Pro And Am Q&A: Sunday, September 16, 2007

Q&A With Greg Brewer
with Vaughn Whynot

Greg Brewer….where the hell have you been. Last time I saw you, you where throwing down kick melons on the 2way in Lunenburg at my comp... Well let’s do this Q&A so I can find out what you have been up too.

VW - State your name, Age, hometown, sponsors, if you’re pro or am?

GB - I'm Greg Brewer I'm 21 years old and my sponsors are Real Skateboards, Spitfire Wheels, Thunder Trucks, and Vans Shoes.

VW - So Mr. Brewer, how are your new sponsors treating you…and do you miss the east coast…are we east coast…I didn’t do well in geo?

GB - ha-ha oh yes its East alright.  The sponsors are pretty kick-ass right now.  They've all been super nice.  I just got back from a trip to the states with Vans for an article in Concrete so I'm pretty hyped on that.

VW - Skateboard Set-up right now?

GB - Deck- Real 8 and 1/4.  52 mm Spitfire Wheels. Reds Bearings, 147 Thunders Trucks.

VW - Your Part In “Homegrown Slightly lit Video”, which was your fav places to skate in your part and out of everyone else in that video…who did you get more pumped off of?

GB - That’s a tough one.  Montreal and Toronto are both awesome cities but I think Toronto was pretty fun.  I was super pumped off all the guys we were there with.  I'd never really met any of the boys until then so it was really fun to get to meet them for a trip like that.  Everyone was awesome on that trip for sure.

VW - Skate Video You Can’t wait to see?

GB - The Fallen Video, Lakai if it ever comes out.  A new flip video would be rad too but I don't know if they're even doing one right now.

VW - What 1 trick your love doing these days and well hate even trying?

GB - Hardflips.

VW - Non-Skateboard Sponsor You Wish You Had?

GB - Alexander Keith’s or Wendy's.

VW - One thing to tell kids about skateboarding…and reason why you’re still doing it?

GB - Just have fun doing it mainly.  It's the best way to mellow out and meet new people.  If you’re having a good time that’s all that matters and people will see that.

VW - This is one question I had to ask because it’s always on my mind…what are your views on this helmet law in Canada

GB - shi*tTY!!!  If I hit my head it's my own fault.  Someone could slip on ice or trip off a curb and hit there head but you don't need helmets to walk on an icy sidewalk.  I hope.

VW - One trick you wish you had on lock down?

GB - Switch three flips.

VW - Craziest road trip/demo/skate sesh?

GB - The Homegrown one was fun and the Vans one I just got back from.  But when a bunch of us from Fredericton and Moncton went to Calgary and ended up getting to skate in Slam City Jam.  That was pretty much the funniest thing ever!

VW - Am and Pro you’re pumped of?

GB - Appleyard, Reynolds, Rowley.

VW - Last scrape you were in?

GB - I try to stay out of trouble, but I almost went in the police patty wagon the other day for trying to throw a giant road barrier over a fence ha-ha.  As soon as I herd the brakes of the truck the officer had my face up against the side of the truck and my arm wrenched around my back ha-ha.  Luckily some randoms saved me and told the cop that a car had just ran into the barrier and they saw me fixing it.  He told them that they could fit in the truck too and better leave now.  So they walked away.  I ended up talking my way out of it because I had New Brunswick ID and I was “Just visiting for 3 days."  Then he was cool with it.  He actually said this stupid line that sounded like some sort of slogan ha-ha.  “You enjoy Vancouver.  You do not destroy it!"

VW - Song you’re real into these days.

GB - I dunno I like to keep a good mix of everything.

VW - So G-brew when you coming down to Lunenburg way. We need some beer and you need to destroy the Lbc Park, while I am drunk and watch…hope to hear form you soon...and maybe see you skate.

GB - Hopefully I'll be in New Brunswick around Christmas time.  Maybe next summer I'll make a trip again and get to check the new Halifax Park out and come down to Lunenburg and see all the boys.

Lata.  Peace!

