SkateboardVillage News: Brave Art Show
By: skateboardvillage.com

Since its inception in 2005, Brave Art has been bringing raw urban and street inspired art to the mountain. If the medium is the message, then the message here is that nothing is off limits, everything is canvass, and the people will not go quietly.

Building on two years of success, the Brave Art festival will again showcase street artist superheroes and alter egos from Gotham to the City of Angels. Showcasing over 30 artists in a 150 plus piece installation, art mediums include canvas, sculpture, skate decks, photography, film and graffiti. DJs, drinks, livepainting and an artist reception make the Brave Art opening a must-do event. Last chance to purchase art and deck out your own walls will be Friday April 20.

Brave Art Opening Party / April 13 / 8pm  An auspicious date, Friday 13 th , to mark an auspicious occasion. The opening party for Brave Art turns life into art, and art into life. Brave Local's Reception / April 15 / 8pm Features local Whistler talent showcasing their work, with local DJs providing the soundscape.

Toronto's Stan Wadlow park under construction
Our eastern Canada Skatepark Construction Specialist Eric Meunier is back, and the skaters of Toronto couldn't be happier because they know what that means: silky smooth crete! Eric is working with two local construction firms, building the plaza style street course and small bowl section. Toronto, get ready to shred!

Toronto is smokin'! Ellesmere park under construction!
Ground is broken on phase 1 of the Ellesmere skatepark. This fluid park with street flavor is also being graced by the trowel of Eric Meunier, our eastern Canadian Skatepark Construction Specialist. Hopefully he'll be back next year to build phase 2: the bowl!

Summer's almost over. Wow it was wild though.
Since May i've hit up Calgary, Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa, Edmonton and Grande Prairie.
If you ever get a chance, montreal is the most unreal place to skate. Good scene, good spots, bars with mini-ramps, crazy french kids who scream "TABARNAC!" when they don't land their shi*t. And a rediculously awesome female skateboarding scene. There's comps every week...sometimes every day..sometimes 2 in a day...demos...and you run into all sorts of people downtown..Orkus indoor and south parc indoor...skate bars that play vids while you drink the night away...restaurants that give you "the skater deal". Let's not forget Big-O. It's something else. Toronto's pretty gangster...really fun spots if you can outsmart the porks for a bit, gay festivals, the CBC manny pad. I only experienced it for 3 days so I don't know enough, but it was a blast. Ottawa was fun minus sleeping on the streets for 2 nights due to evil money hungry cell phone companies who steal your hotel money. Lots of talent out there, and you can skate spots for hours without getting kicked out, or at least we didn't get kicked out of any when we were out there. Lots of fun ledges, especially by the hobo bridge there's a gooder, but really fun spots everywhere nonetheless. Calgary locs keep it gangst. Edmonton has lots of emos. Grande Prairie has no spots, a shi*tty park if you're a beginner, but a good scene and super tight shops (dark flavour downtown and southside). But yeah fun aint over yet. Philippines in a month and then who knows. Long beach? Vancouver? Victoria? Kelowna? Probly keep it west for a change. anyways hope to see you all somewhere. peace

…16-year-old professional seeks to reclaim Slam City crown he captured in 2003 in Vancouver when $100,000 skateboarding event hits Calgary for debut August 25-27, 2006

CALGARY (Thursday, August 10th, 2006) –– Ryan Sheckler of the United States is the first former champion to confirm his entry for the Slam City Jam North American Skateboard Championships to be held August 25-27 at Stampede Park.

The 16-year-old Californian, who won the silver medal at X Games 12 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles last weekend, will be among those competing for USD $100,000 in prize money at Slam City, the longest-running skateboarding event in the world and part of the World Cup of Skateboarding.

“We’re very pleased to have received the entry of Ryan Sheckler, who will bring to Slam City Jam the kind of world-class skills which have made him one of the hottest names in skateboarding and we’re looking forward to having him back as a former champion,” said Kleo Landucci, President of Slam City Jam, which is making its debut in Calgary this year. “As an event that prides itself in featuring the best of the best, we’re always pleased to see former champions come back to either defend or reclaim their crowns.”

