Skateboarding, art and the web, Parker Newman from Popdeck.com talks about his recently launched skateboard design community.

For your chance to win one of Popdeck's limited boards sign up for a profile on SkateboardVillage and send friend request to Popdeck on SkateboardVillage. On April 23rd one of Popdecks friends will be randomly chosen to win a Popdeck board.

What is Popdeck all about?

Popdeck is essentially a skateboard design competition. Started out as a passion between our love for design/art and skateboarding. We have always collected cool decks as art after we skated them up, and this was just the natural progression.

So who is popdeck or involved with creating the idea?

My twin brother and myself start Popdeck. We were previously in the t-shirt business and have always had a passion for skateboarding. We're located in Chicago.

How does it work?

We have an ongoing contest for skateboard art and every 3 weeks we pick a winner, pay them a prize and print there board. The community has the obligation of choosing the winners by rating each design submitted out of 5. After a winner is chosen, we award them 200 dollars and a free deck.

Don't Break my beat Board design by: nunosk8

Where are the boards made?

Our boards are made in Pennsylvania by the good people of Penn Woods.

Where did you get the idea for the website?

We were pretty involved in the design community from our prior work, and just were so impressed by the different mediums people could use to create art. Being skateboarders since forever, it just seemed like a cool idea.

Do you think more people buying popdeck’s are skating their decks or do you think they are using them as art or to hang on their walls?

Right now we want to say that 90 percent of boards sold are by skateboarders. I think though over the past few years, we have really seen a push to people presenting skateboards as art and we hope to open up into that more. To be honest, you really can’t get a great piece of art for cheaper then 40 bucks. But, at the end of the day, it is a skateboard and most people are grinding them up.

What do you think is the relationship between Skateboarding and Art?

Skateboarding has always been a way for people to express themselves. Whether it is by mastering tricks or the entire graffiti and streetwear scene that goes with it. I think it is a dual serving relationship and we have seen a lot of artist come out that were skaters, these guys then become great artist and then give back to the skate community. A prime example of this to me is having these great grafitti artist that came out in the 90’s are now established gallery artists.

One prime example is Eric Elms, he was very into that whole scene in the 90’s. Started off as just a graf writer and now we have seen his amazing art on skate brands such as Supreme.

Why have you decided to produce and sell decks in only 20 units?

We started this as an idea to merge art and skating, but didn’t want this to be something that was completely exposed to the masses. We are a tight niche community and we really want people to know they are getting something unique and hand made. As we grow though we hope to raise quantities, but they will always be hand numbered

Squad Comic board design by: squad comic

$40 for a sweet original designed limited edition deck is a pretty sweet deal, How come you decided to make them so cheap?

It was basically for a few reasons, most importantly we didn’t want price to be a reason people couldn’t experience our brand or for people to be hesitant about ordering from us. Being a direct to consumer company as well, we wanted to take advantage of our margins and give it back to the consumer.

What are the plans for the future of Popdeck.com?

Right now we are just making our site and community better and better. We will constantly mold and improve the site. Also, expect a ton more special contest with great prizes and what not. We are also launching a gallery section, let people show off their pics and videos for prizes.

 Interview with Ruben Najera
Questions and lifestyle photo by “Scoffman
Action shot by Sheyla V.

So before we get started are there any shout-outs you want to give? Definitely!!! All of my sponsors!! Jason at SCOFF skateboarding hell yea indestructible laces man!!!Mike G. at ) nice skate shoes, STRUGGLE skateboards, Lisa at Destructo & Speed Metal, Jason at Gripgum, Eric at OGIO, John at Thiesnuts hardware, Lisa at Peter Grimm, Dylan at olliepop, Scotty at Taildevil and  Isaac at Cali Boardwear. I would also like to thank my beautiful lady Sheyla in which I adore and love. She supports me 100%. And my family of course no doubt!!!

So how did you come about to be on the Scoff team? Well I think it was an email I received from you back in the day. I believe I am one of the original riders. The concept was so rad and I had never seen anything like it. You truly have to get a pair of laces to see what I mean. It takes forever to tear through. It’s as if there’s some magic powers embodied within the laces.

