The contest was awesome. I came in 5th place. It was a bowl competition, and I wasn't very good at riding in the bowl. Even though I wasn't that good, I came in 5th place! I couldn't even believe it. It was so awesome!

So last month I entered a local skate comp in Park City, and I totally took 1st place.  Cool huh?  I knew my practice would pay off one day!  It was my first and only comp so far... and I will have to admit... Competing makes me sick.  Like people who get sick when they speak in public, I got sick to my stomach each time I dropped in for my one minute run.  Dang.

Skateboarding, art and the web, Parker Newman from Popdeck.com talks about his recently launched skateboard design community.

For your chance to win one of Popdeck's limited boards sign up for a profile on SkateboardVillage and send friend request to Popdeck on SkateboardVillage. On April 23rd one of Popdecks friends will be randomly chosen to win a Popdeck board.

What is Popdeck all about?

Popdeck is essentially a skateboard design competition. Started out as a passion between our love for design/art and skateboarding. We have always collected cool decks as art after we skated them up, and this was just the natural progression.

So who is popdeck or involved with creating the idea?

My twin brother and myself start Popdeck. We were previously in the t-shirt business and have always had a passion for skateboarding. We're located in Chicago.

How does it work?

We have an ongoing contest for skateboard art and every 3 weeks we pick a winner, pay them a prize and print there board. The community has the obligation of choosing the winners by rating each design submitted out of 5. After a winner is chosen, we award them 200 dollars and a free deck.

Don't Break my beat Board design by: nunosk8

Where are the boards made?

Our boards are made in Pennsylvania by the good people of Penn Woods.

Where did you get the idea for the website?

We were pretty involved in the design community from our prior work, and just were so impressed by the different mediums people could use to create art. Being skateboarders since forever, it just seemed like a cool idea.

Do you think more people buying popdeck’s are skating their decks or do you think they are using them as art or to hang on their walls?

Right now we want to say that 90 percent of boards sold are by skateboarders. I think though over the past few years, we have really seen a push to people presenting skateboards as art and we hope to open up into that more. To be honest, you really can’t get a great piece of art for cheaper then 40 bucks. But, at the end of the day, it is a skateboard and most people are grinding them up.

What do you think is the relationship between Skateboarding and Art?

Skateboarding has always been a way for people to express themselves. Whether it is by mastering tricks or the entire graffiti and streetwear scene that goes with it. I think it is a dual serving relationship and we have seen a lot of artist come out that were skaters, these guys then become great artist and then give back to the skate community. A prime example of this to me is having these great grafitti artist that came out in the 90’s are now established gallery artists.

One prime example is Eric Elms, he was very into that whole scene in the 90’s. Started off as just a graf writer and now we have seen his amazing art on skate brands such as Supreme.

Why have you decided to produce and sell decks in only 20 units?

We started this as an idea to merge art and skating, but didn’t want this to be something that was completely exposed to the masses. We are a tight niche community and we really want people to know they are getting something unique and hand made. As we grow though we hope to raise quantities, but they will always be hand numbered

Squad Comic board design by: squad comic

$40 for a sweet original designed limited edition deck is a pretty sweet deal, How come you decided to make them so cheap?

It was basically for a few reasons, most importantly we didn’t want price to be a reason people couldn’t experience our brand or for people to be hesitant about ordering from us. Being a direct to consumer company as well, we wanted to take advantage of our margins and give it back to the consumer.

What are the plans for the future of Popdeck.com?

Right now we are just making our site and community better and better. We will constantly mold and improve the site. Also, expect a ton more special contest with great prizes and what not. We are also launching a gallery section, let people show off their pics and videos for prizes.

News,Events,Contest & Video Premieres: Skateboarders set to jam in Lunenburg
By: NovaScotiaSkaters

Skateboarders set to jam in Lunenburg

by Robert Hirtle
Veteran local skater Vaughn Whynot
has taken the lead in organizing Spring
Into Skate Jam, slated to take place at
the Lunenburg Skateboard Park April 6.

With spring just around the corner, it's time for skateboarding enthusiasts of all ages to dust off their boards and start getting the kinks out for the upcoming season.

One thing that is sure to help them brush off the rust is an event entitled Spring Into Skate Jam, slated for the Lunenburg Skateboard Park April 6 beginning at noon.

