgotten you know who you are.

The first UNDERWORLD skate event of the summer went down this past weekend. The contest was a Game of Skate on ledges presented by ADDICT clothing. The contest was relocated from Granville Street to under the Cambie Bridge due to rain. Luckily enough the Vancouver scene is a tight community and all the heads showed up anyway. The qualifiers were very intense, and the skaters very consistent. The most outstanding game was Bradley Sheppard vs. Spencer Hamilton - they probably threw down 30 to 40 tricks first try (no joke), it was completely ridiculous. Bradley ended up beating Spencer and moved into the final round against Paul Trep and Magnus Hanson. The crowd was silenced while the final 3 skaters battled for the 300$ winner takes all offered by ADDICT clothing. Bradley Sheppard was the first out and then Paul Trep got beat out leaving Magnus Hanson as the big champ of the day.

After the Game Of SKATE we had a Best Trick Contest on the elevated ledge brought by the SweatshopSkate Park.

Here’s some of the highlights of the best tricks:

Spencer Hamilton: Kick Flip bs nose grind big spin out

Ryan Bonnell heel flip bs lip

Paul Trep Fakie five – 0 360 shove it out

And the winners were:

Mike Vince Switch smith fs big spin out

Scott Decenzo fakie crook half cab flip out

Candy Hill, we up in Magic City.
They in here looking pretty.

[Chorus:Candy Hill]
Boy, I know a place you'll never wanna leave,
Only in your dreams, it's reality.
(huh huh) Do you wanna go to Magic City with me?
(huh huh) With me?
Anything I want, I'll drive.
What I need, You got it.
A little dance, I'll dance for ya.
Oh, for real? No problem.
Anything you got, if you want it.
That's what I need, I gotcha boy.
Do that dance dance dance.
Come to Magic City with me.

[Verse 1:Royal City]
I'm from the west, but I lean and I rock.
In the club, 20 G's in the watch.
Shortys hard, I gotta make her mine for the night.
She got an apple bottom, my momma feed her right.
I'm like, My name is Royal City girl,
And I was wonderin' if you would take me to your world.
Heard that there's a place you got,
That both me and you could go.
I won't let my momma know,
We could keep it on the low.
So it's on bring me to your city girl,
I could be your volunteer, you'll be my magician girl.
Back to the room, she put me on the chair.
Just a touch of magic her jeans disappear.

[Verse 2:Unk]
Yo. Come wit me (aye), Come wit me (aye).
Aye, girl what's your fantasy?
Yo. Come wit me (aye), Come wit me (aye).
Aye, tell me what's your fantasy.
You see I glide through something new, the chrome is on the wheels,
I take a trip to Magic City, wanna cop a feel?
The club packed, she wanna pull disappearing acts.
[Magic City lyrics on http://www.metrolyrics.com]

Took her to the VIP, she busted it open and she throwed it back.
With a little Remy, blowing on on some good chush.
20 stacks, watch it glare, give your shades a better look.
She loosen up my belt, whispered words that she felt.
Type of friend, do your dance girl, go on and 2 Step.

[Chorus:Candy Hill]
Boy, I know a place you'll never wanna leave,
Only in your dreams, it's reality.
(huh huh) Do you wanna go to Magic City with me?
(huh huh) With me?
Anything I want, I'll try it.
What I need, You got it.
A little dance, I'll dance for ya.
Oh, for real? No problem.
Anything you got, if you want it.
That's what I need, I gotcha boy.
Do that dance dance dance.
Come to Magic City with me.

[Verse 3:Laze]
One minute, two minute, three minute, four,
She dancin' for me now, she's somethin' like a pro.
Call her Miss Houdini cause she's magic with her lips,
Like abracadabra she know where to kiss.
That's somethin' I ain't never seen before,
By the way she move I gotta put her in my video.
This is Magic City, my personal fantasy world,
Where I could do whatever with my fantasy girl.
It's 12 o'clock so she know, how I roll.
By one o'clock, she gonna take it to the floor.
Just like magic, take it down low.
Take me to your magic place, baby I ain't tryin' to wait.

[Bridge:Royal City]
Like hocus pocus give me one wish.
Take me away be my magical chick.
Im'a go to magic city with you,
So baby come to magic city with me.
Like hocus pocus give me one wish.
Take me away with your magical tricks.
Im'a go to magic city with you,
So baby come to magic city with me.

 Interview with Ruben Najera
Questions and lifestyle photo by “Scoffman
Action shot by Sheyla V.