How long have you been skateboarding for? About 7 years give or take.

What first got you into it?My cousin JC and some dude in high school that I used to watch skate.

Who did you look up to when you were first getting started?

Some local skateboarder they called “Q” that dude was so tech and was ollieing like 7 boards back in the day it was amazing to watch when I was younger.

What kinds of trouble do you and your buddies get into while skating? Have you ever been arrested before? Aww man hell yea. The Struggle guys and I have been through a lot. We are always running from the cops. Also way back in the day I remember getting tackled by an officer because we were running from him in a spot. Guess the guy thought we stole something. They ended up taking me and three other guys to jail; we sat in there the whole day until my friends mom bailed us out. They put us in one of those rooms where you can’t see through the mirror but they can see you, it was a trip. They put us in handcuffs and everything, threw us in the cop car.

What’s your favorite skatespot? Aww man, the black box park is buttery, I like skating downtown and the manual pads at Torrey pines. I still haven’t found a spot that I truly love though or I could consider my favorite because I really am into skating new stuff all the time. I get tired of spots fast I guess.

What is it that you love most about skateboarding? The feeling you get cruising the streets. And how it takes your mind off of everything else shi*tty going on in the world.

You told me before that your sort skipping from place to place right now and living out of your car sometimes. How’s that going for you, found a permanent place to stay yet? Yea actually I am back in my hometown right now been here for a little while now about a week or two id say. Things were hectic the last 4 months of my life though. Pretty much you could say I lived out of my car and at fast food for 120 days. Or cup of noodle if I got lucky and found a microwave. It was harsh I also got in two huge car wrecks during all this man I went through so much crap. My car caught on fire and I had to jump out the window when I was involved in an insane car wreck while driving on the 5 coming from . I had no car after that and resorted to public transportation in order to get to and from my job. Which meant major couch crashing and an even unhealthier diet? But you know what I learned more and got a real taste of the street life through those tough times man. And I had my skateboard the whole way through.

If you’d never pick up a skateboard, what would you be doing today? Dude I would be up to no good. Maybe I wouldn’t even be alive. I thank god for skateboarding. Because of skateboarding I kept my head straight, I even met my girlfriend through it. Through all my hard times it kept me alright. It kept me sane in an insane world. I can thank it for so much good in my life. It has taken me a lot of places and I never want to put it down. Skate for life man. SKATE FOR LIFE.

And everyone should get along..
Okay children quiet down, quiet down
Children I'd like to introduce our new substitute teacher for the day
His name is Mr. Shady
Children quiet down please
Brian don't throw that (SHUT UP!)
Mr. Shady will be your new substitute
while Mr. Kaniff is out with pneumonia (HE'S GOT AIDS!)
Good luck Mr. Shady

[Eminem]
Hi there little boys and girls (f*ck YOU!)
Today we're gonna to learn how to poison squirrels
But first, I'd like you to meet my friend Bob (Huh?)
Say hi Bob! ("Hi Bob") Bob's 30 and still lives with his mom
and he don't got a job, cause Bob sits at home and smokes pot
but his twelve-year old brother looks up to him an awful lot
And Bob likes to hang out at the local waffle spot
and wait in the parkin lot for waitresses off the clock
when it's late and the lot gets dark and fake like he walks his dog
Drag 'em in the woods and go straight to the chopping blocks (AHH!)
And even if they escaped and they got the cops
the ladies would all be so afraid, they would drop the charge
'til one night Mrs. Stacey went off the job
when she felt someone grab her whole face and said not to talk
But Stacey knew it was Bob and said knock it off
But Bob wouldn't knock it off cause he's crazy and off his rocker
Crazier than Slim Shady is off the vodka
You couldn't even take him to Dre's to get Bob a "Dr."
He grabbed Stace' by the legs as chopped it off her
and dropped her off in the lake for the cops to find her
But ever since the day Stacey went off to wander
they never found her, and Bob still hangs at the waffle diner
And that's the story of Bob and his marijuana,
and what it might do to you
So see if the squirrels want any - it's bad for you

Chorus: Mr. Mackey (Eminem)

See children, drugs are bahhhd (c'mon)
and if you don't believe me, ask ya dahhhd (ask him man)
and if you don't believe him, ask ya mom (that's right)
She'll tell you how she does 'em all the time (she will)
So kids say no to drugs (that's right)
So you don't act like everyone else does (uh-huh)
Then there's really nothin else to say (sing along)
Drugs are just bad, mmm'kay?

