Another reason to head to the Bourbon to party...

  THURSDAY, APRIL 17
Color Magazine and BLASTRAMP are hosting the official pre-party for Patrick O'Dell's photo exhibit being held the day after (Friday, April 18th) at Antisocial and presented by Altamont, Color, Vice, and Timebomb Trading.

“Born in Orange New Jersey, Leo Fitzpatrick spent most of his adolescence and teen years cruising the streets of New York with his friends on his skateboard. In the early 90’s, director Larry Clark began to take notice of the Big Apple’s transient youth culture. A few years later, inspired and script in hand, Clark began shooting the film Kids. Fitzpatrick was casted as the lead Telly, though at the time he had no film experience. Now a veteran to the television and film industry, Leo has made appearances on shows such as The Practice, The Wire, Law and Order: Criminal Intent and My Name Is Earl. In his many film roles, Leo has since worked with such Hollywood names as John Cusack, Kate Bekinsale, Selma Blair and Jake Gyllenhaal to name a few. Now showing his versatility, Fitzpatrick has added screenwriter and part time DJ to his list of titles. This will be Leo’s Vancouver debut as a DJ.” —Color Magazine

Road Trip to Sydney, Cape Breton - Nov. 8th, 07

Motivated by new skate parks and seemingly endless great weather this fall, we packed the car and hit the road Friday morning (October 5th) stoked for a fun packed weekend on Cape Breton Island. After many hours of gibber-jabber road banter we abruptly pull over to check out a rail in front of a church. Bruce & Mike are feelin' it and to the failing light a rail session goes down. A sweet end to a long day spent in the car. (Photos: After noon day prayer Mike Bernier Front Boards and Bruce Treby Back 50-50's, avoid the scourge of God, and leave one hard working' (old) rail something to be proud of.)

Not too early, but earlier than I like there's rustling in the room, the boys are pumped to get going, ah, its so easy! We stayed at the Beacon motel which is right across the street from the new Coxheath Skatepark. A Spectrum Concrete creation, the park has lots to offer once last night’s milk shakes/vomit are sopped up, pre-breakfast roll around in the heat of the October sun. Props to Megan Detheridge, Jim Barnum and everyone else in the community that have made Coxheath a reality, a huge asset to Sydney and a real training ground for the local skaters.

After getting our fill and checking out of the Beacon, we headed out on a "shore tour" to make the most of the afternoon. Our first stop is Glace Bay to check out a new bowl, also the work of Spectrum Skateparks. This would be the first "above ground" concrete bowl I've ever skated. Above ground you say? Why's that? "Well son; ya see, this whole area is right contaminated" from all the industrial work that went down here. "O I see so now its recreational land for the kids, OK THEN!" (Sydney area has huge industrial history)

Anyhow really fun, high speed corners with extensions for the Gnarl and a spine into a mini bowl to get the young ones into it. Well built and no graffiti yet! Fresh & new, nice job people. While I enjoyed the trany and caught up with local Steve Waden, Bruce drew a flood of kids to a "dangerous in every way" rail across the lot. The situation became a heat score so we carried on down the shore... (Photos: Mike Bernier 50-50's large hubba @ Glace Bay; Chug chug, Mike and Bruce get safe in someones boat)

The scenic coastline led us back to the Sydney waterfront where we found a nice high stage/wheely setup. Good times till the sun dropped and the wind off the water chased us back to the warmth and safety of the Delta hotel. After setting in to a few cocktails the fitness room, pool & hot tub facilities entertain us for the evening. There were some tense moments in the pool when Bruce Ass charlied some kid in the back coming out of the waterslide real fast, the Dad was right there watching the whole thing and yelled at his kid and made him cry adding insult to injury, we sighed relief and took off to Megan's house for some late night BBQ action.

Sunday mornin' brings a quick dip for the boys while Watson sleeps... fancy breakfast @ the Delta with Bruce, naked in a complementary robe, Bernier, and infamous Mackel. The service and food were probably the worst we've ever ate, especially for the price. Stopped in the elevator after by an old couple enjoying the small amount of time they have left, got to experience; one more punch, and entered complaining. Mackel found hair in his eggs. Or egg in his hair...Back to the car bound for home. Sydney folk are super hospitable (surprise surprize) and we all agreed that returning to the island is a must. A good example that you don't have to go far to find new spots, good times and interesting culture.

For two consecutive years in a row Matix team riders are named Skater of the Year. In 2006 Thrasher awarded Daewon Song Skater of the Year and 2007 Mark Johnson took S.O.T.Y. title. With the amount of coverage MJ’s been receiving in issues of every mag covering Lakai tours (not including his exclusive TWS issue and his three parts in Fully Flared), Marc is at the top of the S.O.T.Y. meter.

