My Blog: Bangerang!!
By: JennyG

Well well, i havent written one of these since summer! Its December already? Geez time gets away fast! Tons of shi*t has happened in my life since my last blog. So yea my summer was jammed packed with two jobs (serving and skating) But i managed to go to Penticton, BC for a week with a few friends.....good times for sure (we met random people), the skatepark was the funnest thing ever! After that I volunteered at slam city jam for a whole weekend and it was soo rad! I ended up actually skating the set up, including the vert ramp as well....It was Huge! I got to see Swollen Members up close (got to shake their hands oh yea!) I think im defintely gonna do that next year.

So this was my first year back at school since high school. Im going to Mount Royal College in Calgary and im taking a 4 year applied degree called Eco Tourism and Outdoor Leadership. It is seriously the best program anyone ever invented! The first day of school we had to climb this wall using only eachother to get up and over it. I was wearing a skirt that day, haha good times (i still did it of course). Anyways the people in the program are just as amazing, we are all tight!! Rock climbing, mountaineering, kayaing and canoeing are mandatory classes you have to take. We did some sick trips in the mountains, ive never been on such steep ridgelines in my life! I also had to get over my fear of being in caves, i would rather go rock climbing....which is ten times more dangerous. HAH! Next semester i have to take a wilderness survival course, should be interesting, cause i can only bring 3 items, and your not allowed to bring a sleeping bag or tent, not to mention that this is going to be in the middle of winter! So what would you bring??

UMM so other than i was in a relationship for 2 months, with a guy named AJ who is a rad skater......we are still friends.....I turned 20 in October (man i feel old, that was my last summer as a teen!)Got my nose pierced - didnt hurt at all. Im working at Canada Olympic Park im a snowboard instructor, my first shift is next week! Ive gotten out snowboarding a couple of times in the mountains, got pretty sore, it was sweet! I hope to get much more pow pow days in......

I went to the Killswitch Engage concert this week, and it was SOO good, they rock, you should check em out! (If you are hardcore that is)

Future news: Im going to be driving a car soon yay(well boo for polluting the enviroment and not using my bicycle) Also im going to Red Rocks, Nevada in February to do some rock climbing with people from my class! Im stoked!!

Well enjoy the snow! I know i am!

Catchya on the flip side

Ciao!

Today was qualifying rounds for the street and vert finals which are happening tomorrow. There were 5 heats on the streeet course and one on the vert ramp. Ryan Decenzo destroyed the street course with a flawless run and is the top street qualifier for tomorrow. Other notables on the street course were, Greg Lutzka, pulling a huge fakie flip down the big set in his run, Sascha Daley killing it with a full cab down the big set, Sheldon  Meleshinski ripping it with a backside 360 kickflip over one of the hips, Tony Trujulio maching around the course and then finishing his run by laying on his board and roling under the dog house, and Geoff Dermer nose manualling the skinny ledge with barely any speed.

Greg Lutzka, Fakie Flip

Between the 3rd and 4th heats, MC Supernatural layed down some sick freestyles and after the 5th heat, Blackalicious performed.

All in all it was an awesome day. Stay tuned for the final results tomorow night.

The first day of Slam City Jam went off with the DC Nationals, Es game of S-K-A-T-E and tons of pros warming up.

The DC Nationals is a Non-Profit Canada-Wide skateboard contest and the only event of its kind that gives Canadian amateur skaters a chance to showcase their talent on a National level.

Even though Sacha Daley had a wildcard entry into Slam's steet qualifier he needed to throw it down to pay his rent. With moves like a fontside boardslde and a clean swith kickflip over the loading dock he assured himself another 1st place DC national championship and $1000 cash.

Colin Nogue from Vancouver BC secured 2nd place and $750 with consistency and his fast skating style.

Josh Clarke got third with a solid run and a large ollie, he got creative and ollied off the stage and over the 4 set, making for one big 5.

Last years girls DC champion; Tamara Dryborough wasnt able to hold her title this year, but she did land herself in third place with a manly size nollie flip down a drop.

Kelsy Smith represented Alberta and held her 2nd place with fronside 180's and a tight frontside 360 indy out of the larger quarterpipe.

Kristin Zurwick from Castlegar Alberta took home the girls DC chamionship with a clean cosistent technical run.

Sascha Daley, Two time DC Nationals Champion

The Es Game of Skate was won by Micky Papa. He won a tight battle against east coast game of skate winner Will Cristofaro. These kids are definitely the future of skateboarding!!

Stay tuned for more coverage of Slam City Jam day 2!!