A native of San Clemente, California, Sheckler won Slam City in 2003 in his first year of professional skateboarding at the age of 13. He has won several events including the XGames and Gravity Games.

Sponsored by SOBE, Oakley, Almost, Etnies, Volcom, Tensor, Ninja Bearings, CCS, Bones Wheels and Nixon, Sheckler is known for his strong and consistent skating style. Versatile enough to be touted as one of the world’s best in Street, Tranny and Skateparks, Sheckler has become one of the most recognized personalities in skateboarding on the strength of videos and commercials for Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes, Gogurt and Sony Vaio video cameras. He has also appeared in two movies: Grind and MVP2.

The multiple California state champion began skateboarding at the age of four in his driveway and by the age of seven, was doing tricks on his own backyard mini-ramp.

“He’s a perfect example of the kind of athletes who make Slam City Jam what it is and we’re thrilled that Ryan will be part of our debut in Calgary this year,” said Landucci. “He’s guaranteed to put on a great show for our fans at Stampede Park.”

Over 100 of the world’s top pros will vie for championship titles as part of a festival that showcases the best in skateboarding, music and lifestyle. Three-day SERIES Tickets are available now on line and by phone at www.ticketmaster.ca and at 1.403.777.0633. Single-day passes go on sale at 10 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 11th, at all Ticketmaster outlets. The latest information is available at www.slamcityjam.com

…former Olympic snowboarder and international television commentator to work alongside Dave Duncan of World Cup of Skateboarding August 25-27, 2006 at Stampede Park

CALGARY (Tuesday, August 8th, 2006) – Calgary’s own Tara Teigen has signed on to serve as Co-Host and MC of the Slam City Jam North American Skateboard Championships August 25-27 at Stampede Park.

Teigen will be featured in the Calgary debut of Slam City after serving as a skateboard host for ESPN at X Games 12 in Los Angeles last weekend. She was a Snowboard Analyst for CBC at the Torino Winter Olympics earlier this year and for NBC at the Salt Lake City Games in 2002. She represented Canada in snowboarding at the Nagano Winter Olympics in 1998.

“We’re very excited to have Tara Teigen as Co-Host of Slam City Jam,” said Kleo Landucci, President of Slam City Jam. “Not only does she have great street credentials as a former action sport athlete herself, she brings with her television and announcing experience from some of the biggest events in sports, including the Winter Olympic Games and the X Games. She’ll do a great job for our fans.”

The Olympian will work with World Cup of Skateboarding announcer Dave Duncan, the world’s leading skateboarding announcer, to give a dynamic one-two punch to the proceedings at the Calgary Corral and RoundUp Centre.

Teigen’s resume includes stints with CBC, OLN and Sportsnet in Canada and NBC and ESPN in the U.S. She has called the Winter X Games. Teigen appeared at the Crankworx Mountain Bike Festival last month in Whistler.

As an action sports athlete, Teigen placed 10th at the Winter Olympic Games in 1998. She was a Canadian National Snowboard Team member for three years and in 1997, won the World Cup Overall Champion title for half pipe. In 1998 she won the half pipe competition at the Canadian National Championships and a bronze medal at the US Open.

Teigen is actively involved in action sports above and beyond her roles at events like the X Games and Slam City Jam. She is involved with the Canadian Snowboarding Federation and is the Head Coach at the Camp of Champions, a Ski and Snowboard camp in Whistler, B.C. She attended University of Calgary 1993 -1995 after graduating from Calgary’s John G. Diefenbaker High School.

…Slam City Jam festival of skateboarding, music and lifestyle on tap for Friday, August 25 through Sunday, August 27, with more than 100 of the world’s top pros at Stampede Park

CALGARY (Friday, August 4th, 2006) – Single-day tickets for the Slam City Jam North American Skateboard Championships, a three-day festival of skateboarding, music and lifestyle to be held August 25-27 at Stampede Park, go on sale at all TicketMaster outlets on Friday, August 11th.

Groups of 20 or more single-day tickets can be purchased in advance at a 20% discount as early as this Friday, August 4th. Details regarding group sales and special discount offers can be found on the Slam City Jam website: www.slamcityjam.com.