[Eminem]
My penis is the size of a peanut, have you seen it?
f*ck NO you ain't seen it, it's the size of a peanut (Huh?)
Speakin of peanuts, you know what else is bad for squirrels?
Ecstasy is the worst drug in the world
If someone ever offers it to you, don't do it
Kids two hits'll probably drain all your spinal fluid
and spinal fluid is final, you won't get it back
So don't get attached, it'll attack every bone in your back
Meet Zach, twenty-one years old
After hangin out with some friends at a frat party, he gets bold
and decides to try five, when he's bribed by five guys
and peer pressure will win every time you try to fight it
Suddenly, he starts to convulse and his pulse goes into hyperdrive
and his eyes roll back in his skull {*blblblblblb*
His back starts tah - look like the McDonald's Arches
He's on Donald's carpet, layin horizontal barfin {*BLEH*
And everyone in the apartment starts laughin at him
"Hey Adam, Zach is a jackass, look at him!"
cause they took it too, so they think it's funny
So they're laughing at basically nothing except maybe wasting his money
Meanwhile, Zach's in a coma, the action is over
and his back and his shoulders hunched up like he's practicin yoga
And that's the story of Zach, the ecstasy maniac
So don't even feed that to squirrels class, cause it's bad for you

Chorus: Mr. Mackey (Eminem)

See children, drugs are bahhhd (that's right)
and if you don't believe me, ask ya dahhhd (that's right)
and if you don't believe him, ask ya mom (you can)
She'll tell you how she does 'em all the time (she will)
So kids say no to drugs (smoke crack)
So you don't act like everyone else does (that's right)
And there's really nothin else to say (but umm)
Drugs are just bad, mmm'kay?

[Eminem]
And last but not least, one of the most humungous
problems among young people today, is fungus
It grows from cow manure, they pick it out, wipe it off,
bag it up, and you put it right in your mouth and chew it
Yum yum! Then you start to see some dumb stuff
And everything slows down when you eat some of 'em..
And sometimes you see things that aren't there (Like what?)
Like fat woman in G-strings with orange hair
(Mr. Shady what's a G-string?) It's yarn Claire
Women stick 'em up their behinds, go out and wear 'em (Huh?)
And if you swallow too much of the magic mushrooms
Whoops, did I say magic mushrooms? I meant fungus
Ya tongue gets, all swoll up like a cow's tongue (How come?)
cause it comes from a cow's dung (Gross!!)
See drugs are bad, it's a common fact
But your mom and dad, know that's all that I'm good at (Oh!)
But don't be me, cause if you grow up and you go and O.D.
They're gonna come for me and I'ma have to grow a goatee
and get a disguise and hide, cause it'll be my fault
So don't do drugs, and do exactly as I don't,
cause I'm bad for you

Chorus: Mr. Mackey (Eminem)

See children, drugs are bahhhd (uh-huh)
and if you don't believe me, ask ya dahhhd (put that down)
and if you don't believe him, ask ya mom (you can ask)
She'll tell you how she does 'em all the time (and she will)
So kids say no to drugs (say no)
So you don't act like everyone else does (like I do)
And there's really nothin else to say (that's right)
Drugs are just bad, mmm'kay?

[Mr. Mackey] (Eric Cartman)
Come on children, clap along (SHUT UP!)
Sing along children (Suck my motherf*ckin dick!)
Drugs are just bad, drugs are just bad (South Park is gonna sue me!)
So don't do drugs (Suck my motherf*ckin penis!)
so there'll be more for me (Hippie! God damnit!)
(Mushrooms killed Kenny! *fart* Ewww, ahhh!)
(So, f*cked up, right now..)