Lyn-z Adams Hawkins of Cardiff-By-The-Sea, CA, one of the world’s top female action sports athletes, will be at the Slam City Jam North American Skateboard Championships despite a leg injury which has kept her sidelined from the World Cup of Skateboarding Tour this summer.

Adams Hawkins missed the recent X Games 12 in Los Angeles but is demonstrating her commitment to the promotion and development of women’s skateboarding by making the trip to Calgary for Slam City August 25-27, 2006.

Described in some circles as the “rock’n’roll star of skateboarding”, Adams will perform a guest host role for Slam City TV, working to support main in-arena hosts Dave Duncan and Calgary’s own Tara Teigen. It marks the first time in the last five years that Adams will not be able to compete at Slam City Jam and do what she does best: Vert.

Adams was the gold medalist in Vert skateboarding at X Games 10 in 2004, silver medalist at X Games 11 in 2005 and has become one of the biggest stars in skateboarding at the age of 16.

“We’re committed to showcasing the best in skateboarding competition but if we can join forces with young stars such as Lyn-z to help promote skateboarding in other ways, especially among girls and women here in Canada and around the world, then that’s a big bonus for us as a core skateboarding event,” said Kleo Landucci, President of Slam City Jam. “We’ve been very impressed with what Lyn-z is doing for professional skateboarding and we’re pleased she has offered to support women’s skateboarding and Slam City in this way while she’s recovering from her injury. We of course look forward to having her back on the Vert ramp next year.”

Sponsored by DC Shoes and Apparel, Nixon Watches, Naked Juice, K-Five Boardshop, Innovation Sports, Type S Wheels in this order please, Adams has gained a global profile in skateboarding largely on the strength of her X-Games accomplishments alongside the sport’s legendary veterans. She is the first woman to land the 55-foot gap of Danny Way’s Mega Ramp, she was first in women’s Vert at the 2004 X-Games and last year was second only to veteran Cara-Beth Burnside of the U.S. last year. Burnside is the three-time defending Slam City Vert champion.

“Lyn-z Adams will be a name to be reckoned with for many years to come in skateboarding,” said Landucci. “We think even her presence at Stampede Park and in Calgary this month will do much to draw young female fans and families to the event.”

Check it out!!! We even have a seal from the Mayor!!!
Go to www.slamcityjam.com for more details.

Skateboarding Week Proclamation
In a move that reflects Calgary’s emergence as a new Canadian hotbed for skateboarding, Mayor Dave Bronconnier has officially proclaimed the week of August 21st to 27th, 2006 as “Skateboarding Week” in the City of Calgary.

Skateboarding Week in 2006 will take place in conjunction with Calgary’s hosting of the Slam City Jam North American Skateboard Championships, August 25-27 at Stampede Park. Slam City Jam is part of the World Cup of Skateboarding professional tour and is the longest-running skateboarding championship in the world.

“The proclamation of August 21-27 as Skateboarding Week simply recognizes the rise of the sport here in the City of Calgary and what it means as an important element of lifestyle and culture for our young people and young-minded people of all ages,” said Mayor Bronconnier, an active champion of events and activities for the Heart of the New West.

In the Official Proclamation, the Mayor outlines the rationale for the designation of Skateboarding Week: “Canadian skateboarders have brought international distinction to our country with their achievements and Calgary has developed and established a significant skateboard industry including some of the best new skate parks in North America and a thriving skateboard community supported by the City of Calgary Mobile Skate Parks Program.”

There are several new skate parks throughout Greater Calgary which have been built in cooperation with city officials and local skateboarders, and many more are planned for the future.

“We’re proud to be somewhat of a showcase for the local skateboarding community and we’re committed to working hard to help promote Calgary’s reputation as an emerging, dynamic skateboarding centre,” said Kleo Landucci, President of Slam City Jam, which is making its Calgary debut after 12 years in Vancouver. “We see Slam City as a forum for the skateboarding community to come together and celebrate our growth and we’re honoured to be holding the event in conjunction with Mayor Bronconnier’s proclamation of Skateboarding Week in the City of Calgary.”

CALGARY (Tuesday, August 15, 2006) –– Sascha Daley of Vancouver will be doing double-time at the Slam City Jam North American Skateboard Championships, August 25-27 at Stampede Park.

In addition to defending his DC Nationals amateur title on Friday, August 25th, at the Calgary Corral, Daley will compete in the Slam City Street championships Saturday, August 26th.