Single-day tickets start at $21.50 for general admission for children under 12. Adult and youth general admission tickets are $27.00. Bronze tickets guaranteeing reserved seating in the Calgary Corral and access to see Tony Hawk’s Grand Jam, Friday, August 25th, are $24.00 for children and $30.00 for adults and youth.

“We’re still encouraging our fans to take advantage of our three-day SERIES Tickets, which offer a 20 per cent savings on regular admission and guaranteed access to see Tony Hawk perform on the Boom Boom Huck Jam in the Round-Up Centre, but we know lots of our fans can’t wait to get their hands on the single day performances of their choice,” said Kleo Landucci, President of Slam City Jam. “We wanted to remind our fans of their chance to buy SERIES Tickets now on line and over the phone and to reserve their single-day tickets beginning August 11th.”

Landucci noted there were still a limited number of Silver Slam SERIES Tickets available through www.ticketmaster.ca, but that all Grand Slam and Gold Slam SERIES Tickets had been sold out.

“We’re really pleased with the welcome we’ve received in Calgary this year and we’re excited to announce more of the big name entries this month,” said Landucci, who confirmed X Games star Ryan Sheckler of the U.S. yesterday and opened the summer countdown to Slam City by announcing popular Canadian skateboarder Chris Haslam of Richmond, B.C. on May 15th. “Having entries like Chris Haslam already confirmed is important for us and our fans. We’re also looking forward to announcing our music line up beginning next week.”

More than 100 hours of skateboarding, music and SK8 Expo programming are included in the cost of a three-day SERIES Ticket, which begin as low as $60.00 for Bronze Slam child. “There’s no better way for our fans to get the best seats at the best prices than with the three-day SERIES passes, but we’re very proud of our value pricing all the way around. We’ll be offering skateboarding, music and videos, plus our SK8 Expo and autograph signing sessions for the price of a movi.e and snacks and less than the price of most concerts, so we’re happy about being able to do that in our debut in Calgary, especially with a line up that also includes Tony Hawk and Eric Koston’s Es Game of Skate and the best Canadian amateurs in the DC Nationals.”

Three-day SERIES Tickets are available now on line and by phone at www.ticketmaster.ca and at 403.777.0633. The latest event information, including venue and seating charts, are available at www.slamcityjam.com, the official web site for Slam City fans.

The California group is receiving props the world over for their expansive worldview and state of the art hip hop. Blackalicious features rapper Gift of Gab, a group of musicians from around the world and producer Chief Xcel.

“On behalf of all of their fans in Canada, we’re excited to welcome Blackalicious to Slam City 2006,” said Kleo Landucci, President of Slam City Jam. “They are a perfect fit for Slam City and we know they’ll be a real treat for our fans in Calgary. We’re pleased to be their only Canadian date of the summer.”

Blackalicious is this week in Chicago for two concerts and then in Los Angeles for a show held in conjunction with X Games 12. Their other remaining performance before their set at Slam City will be LA’s Little Tokyo-Tofu Festival Saturday night, August 12th.

Hot off the release of their fifth CD, The Craft, Blackalicious is riding high in collaboration with Grammy Award-winning engineer Russ Elevado, who helped mix their recent record after working with Alycia Keys on Songs in a Minor, with Erykah Badu on Mama’s Gun and with D’Angelo’s Voodoo.

Three-day SERIES Tickets are available now on line and by phone at www.ticketmaster.ca and at (403) 777-0833. Single-day passes go on sale Friday, Aug. 11th, at all Ticketmaster outlets. The latest event information is available at www.slamcityjam.com

The Life and Times of Joe: Jebus the Festival is crazy times
By: joe

So yeah.... good times at the festival. And it's not even over yet.

I've taken ONE day off partying since last Thursday. Monday. And I regret it so much, haha. I missed the Playboy Mansion party at Garfs, and from the pictures I've seen it looked like a good one. Other than that, it's been amazingly awesome, good events, great parties, and lots of cool people.

I'll post pictures and stories later.

We got a Really awesome award from singing at the Festival of Gold In New York at Riverside. Then after our hard work we went on a ship cruise and partied it up in the middle of the ocean. It was awesome i had soo much fun, met soo many new people. Check out my photos in the photo gallery. I will also soon be showing the video of my last offroading and close to death in the car.