High Speed knows how to throw a serious party in celebration of the ubiquitous Skater of the Year award. Dae was drunken with happiness last year accepting the S.O.T.Y. award and we're hoping for another memorable intro from Gav… Good times are ahead for sure.

These parties are open to the public via ticket, so anyone’s invited. Besides it’s always a good time staring at Eben’s hot wife and listening to Bad shi*t again. You can be sure we’ll be repping MJ hard at Thrashers S.O.T.Y. party this January. Hope to see you there. Congratulations Marc!

Pro And Am Q&A: Tuesday, September 11, 2007

Q&A With Ted De Gros

With Vaughn Whynot

1st of all Ted, I would like to thank you on doing this Q&A with me for the fact as I am a fan of yours since you was a am on santa Cruz...and now your pro...that’s crazy. I feel honoured in doing this because it will show that pros are normal guys just skating for the fact of...well skateboarding…I will also keep this quick and easy because you must be very busy these days. So let’s begin.

VW - How’s life mate, just for the record state your name and your sponsors, also your hometown?

TDG - Hey. My name is Ted de Gros. I’m sponsored by Santa Cruz, Lakai, Indy and momentum. Life’s good, I’ve been in Santa Cruz for the last few months. Enjoying the weather and trying to learn to surf.

VW - I been seeing a lot of you in mags these days… which one was you more stoked about?

TDG - My favourite interview in the last couple years was in Transworld. I think it was 06 sometime. I got lucky and managed to shoot all the tricks in a few days. I didn’t really plan any of the tricks so it was a bonus.

VW - Your Parts In “Get Tricks Or Die Tryin'” And “Yesterday’s Future”, which was your fav places to skate in your parts and out of everyone else in that video…who did you get more stoked off of?

TDG - I don’t think I had a part in digital. I may have had some tricks in it. I was definitely in yesterday’s future though. I’ve been to a lot of really good spots but they’re really scattered. Barcelona is one of my favourite places to skate because I’m always so stoked just to be there that skating is funnier. The spots are amazing too. Texas is good. Florida and North CarolinaL.A. is really good but the driving is ridiculous. Vancouver is fun for me. All the homies. As far as other peoples parts in Yesterday’s future, Dermer was fun to watch. He didn’t have a lot of time but he was always stoked to go film for it. Carl Labelle is rad to skate with too. He loves skating the same way.   Dickson’s part was awesome. Gianmarco was rad too. He’s awesome to watch skate live. He’s got a lot of heart and likes to charge at shi*t.

VW - So now that you’re pro with Santa Cruz, what varies or differentiates from being an am?

TDG - Your pay is better and you get to see your name on a board. Other than everything feels the exact same. Your work and responsibilities are the same. Always gotta work for it.

VW - What is one trick that you are loving these days and which ones are you hating?

TDG - I’m loving mannys these days. I never took the time until the last couple years. I’ve always loved Rodney and Daewon but I thought I couldn’t do that stuff. It’s worth a try.   I hate three flips because my trucks are too tight.

VW - What’s your fav spot in Canada…and outside of Canada?

TDG - Everywhere in Canada is awesome but one of them is all the little islands that separate Vancouver from Vancouver Island. Saltspring, Galliano, Cortes. Number one place is Thormanby Island though. Only cause my family has had a cabin their for a few generations.

VW - What are your views on the helmet law in Canada?

TDG - What helmet law? Nobody out west has to wear helmets unless they just changed that.  In Santa Cruz you’re supposed to wear a helmet at the park. I bring mine and only put it on if the park ranger comes around. Works well.

VW - One trick you wish you had on lock down?

TDG - 1080 flips

VW - Craziest road trip?

TDG - The long ones across America with alien workshop were the craziest. Not in a good way though. Super stressful.  The best ones were the mad dashes. I don’t know who knows about or remembers those now. Geoff Dermer, Sean Sayles and maybe Kelly Bergman were the brains behind those.  I think Jon Engle might have helped with the later ones. It was a bunch of guys from Vancouver that would tour the western half of Canada and do demos for no apparent reason. They were the shi*t. There was little to no budget and we’d just go stay on shop-owner’s floors most if not all the time.   It wasn’t a corporate style trip. Just skating for the hell of it. The people who owned the shops were so rad. They were the best hosts. They’d have house parties for us and show us the best time we’d ever had.   Glenn Suggitt threw down when we stayed there. Best dude ever. I think it was guy at ruins in Prince George, he threw an awesome party. I can’t remember the lady’s name in red deer but she ruled.

VW - an Am and pro that gets you pumped?

TDG - Jack Lalane gets me pumped. Emeril too.

VW - Well thanks Ted for doing this for me and the skate scene of the world. Any last words and shout outs?

TDG - No problem. Thanks as well.