The event is being organized by veteran South Shore skating aficionado Vaughn Whynot, who says the idea is to stage a no-cost skating event that will allow adults and youth alike to come together, show off their boarding prowess "and just have a good time.

"What a skate jam is, compared to a skate competition, is that kids would [have] to pay to enter a contest," Mr. Whynot explains. "[But] a skate jam is groups of friends getting together … [to] just skate and have fun. What people started doing was saying hey, why can't we do that and give prizes out for the best skater in the group."

With that idea in mind, Mr. Whynot solicited several local businesses as well as the Lunenburg recreation department, which graciously donated prizes for the winning skaters.

Those will be awarded in a variety of competitions which will be staged for three different skill levels - peewee, intermediate and pro.

He is also looking for volunteers who might be willing to video and photograph the event as well as individuals "who can help out and just make sure everything is fine and going smoothly.

"We're kind of hoping some bands would donate their time to come and play a little bit. That would serve as advertising to them and bring a little bit of music for the kids. If we did have bands, it would put a lot more of a feel to the event," he says.

Mr. Whynot says that while skate jams have been held in Lunenburg before, this event will be different as it will be used as a kickoff for the summer skating season.

A similar event held in Lunenburg in 2007 attracted over 100 skaters, and he is anticipating that number to double as expressions of interest have come from as far away as Newfoundland for this year's jam.

"And I'm working on trying to get at least one or two pro skateboarders to come down just for the weekend to sign a couple of things and that sort of thing," he adds.

For more information on Spring Into Skate Jam, contact Vaughn Whynot at vaughnwhynot@eastlink.ca or call 530-5870.

i never knew how much a contry song can totally tell you a story

She stayed up all night and cried into her pillow
And fought off the urge to just break down and call
Last night to find the fault seemed so darn easy
But now whose to blame don't matter much at all
She thinks if she calls him it just shows weakness
So the hurt goes on with every tear she's cried
Ain't it sad to see a good love fall to pieces
Chalk another heartbreak up to foolish pride

Turn out the lights the competition's over
The stubborn souls are the losers here tonight
And while the bridges burn, another hard-hard lesson's learned
As through the ashes passion slowly dies
And this romance goes down to foolish pride

He relives every word they spoke in anger
He walks the floor and punches out the wall
To apologize to her would be so simple
But instead he cries I'll be damned if I'll crawl
If he loses her he's lost his best friend
And that's more then just a lover can provide
So he wrestles with emotions that defeat him
Chalk another love lost up to foolish pride

Turn out the lights the competition's over
The stubborn souls are the losers here tonight
And while the bridges burn, another hard-hard lesson's learned
As through the ashes passion slowly dies
And this romance goes down to foolish pride

Chalk another heartbreak up to foolish pride

Have you heard of Gromfest?  We’re a grassroots skate and snow competition that takes all of the proceeds from our event and donates them to non-profits that use board sports to benefit kids.  Gromfest happens at Whistler in the summer with the skate competitions happening at Squamish skate park and the snow competitions happening on Camp of Champions terrain up on Blackcomb’s glacier.  This comp is all about the love of the sports…our competitors are there because they love to ride and want to compete against kids from all over North America.

If you're interested in competing in Gromfest (whether on the skate or snow side of things) and you’re a part of Snowboard.com or SkateboardVillage.com, we’ve got the way to make it happen.  Just put together a little video full of footage of you killing it.  Upload your skate vids here and your snow vids here. If your tape has a mix of the two, then don’t worry, just upload to whichever one you like. Also include an explanation of why you want to be a part of Gromfest in the comments section of where you uploaded your video, cause dang it we're not only looking for the best riders, but also those who love the sports for all that they are.

Rules & Regulations:

         * Participants must be 18 or under
         * Videos should be no longer than 5 minutes
         * Gromfest will take place from July 16th-19th at Whistler, British Columbia
         * Participants must be able to get to Whistler on their own - flights and
            accommodations are not included
         * Lift tickets and free access to Camp of Champions terrain will be provided for
            snowboard competitors

We’ll pick multiple winners after the deadline so get those tapes in, you could be joining kids from all over North America to compete this summer.

Deadline: May 31st

So for various reasons, Gromfest is shrinking its size and scope for 2007 and just focusing on the competitions themselves.

Part of this is due to the fact that the East Coast had a horrible winter and we couldn't hold any comps there.  Part of this is due to time constraints that plagued us this season.  And part of this is due to the fact that we're a grassroots competition that is run by a small group of volunteers.