“We believe that providing opportunities like this for top amateurs is a big part of Slam City Jam and we’re pleased to see Canadian talent like Sascha Daley benefiting from this kind of wild card entry, approved by World Cup of Skateboarding,” said Kleo Landucci, President of Slam City Jam. “We’re pleased to have the DC Nationals and Es Game of Skate connected to our event to ensure a strong connection to the core of skateboarding, but we’re especially pleased to offer such a direct entry to a skater of Sascha’s potential.”

Daley, 19, is a product of Courtenay, B.C. He moved to Vancouver two years ago, won the DC Nationals in 2005 and was named to the DC Canadian national team.

“Sascha’s motivation and true grit attitude make him stand out among other skaters,” said Sean Hayes, team manager for DC Canada and a five-year veteran of the national team program. “He will try a trick until he literally can’t walk anymore and then try again the next day until he gets it.”

Daley will be up against other winners from the DC Nationals series of 80 contests run across Canada, featuring over 2,500 participants. Local qualifiers were held June 24-25 and Regionals July 22-23.

In the main event, Daley will be up against more than 100 of the world’s top professional skateboarders, including names such as Ryan Sheckler and Nyjah Huston of the U.S. and Chris Haslam of Richmond, B.C.

CALGARY (Thursday, August 10th, 2006) –– Ryan Sheckler of the United States is the first former champion to confirm his entry for the Slam City Jam North American Skateboard Championships to be held August 25-27 at Stampede Park.

The 16-year-old Californian, who won the silver medal at X Games 12 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles last weekend, will be among those competing for USD $100,000 in prize money at Slam City, the longest-running skateboarding event in the world and part of the World Cup of Skateboarding.

The multiple California state champion began skateboarding at the age of four in his driveway and by the age of seven, was doing tricks on his own backyard mini-ramp.

Teigen’s resume includes stints with CBC, OLN and Sportsnet in Canada and NBC and ESPN in the U.S. She has called the Winter X Games. Teigen appeared at the Crankworx Mountain Bike Festival last month in Whistler.

CALGARY (Friday, August 4th, 2006) – Single-day tickets for the Slam City Jam North American Skateboard Championships, a three-day festival of skateboarding, music and lifestyle to be held August 25-27 at Stampede Park, go on sale at all TicketMaster outlets on Friday, August 11th.

Groups of 20 or more single-day tickets can be purchased in advance at a 20% discount as early as this Friday, August 4th. Details regarding group sales and special discount offers can be found on the Slam City Jam website: www.slamcityjam.com.

Single-day tickets start at $21.50 for general admission for children under 12. Adult and youth general admission tickets are $27.00. Bronze tickets guaranteeing reserved seating in the Calgary Corral and access to see Tony Hawk’s Grand Jam, Friday, August 25th, are $24.00 for children and $30.00 for adults and youth.

“We’re still encouraging our fans to take advantage of our three-day SERIES Tickets, which offer a 20 per cent savings on regular admission and guaranteed access to see Tony Hawk perform on the Boom Boom Huck Jam in the Round-Up Centre, but we know lots of our fans can’t wait to get their hands on the single day performances of their choice,” said Kleo Landucci, President of Slam City Jam. “We wanted to remind our fans of their chance to buy SERIES Tickets now on line and over the phone and to reserve their single-day tickets beginning August 11th.”

Landucci noted there were still a limited number of Silver Slam SERIES Tickets available through www.ticketmaster.ca, but that all Grand Slam and Gold Slam SERIES Tickets had been sold out.

“We’re really pleased with the welcome we’ve received in Calgary this year and we’re excited to announce more of the big name entries this month,” said Landucci, who confirmed X Games star Ryan Sheckler of the U.S. yesterday and opened the summer countdown to Slam City by announcing popular Canadian skateboarder Chris Haslam of Richmond, B.C. on May 15th. “Having entries like Chris Haslam already confirmed is important for us and our fans. We’re also looking forward to announcing our music line up beginning next week.”

More than 100 hours of skateboarding, music and SK8 Expo programming are included in the cost of a three-day SERIES Ticket, which begin as low as $60.00 for Bronze Slam child. “There’s no better way for our fans to get the best seats at the best prices than with the three-day SERIES passes, but we’re very proud of our value pricing all the way around. We’ll be offering skateboarding, music and videos, plus our SK8 Expo and autograph signing sessions for the price of a movi.e and snacks and less than the price of most concerts, so we’re happy about being able to do that in our debut in Calgary, especially with a line up that also includes Tony Hawk and Eric Koston’s Es Game of Skate and the best Canadian amateurs in the DC Nationals.”