Most people call me either Derek or D. I will respond to both. If you’re reading this, I am guessing that you want to know more about me. I am sixteen and a sophomore at the High School. I am bisexual and if you have a problem with that, I seriously do not want to hear about it, you are not going to change me in any way. I have a few family members that I feel very close to such as my cousin Shannon, aunt Carla, aunt Lynette, and cousin Eric, everyone else, I kinda feel distant from. These relatives mentioned above, I can pretty much tell anything to or talk to them about anything and they will listen.

I am very absorbed in music. Music controls my life, basically. My moods are often caused or helped by music. If I am upset or depressed, I will listen to R&B or hardcore. If I am in a crazy, party-like mood, I will listen to pop, world, and rap. If I am just living, I will mainly listen to hardcore music. My parents always ask me why I like hardcore music because they cannot understand what the artist is screaming but it really is not that hard. If you let me listen to a song a few times, I can more than likely tell you everything that they are saying. There are a few bands though that get difficult to understand though.

I get very annoyed by people very fast so if you say something wrong or just annoy me by your presence, it would probably be best just to delete me because you will not hear anything nice from me. There are also those people that have all of their friends add me because I’m just “oh so cool” but if you do that, just expect you and all of your friends to be blocked. Really, as I read over everything I’ve just typed, even if you’re in my friends list, you are not really my friend, just according to Myspace, you are. I only have a few close friends that I would trust with my life, everyone else is just kinda there. Yes, I am friends with many people but I am only close friends with a few people.

I hate politics and the television. The television is always used for propaganda from politics, or some food product or some fast food chain or some hygiene products. Anyway, none of it is necessary. That is why I do not watch television. I love to watch movies, mainly horror or children’s fiction, but I will not watch television.

I have many ways of being contacted. I have MSN, Yahoo, many e-mail accounts, this page, or my cell phone. You may ask me for them if you want them but I will not promise you anything, if I do not like you, I will not give them to you. Also, please do not stalk me and find all of my information and talk to me on things I did not give to you. Yes, I am aware that I have my screen name at the top of my about me box but I only accept messages from people that I add or have in my list already. If you want to know, too, with my cell phone, I have a phobia of it. I hate to talk on the phone. I will only talk to certain people at certain times but that’s only if I think they deserve the exception otherwise, if you call, you will get my voicemail. You can leave me a message if you want to but I never return calls unless it is majorly important.

If there is anything else you would like to know that I did not answer in this, feel free to message me or something, just please, do not annoy me. I read every message I get, but some I do not feel the need to reply to so if I do not reply to one after I read it, then I doubt I’ll ever respond so just accept that I’m not going to talk to you. Thank you for reading.

(Im A Comma Whore)

Peace Out

SLAP Magazine’s Mark Whiteley and Joe Brook are the Team Captains for the Regular team while The Skateboard Mag’s Dave Swift is Team Captain for the Goofy team. Each Team Captain picks five skaters to pre-qualify for their Team. These five pre-qualified skaters—the Starting Five—will go straight into the GvR Finals on Sunday.

On Saturday, qualifiers for the rest of the Goofy and Regular Team skaters take place. The Goofy and Regular skaters will compete to make the cut of ten for each Team. The ten from each Team then join the five pre-chosen skaters and these fifteen skaters then comprise each Team for the Finals on Sunday.

During Sunday’s Finals, skaters on both Teams will compete in two distinct sessions. In the first half, a coin toss will determine which Team skates first. Each of the three heats will feature five different skaters from both Teams who will skate one introductory run followed by a five-minute jam. In the second half, each team, goofy and regular, will skate in two 10-minute jams.

Each team may substitute freely after five minutes of the heat, however, the starting five for each jam must be different. Injury substitutions are allowed at any time. There will be two Heats for each team, Regular and Goofy. Finally, if less than 25 points separates the two teams, the Team that is behind in overall score will challenge the other Team to a game of SKATE in any area or on any obstacle in the skatepark they choose. Each Team will pick two skaters to go head-to-head and the winning team will receive an extra 25 bonus points towards their overall score.