RDS TEAM UPDATE - RYAN OUGHTON

Ryan Oughton was anxious to skate after spending a little too long indoors due to the winter weather in Calgary so when his friend Devin Morrison suggested they attend Tiki Room's Welcome to Winter contest they hit the road to Regina.  Instead of doing the speed limit of 110 he drove a little faster and got pulled over for doing 190 and was immediately arrested for dangerous driving. The officer quickly realized that Ryan's US registration on his car wasn't legit and also had his car towed.  After throwing Ryan and Devin into the back of his car, processing the two criminals and handing out a huge fine to Ryan, the cop ended up dropping Ryan and Devin off at a local highway diner minus the car.  Seven hours later Ryan's other friend Brenden rescued the two stranded would be competitors from the diner in the middle of nowhere and gave them a ride to the hotel.  After two hours of sleep and a couple Kokanee's for breakfast Ryan pulls of a clean run and won the contest. Here's a financial breakdown of Ryan's contest weekend:

EXPENSES:
DANGEROUS DRIVING TICKET $700

HOTEL $60
KOKANEE'S $5

INCOME:

So it's been a while since i have wrote anything but i have lots to say.  First of all i have to say that I met every single member of the Pussycat Dolls and had a full conversation with each one for 5 to 10 minutes. If you don't know i work the overnight shift at a hotel in Calgary.  They were here last Thursday night for a consert.  I had the good fortune of having to get there bags from all there rooms. They all had seperet rooms so I would go to each room to get there bags and start talk about shi*t.  I asked one if she liked the reality show that they did, she hung her head and looked away. That tells you what they think of the show.  I asked anouther doll  if her 100 pound bag had her make up and her other faces in the bag (f*cken bag almost crippled me). Now they look smoken hot on TV, but in person a couple look jacked up. I think a few live in Silicone Valley.  Man make up does a lot for a gal.  Now they were gettin on a bus and going to Saskatoon for a show there. Half of them looked like they were dress for the bar the others were dressed to sleep on a bus .  Got to say that they all were dope and not all Hollywood bitch queens but there abs were so nice you could eat jello off of them and they tip pritty good.
That is one of my better nights i have had, others nights i get to kick vagrents out of the hotel for trying to sleep in bathrooms or under stairs, so much f*cken fun.

To end this, I can't think of one Pussycat Doll song but if I ever get the chance I will Tag them all.

My Blog: Songg

Love of mine some day you will die
But I'll be close behind
I'll follow you into the dark

No blinding light or tunnels to gates of white
Just our hands clasped so tight
Waiting for the hint of a spark
If Heaven and Hell decide
That they both are satisfied
Illuminate the NOs on their vacancy signs

If there's no one beside you
When your soul embarks
Then I'll follow you into the dark

In Catholic school as vicious as Roman rule
I got my knuckles bruised by a lady in black
And I held my tongue as she told me
"Son fear is the heart of love"
So I never went back

If Heaven and Hell decide
That they both are satisfied
Illuminate the NOs on their vacancy signs

If there's no one beside you
When your soul embarks
Then I'll follow you into the dark

You and me have seen everything to see
From Bangkok to Calgary
And the soles of your shoes are all worn down
The time for sleep is now
It's nothing to cry about
Cause we'll hold each other soon
The blackest of rooms

If Heaven and Hell decide
That they both are satisfied
Illuminate the NOs on their vacancy signs

If there's no one beside you
When your soul embarks
Then I'll follow you into the dark
Then I'll follow you into the dark
-Death Cab

My Blog: Bangerang!!
By: JennyG

Well well, i havent written one of these since summer! Its December already? Geez time gets away fast! Tons of shi*t has happened in my life since my last blog. So yea my summer was jammed packed with two jobs (serving and skating) But i managed to go to Penticton, BC for a week with a few friends.....good times for sure (we met random people), the skatepark was the funnest thing ever! After that I volunteered at slam city jam for a whole weekend and it was soo rad! I ended up actually skating the set up, including the vert ramp as well....It was Huge! I got to see Swollen Members up close (got to shake their hands oh yea!) I think im defintely gonna do that next year.

So this was my first year back at school since high school. Im going to Mount Royal College in Calgary and im taking a 4 year applied degree called Eco Tourism and Outdoor Leadership. It is seriously the best program anyone ever invented! The first day of school we had to climb this wall using only eachother to get up and over it. I was wearing a skirt that day, haha good times (i still did it of course). Anyways the people in the program are just as amazing, we are all tight!! Rock climbing, mountaineering, kayaing and canoeing are mandatory classes you have to take. We did some sick trips in the mountains, ive never been on such steep ridgelines in my life! I also had to get over my fear of being in caves, i would rather go rock climbing....which is ten times more dangerous. HAH! Next semester i have to take a wilderness survival course, should be interesting, cause i can only bring 3 items, and your not allowed to bring a sleeping bag or tent, not to mention that this is going to be in the middle of winter! So what would you bring??

UMM so other than i was in a relationship for 2 months, with a guy named AJ who is a rad skater......we are still friends.....I turned 20 in October (man i feel old, that was my last summer as a teen!)Got my nose pierced - didnt hurt at all. Im working at Canada Olympic Park im a snowboard instructor, my first shift is next week! Ive gotten out snowboarding a couple of times in the mountains, got pretty sore, it was sweet! I hope to get much more pow pow days in......