So before we get started are there any shout-outs you want to give? Definitely!!! All of my sponsors!! Jason at SCOFF skateboarding hell yea indestructible laces man!!!Mike G. at ) nice skate shoes, STRUGGLE skateboards, Lisa at Destructo & Speed Metal, Jason at Gripgum, Eric at OGIO, John at Thiesnuts hardware, Lisa at Peter Grimm, Dylan at olliepop, Scotty at Taildevil and  Isaac at Cali Boardwear. I would also like to thank my beautiful lady Sheyla in which I adore and love. She supports me 100%. And my family of course no doubt!!!

So how did you come about to be on the Scoff team? Well I think it was an email I received from you back in the day. I believe I am one of the original riders. The concept was so rad and I had never seen anything like it. You truly have to get a pair of laces to see what I mean. It takes forever to tear through. It’s as if there’s some magic powers embodied within the laces.

How long have you been skateboarding for? About 7 years give or take.

What first got you into it?My cousin JC and some dude in high school that I used to watch skate.

Who did you look up to when you were first getting started?

Some local skateboarder they called “Q” that dude was so tech and was ollieing like 7 boards back in the day it was amazing to watch when I was younger.

What kinds of trouble do you and your buddies get into while skating? Have you ever been arrested before? Aww man hell yea. The Struggle guys and I have been through a lot. We are always running from the cops. Also way back in the day I remember getting tackled by an officer because we were running from him in a spot. Guess the guy thought we stole something. They ended up taking me and three other guys to jail; we sat in there the whole day until my friends mom bailed us out. They put us in one of those rooms where you can’t see through the mirror but they can see you, it was a trip. They put us in handcuffs and everything, threw us in the cop car.

What’s your favorite skatespot? Aww man, the black box park is buttery, I like skating downtown and the manual pads at Torrey pines. I still haven’t found a spot that I truly love though or I could consider my favorite because I really am into skating new stuff all the time. I get tired of spots fast I guess.

What is it that you love most about skateboarding? The feeling you get cruising the streets. And how it takes your mind off of everything else shi*tty going on in the world.

You told me before that your sort skipping from place to place right now and living out of your car sometimes. How’s that going for you, found a permanent place to stay yet? Yea actually I am back in my hometown right now been here for a little while now about a week or two id say. Things were hectic the last 4 months of my life though. Pretty much you could say I lived out of my car and at fast food for 120 days. Or cup of noodle if I got lucky and found a microwave. It was harsh I also got in two huge car wrecks during all this man I went through so much crap. My car caught on fire and I had to jump out the window when I was involved in an insane car wreck while driving on the 5 coming from . I had no car after that and resorted to public transportation in order to get to and from my job. Which meant major couch crashing and an even unhealthier diet? But you know what I learned more and got a real taste of the street life through those tough times man. And I had my skateboard the whole way through.

If you’d never pick up a skateboard, what would you be doing today? Dude I would be up to no good. Maybe I wouldn’t even be alive. I thank god for skateboarding. Because of skateboarding I kept my head straight, I even met my girlfriend through it. Through all my hard times it kept me alright. It kept me sane in an insane world. I can thank it for so much good in my life. It has taken me a lot of places and I never want to put it down. Skate for life man. SKATE FOR LIFE.

My Blog: EA's SKATE™
By: Eeh_Boi

The closest thing to being on a skateboard, Electronic Arts (Nasdaq: ERTS) announced September 19, 2006 that SKATE will be released for the PlayStation®3 system and the Xbox 360™ video game and entertainment system in 2007. SKATE will deliver the feel of skating through innovative controls, authentic cameras and a fully reactive skateboarding city. The game so far features professional skaters such as Danny Way, Jerry Hsu, Chris Cole, Jason Dill, Dennis Busenitz, and PJ Ladd, as well as a reactive city and relevant in-game cameras that capture and deliver the most authentic skateboard videogame experience to date.

"Our game offers a skate mecca for both skaters and gamers in search of the definitive authentic skating video game experience," said Scott Blackwood, executive producer, EA Black Box. "We’re focused on capturing the actual feeling of skating with the innovative control system, the physics driven animations, and the intelligent cameras working together to really deliver the closest thing to being on a board."

SKATE’s unique control scheme captures the true feel of skating versus the typical button mashing gameplay of past skating games (Thrasher's Skate And Destroy, Grind Session & The Tony Hawk's Pro Skater Series). Featuring physics-driven animations, gamers will have a unique gaming experience every time they pick up the controller since no two tricks will ever be the same.

Developed by EA Black Box in Vancouver, British Columbia, SKATE will deliver all the style, fun, creativity and culture of skateboarding without the countless hours of practice, broken bones and hospital visits. SKATE has not yet been rated by the ESRB.