Does this mean that the comp is going to kick any less ass?  Of course not.  In fact, this little predicament we ran into this year, only benefits you!

Because we were not able to run all the qualifying comps we wanted to, we want to offer some of the competitor spots to YOU...the Skateboard Village members.

If you're interested in competing in Gromfest (whether on the skate or snow side of things), just put together a little video full of footage of you killing it.  Also include an explanation of why you want to be a part of the comp, cause dang it we're not only looking for the best riders, but also those who love the sports for all that they are.

Once that's done, put it in an envelope, slap it in the mail and send it to:

Deadline: May 31st

I am originaly from England, I first made a skateboard out of a peace of wood and half a roller skate, which I used on a incline near to a bus stop, the amount of times a bus went over it and I had to make a new one.
I moved to Grand Cayman in 1988 and since then I have joined the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service. My interest is making a difference in young peoples lives. To me thats what it is all about inspire them to keep out of trouble, it gives me less to do with them, however the job never stops.
In 2003 Mr. Mike Bell an Entrapreneur broke ground on a skatepark, nobody really knew how big it was going to be; was it going to be a bowl or a couple of humps to ride over (nobody knew). I use to go with my kids and the wife, Sean 3 years old then rode a big board on his knees, however he had no fear and rode down all the heavy ramps. His mother stopped going because she was scared to see what he was doing. Brian was 12 years old and he was learning the basics. Anyway the park continued to grow until one day that was it, it stood before us. If anybody comes to Black Pearl guranteed it takes your breath away. We have had Tony Hawke, Burnquist, Scheckler, Bam, Darin naveret, Sam Hitz, Pete Hewitt, Mark Appleyard, Steve Nesser, Dayone Song, Brian Patch, Patt Duffy, Jimmy The Greek, Steve Olson, and so many others including Mike Vaellely skate the park, THey are all impressed by what the park has, EVERYTHING>
During my time going to the park I did not realize what I had right in front of me; I am always trying to find ways to get through to kids. I once went to the boys home in Grand Cayman and I was having a difficult time getting through to them, so I mentioned skateboarding. They all suddenly changed from being nervouse to talking enthusiatic, I asked them if they would like a movie night they all agreed. The next week I took Sean and Brian and a pro skateboarder. the pro told them what he does for a living, where he is building a house (Brazil) and where in the world he has been. These kids were listening and we had there input also. We watched TWIGGS by Element and they were glued to their seats.
After the evening finished I asked them would thye like to visit Black Pearl, they all agreed. So the next Saturday we went and I had the kids at the park who skate help these non skaters, I was amazed to see them working together, I was satisfied when I saw the smile on their faces when they rode down a ramp with out falling. One kid was even trying fly outs and he had never been on a skateboard before.
The local Tv station and News Papers did a story on the event which to me was a great success.
After seeing the reaction of these kids I decided the best way to go on was to research building a ramp. I saved some money (a lot as things are expensive hear). And with the help of Mr. Philip Berry the mose respected skater at the park even the pro's show their respect as believe me he can skate street with the best. WE decided on a spott my back yard, Philip I must admit did most of the work as he knew exactly what he was doing. The ramp was completed and my kids skated it, I invited local kids round to the house and I gave boards to the ones who did not have their own. Some time after Lost Clothing came to the Island shooting a movie. I spoke to them showed them pictures of the ramp and it was set they would skate it. They came to the house and we had local kids there as well. At the time we had a trampoline and the kids (I Meen the pros) had a great time. Patt Duffy, Brian Patch, Jimmy The Greek and others showed off their moves, however the one who took the day was Juliana my daughter the skateboarding baby she was under 8 months old going up and down on the ramp. All this was on film later it was shown on Fuel TV, they even put me on the websight as the chief of police, I did say Sorry to the Boss.
The Cayman Compass did a big story which was good publicity for skateboarding.
Some time after Mike Vallely and Mark Jeremias came to Black Pearl to do a movie called DRIVE I spole to them and showed them picture of our ramp; which by the way has the best back drop THE CARIBBEAN OCEAN. And they both liked the idea of including the ramp, they also asked me if I could do an interview as they were intrigued to see a cop promoting skateboarding ( imagine a COP who skatebaords and supports it). ON the Saturday Mike V and Mark came to the house , he had a mini ramp session with the local kids and the skateboarding baby came out again and showed off her moves. The funny thing was Mark had to re do the shot so I put juliana on the board and she was going up and down and some body said something is wrong as her head went towards the board, she fell asleep and I caught her in my arms. Mike then Interviewed me in Full uniform on the ramp, it went pretty well, however it was really hot I got sunburn. The local media came to the house also and did there part to promote which was good.
Recently we had Addict skateboards doing some video footage for Havoc.com at the house. Packy who skates for addict, an amateur called Aryeh Kraus who works for a skate shop in Cali and Keith Johnson ( Aryeh did a DVD called RIGHT STATE OF MIND) if you can get that dvd you will be stoaked it is fantastic skateboard footage, I have never seen a manual that keeps going like the Energizer Bunny.
They came around and did there stuff. A couple of weeks ago I got a copy of DRIVE FIELD OF DREAMS from Mark and I made copies and shared it with Department of Tourism who told the UK office they got in touch with me and asked me to do a BIO and story about skateboarding. Local News Papers did a story, radio Cayman interviewed me. CITN local TV did a story and showed 45 seconds of Field Of Dreams, they bigged up MIke V, Mark, and FUEL TV.
A law enforcement association in the US have asked me to do a presentation on what I do with skateboarding. Concrete Wave also asked me to do a story Skateboarding From the point of view of a COP>
Field of Dreams came out on 8th April 2007 and has been shown regularly on Fuel TV. The show will aire also in May 2007 so if you have not seen it check it out.
Cayman Compass came to the house and did another story which was in the news paper on Tuesday April 17th 2007 it featured me the kids and also one of our friends who visits us with his parents from Colorado Alex Brunelle who skates the competition circuit in the US he is 14 years old and he is very good at skating.