I went to the Killswitch Engage concert this week, and it was SOO good, they rock, you should check em out! (If you are hardcore that is)

Future news: Im going to be driving a car soon yay(well boo for polluting the enviroment and not using my bicycle) Also im going to Red Rocks, Nevada in February to do some rock climbing with people from my class! Im stoked!!

Well enjoy the snow! I know i am!

Catchya on the flip side

Ciao!

Skate Spot (published monthly in the Nerve Magazine) (thenervemagazine.com)

Shreditorial: Fall Out

Protest the Hippie

The motley skate crue at Protest Skateboards are premiering their new video “Never Give Up” on Friday November 17 at 9:30 pm at Coastal Riders in Surrey BC ( 10310 152nd Street, off Hwy #1). There’ll be a Vancouver premiere as well, location TBA, check calstreets.com for updates. Like a modern-day A-Team run by Murdock, Protest is the brainchild of friendly sasquatch Hippie Mike Faux. Catch the stylish stylishness of Jeff Cole, charisma of Jon “J. Lee” Irvine, mathematical precision of Cisco Gooding, feminine wiles of Carrie Williams and the mystery of Brad Danyluk. Highlights include a great many tricks featuring skateboards, plus Hippie busting out his custom 2x4 deck for some kickflip roof gaps and a 10-stair early grab. Video runs a half hour and comes with a bonus tour DVD. Buy it and protest everything.

Share the Rad

Jeff Cole organized Douglas Park Community Centre’s “Share the Wealth” Skate Jam and Protest demo for all the groms. All Nerve readers must buy something from each sponsor tomorrow: Protest, RVCA, Momentum, Boardroom, Vestal, Pacific Boarder, Thriller, and especially Downspace. Otherwise you’ll have bad luck for seven years.

VanCity Downtown Plaza

Underworld hosted the End of Summer Skate Jam to end summer with a bang, hand out prizes and commiserate over the start of rainy season. As usual, Underworld put on a good event to support the skate community. The comp went down at Van’s Downtown Plaza, which is currently only a temporary park. The Vancouver Skatepark Coalition is lobbying the City to make this park permanent, but needs help from skaters. To make this a reality, there has to be less garbage at the site, as far as the City ‘s concerned. It’s something to keep in mind – since we all need more parks and spots, not less. So remember to throw out your crap so we can all enjoy the plaza for a long time to come.

Almost Secret

If you bought the Almost “Cheese and Crackers” DVD, you’re in luck. Jay at Westbeach tells us there are 2 hidden bonuses. Go to the Main Menu, to the upper left icon and press left left up. Alternately, go to the lower right icon and press right right down. You may be rewarded with big wood and some fat blunts. It’s like Super Mario. If it doesn’t work, blame Jay.

This and That

"Thatmagazine", which has been floating around in small format for about 3 years, has grown – into a full-sized skateshop, that is. Drop by 12 E.Cordova St in Gastown, Vancouver and check out various local brands such as Vancity Skateboards, Lowsea Loc Skimboards, Thatmagazine, Powdered Donut Bearings, and Strike Three Clothing . The opening is set for November 1st, Release party coming up too. If you’re cold and lonely, Dan Cummer’s got new Maniac shirts and hoodies and Jay Pay ‘s on Co-Op radio 102.7fm.

Calgary

If you’re in Calgary you might check out the Group Seven shop’s hardwood miniramp. They’re at 2115 4th Street or call ‘em at 403.229.3117. We forgot to mention last month that D-Rock won Slam City, specifically the high score on Ms. Pac-Man, and won a shirt from a little company called Big Swell who you should support cuz they’re nice.

Rainful Wet Tour

Daewon, Marc Johnson, McCrank, Danny Garcia, Brandon Biebel, Jeron Wilson, Mike Taylor, and Van Wastell were in town on the Matix Grateful Shred tour, for a demo at the Plaza, but were rained out. They still showed up for a signing at antisocial, along with a bunch of groms. Rain sucks.

Eastside

Zoo York's AM Getting Paid went down Sept. 22nd to 24th 2006 at South Parc skatepark in Montreal . In it’s third year, the event’s a 3-day Am comp put on by Zoo York and Underworld skate shop. Dan Cordeiro and Dan Vezina were behind the street course design (Vez was the brains behind the Tazmahal park in Montreal in the 90s). Check the site for more details: www.south-parc.com. Also coming up is the premierefor Underworld’s latest video, check dates across Canada at: http://yesterdaysfuturevideo.com

Now that monsoon season is about to hit, it’s good to do a little research on your local indoor skatespots. This month we want to mention Adrift Skateshop in Toronto, run by ex-VanCity’s very own Lyndsey Westfall. The shop is at 751 Queen St. West, and is home to some small skate obstacles, lots of fun consumer items and a lot of heart. http://adriftskateshop.com or http://myspace.com/adriftskateshop

Error!

A.N.T.I.S.L.A.M’s Last Man Standing was actually won by John Baker who beat Seb in a confusing overtime scenario.

Leeside

Sept 24th was the hiphop, breakin’ and skatin’ show at Leeside to raise awareness and fundraise to make the tunnel an official skate, bmx and graf site. Performers included Curtis Clearsky, Rapsure Risin, 49th Peril, Brigee K, In:Stead, Su Commandante, Buzy B and Rupinder Singh. Thanks to antisocial for covering insurance costs, and everyone who came out.   Check http://leeside.ca/ or http://leematasi.spekt.net/ to donate to the park, which is in memory of Lee Matasi, the skateboarder and artist who was shot last year. On another note, Momentum Wheels has released a memorial wheel for Lee: the 'I Heart Lee Matasi' 53mm Momentum Wheel. 100% of the proceeds go to Leeside and it’s available at antisocialshop.com and darkflavour.com. Speaking of dark flavour, Matt Smed came up with Leeside Blend coffee and wants you to know all the profits go to the Leeside project. Now you can push, roll, sweat and piss Leeside - that’s what Lee used to do.

Skatespot: From Van to Slam and back Again

Calgary Slams

The circus rolled into Calgary last weekend. Slam, which moved from Vancouver to Cowtown, this year, hasn't weathered the move too well. Under new ownership  for the past 2 years, it's become more like a Rightguard ad and less like the homegrown contest that grew into a world-class event. Part of the of the problem is that it's no longer being managed by people who actually skate and have experience in the industry. Just the same it's always fun to see what unique course New LIne will come up with, and see your favourite locals skate with international pros. Last year's course was granite-enriched and pure-street-ish, this year more artifice with a mini-golf/cartoon flava - Peanuts doghouse, iced out gold-chain rail and an arcing Spiderman rail, plus a rolling My Humps ledge just for fun. Tech maestro Micky Pappa beat out Will Christafaro and some older and taller competition to win the Es Game of Skate. The comp overall was pretty fun, but not as many pros as in past years. Contest Results: 1. Greg Lutzka,  2. Chad Bartie, Australia;  VanCity's Ryan DeCenzo, Magnus Hanson and Nathan LaCoste, placed 3rd, 4th and 5th, 6th was Calgary's Ryan Oughton, 7. Dayne Brummet, 8. Sascha Daley, 9. Tony Trujillo, 10. Danny Fuenzalida; other good runs for Canucks were: 11. Scott DeCenzo, 12. Sheldon Meleshinski, 15. Chris Haslam, 16. Eric Mercier,  17. Jesse Langden, 19.Josh Evin (who also placed 10th in vert),  20.Greg Brewer,  21. Trevor Houlihan, 22. Josh Clark,  23. Micky Pappa and 25. Geoff Dermer, Vancouver. Men's Vert: 1. Rob Lorifice, 2. Sandro Dias, 3. Neal Hendrix. Girls' Street: 1. Lacey Baker,  2. Vanessa Torres,  3. Lauren Perkins. Canadian Kristen Zurwick came in 7th. Girls' Vert: 1. Karen Jones, 2. Holly Lyons, 3. Vanessa Torres  4. Amy Caron and Vancouver's Alison "Nugget" Matasi placed 5th.

East Infection

Spectrum's Prez Jim Barnum joined "East Coast Skate Militia" Richard Sarrazin, Steve Lange and Brent Jordan in skatepark and spot entrenched North Carolina's Outer Banks. Am Getting Paid goes down Sept. 23, 24 amd 25 at South-Parc skatepark in Montreal - check south-parc.com for more details. Bad news from Montreal - the Big O Pipe is in jeopardy. A soccer stadium is is plaaned for that site, which could mean the end of the Pipe's existence. Montreal skaters are organizing to try to save the classic spot: go to their website and sign their guest book to help Save the Big O pipe.