So we have action in the Cayman Islands.
I am sharing this with you all as I do have a message to share. It does not matter how old you are, what colour you are , where your from, what sex you are, if you are religouse or not, the colours you wear. Skateboarding crosses boarders. Any kid who picks up a skateboard is a winner as they are following pioneers, people who sacrificed, Blood, Sweat, Broken Bones, to make the sport what it is today, nearly every TV programe has skateboarding in it so it is now main stream and getting bigger.I feel Bob Burnquist has paved the way for the Olympics as he carried the Olympic Torch on a skateboard through the streets of RIO.
I am doing my part to make a difference, do the same in your community.
I live on an Island 27 miles long and 8 miles wide I am making change in more ways than one, which is being heard around the world. Cayman is not even on some maps and yet the voice of one who has a dream is being heard. If you have seen Drive, Field of Dreams you have heard my passion, I intend to share this with others so they are inspired to do the same.It Takes ONE TO CHANGE.
Remember one thing Like the late BOB Marley said in song "ONE BLOOD" that is what we are so if you are one who does "HATE" STOP THE HATE!!! SKATE FOR LIFE !!! SKATE FOR CHANGE>

my grades in school right now suck but my dad understands cuz its an advanced school. i'm currently very very busy. i dont think poetry is my forte anymore they all sound emo which i'm not. But my writing is taking off yay i just need to finish my novel and send it to an editor then cross your fingers it might be published.

Right now i am currently still helping my father design his tatoos and i am planning to be a tatoo artist sometime in the future.

What truly matters in life? grades school a job a career money, all worthless . day to day working our fingers to the bones for what? yeah i'm somewhat smart but school seems so pointless at times. i dont want to be trapped in life by doing something i cant stand. in the end its the memories that matter memories of friends family happy times. in the end i wont care if i got an a on the stupid test or not i'm going to care about what i did in life. i'm going to care if i helped find the cure for some fatal disease. can the world please wake up inside and see money isn't the answer, money isnt happiness. money is corruption and greed.  i feel like a rambling fool lost in this caotic society. if i work hard on the things i dont like then i get less sleep get somewhat better grades and then things go wrong. i dont have bad luck just random things happen at random times. in the end what is best for the soul and happyness is much more important than what was better for school or a job. if i ever work in a real office i swear my clothes will never match! yes i do design clothes and see how aweful that could be but it would be so much fun not to care. right now i cant sleep and i have a stupid standerd required test tomarrow, thank you texas shove more pass the test or stay back a grade bs down my throat. he he i'm wearing pajamas tomarrow with big homer simpson slippers. and maybe even dorky pigtails, my hair is flaming orange so i'll add in some blotches and streaks of red and black just to distract the other kids from their tests.