Back in the Van

The Underworld sponsored Fraser Heights Comp went down Aug 19. First place went to Ryan Decenzo, 2nd Dustin, Montie, 3rd Magnus Hanson. The Vancouver Skatepark Coalition voted in thier new Board. Congrats to Michelle Pezel (Prez), Jeff Chan (VP), Char Hunter (Treasurer) and Lee Ann Slade (Secretary). A main priority is getting Leeside built - soon and right. Check vspc.ca and antisocialshop.com for upcoming meetings. Summer End Skate Jam, put on by Underworld Skateshop is Sept. 3rd at the Downtown Plaza, with lots of cash prizes for best tricks. After party at Lucy Mae Browns. Coming up, the official opening of Quilchena Park is Sept. 9, with demos planned. Hope they fix the bad coping job before it goes down. Plus Matix and Supra's Greatful Shred Tour, with your shredologists: Marc Johnson, Daewon, McCrank, Biebel, Danny Garcia, Mikey Taylor, as well as Travis Stenger and Mike McDermott. Signing at Antisocial at 3pm Sept. 20, and The Source Skate Shop, Calgary, Sept. 24, 3 pm.Demo in Van at the Plaza (Georgia Viaduct) and Calgary at the Millenium Park; both demos at 5 pm.

Skatespot World Tour - Survivors’ Account

This summer, Skatespot mediasupernova toured all 4 major international cities, starting with Winnipeg - now international centre number one. Is too, you bullies, judging by its new Plaza at the Forks, maybe the best streetpark yet. A well-composed architectural landscape, it’s big, (stairs, rails, banks, granite ledges) and distinguished by details - 2 sculptures, one a fish-like steel cantilever next to a China Banks replica, one a steel/concrete ribbon we call “My Humps”, plus local skate-art displays. New Line creatively multiplied the banked-ledge-next-to-stair element from Vancouver’s plaza; the pool-like bowls include oververt clamshell and cradle. Thanks RJ/Kyle of New Line, to Mr. Burns’ (true fact) donation of $2 million (Excellent, Smithers) and to Sk8Skates for design input. Opening week saw Koston, Appleyard, Keegan Sauder, Geoff Dermer, Kris Foley and Jim Barnum show and shred. Not bad, prairie town.

Ah, Montreal, home of le street shred. This summer South Parc hosts hella comps – check south-parc.com. Don’t miss the hallowed Big-O fullpipe next to ’67 StadeOlympique. (photos at parfond.com).  Big-O rulers Marc Tison and Barry Walsh are writing a book - “Pipe Fiends” – send Big-O photos/stories to  HYPERLINK "mailto:marc.tison@gmail.com" marc.tison@gmail.com. Known for gnarly streetskating, Toronto also harbours Gymbo’s inner city indoor skatepark Shred Central. (check  HYPERLINK "http://www.shredcentral.com" shredcentral.com) Manzanita, Oregon - We surfed, but the Skatallica tour destroys Oregon’s bowls each summer – (grindline.com or dreamlandskateparks.com)

Finally, back in Van, Underworld hosted eS Game-of-Skate July 29, , Bowl Series wraps up (Whistler, Aug. long weekend), Leeside progresses (antisocialshop.com), and VSPC’s new Prez/Veep vote is Aug. 12 at antisocial.

Summer's almost over. Wow it was wild though.
Since May i've hit up Calgary, Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa, Edmonton and Grande Prairie.
If you ever get a chance, montreal is the most unreal place to skate. Good scene, good spots, bars with mini-ramps, crazy french kids who scream "TABARNAC!" when they don't land their shi*t. And a rediculously awesome female skateboarding scene. There's comps every week...sometimes every day..sometimes 2 in a day...demos...and you run into all sorts of people downtown..Orkus indoor and south parc indoor...skate bars that play vids while you drink the night away...restaurants that give you "the skater deal". Let's not forget Big-O. It's something else. Toronto's pretty gangster...really fun spots if you can outsmart the porks for a bit, gay festivals, the CBC manny pad. I only experienced it for 3 days so I don't know enough, but it was a blast. Ottawa was fun minus sleeping on the streets for 2 nights due to evil money hungry cell phone companies who steal your hotel money. Lots of talent out there, and you can skate spots for hours without getting kicked out, or at least we didn't get kicked out of any when we were out there. Lots of fun ledges, especially by the hobo bridge there's a gooder, but really fun spots everywhere nonetheless. Calgary locs keep it gangst. Edmonton has lots of emos. Grande Prairie has no spots, a shi*tty park if you're a beginner, but a good scene and super tight shops (dark flavour downtown and southside). But yeah fun aint over yet. Philippines in a month and then who knows. Long beach? Vancouver? Victoria? Kelowna? Probly keep it west for a change. anyways hope to see you all somewhere. peace
