So this last week i've been skating a lot, its been pretty sweet.  i also worked a lot last week too. I'm also going to school full time at a community college with all the other bright and shining stars of america. hectic schedule to say the least. that said i'm not working at all this week, so i'm planning on dedicating myself entirely to the hobby/sport/lifestyle we all love and share.

Last week i sustained a really bad bruise on my knee and a stretched/torn ligament in my wrist.  i did this by doing a simple rock to fakie down a 3 foot spine and getting my wheels caught in a near by ramp at the base of the spine.  my knee cap and palm hit ground first stretching my wrist in an upward motion and making me clinch it then lying there for a minute because my knee hurt to bad to get up. after making a scene which i hate to do i skated around doing little lip tricks and shoves until i left roughly 30 min later.  it sucked.

i tried to upload a picture of my knee but this f*cking website wont load any of my pics which is bullshi*t.

moving onward i'm really starting to pick up on flip tricks.  i'm not much of a switch skater.  all i can do is switch shove, switch shove rewinds and switch front shoves. weak i know.  anyways i'm  really close to hardflips and yesterday i landed a fs and bs bigspin.  it was really sweet.

minnesota has a really great skate scene.  lots of kids and plenty of old timers.  its to the point where there's a bit of symmetry between skaters. and by that i mean that they all get a long (for the most part) and kinda act like they know each other.  this goes for majority of the parks i've been to.  i've been skating at new hope, mn park a lot lately.  really small.  too small. great practice park though.  3 different sized boxes, a bench, 1 rail but i hate rails so thats fine by me.  couple more things (quarterpipes, fun box, hubba, stairs, and etc.)  its not perfect.  it has a couple big flaws but what do you expect when a skatepark is built by a city council of rule donning adults who just build because of pressure from the citizens.  if you've never stood on a board you shouldnt have any say in its parks.

i think more places should try to emulate the skate plaza idea.  its more expensive but ramp companies are ridiculous too. i think a skate plaza is nicer looking, better for skating, be less upkeep and would keep more skaters off the streets than a cookie cutter skatepark that looks like one from the next town.

anyways that was a huge blog post.

until next time

So I had a party at my house.... go times! Total Blasty Blast! My Bud Curtis is Acid droppin' off my deck straircase to the side walk. He launches off the 6th step and bam! Snaps my Zero deck! Which I got for a 26 of Jager. No biggie, but to pay for damages, I make Curtis take a 4 ounch shot of Alberta Primiem Whiskey... Yuck! So the next day after cleaning up from the Party, we head to Peace River to get a new deck at the Local Shop (Frontline). This shop is the shi*t! My favorite place to hang in Peace and to buy shi*t... So I get in there and the deck that catches my eye is a Plan B Jereme Rogers Love Hate Skate deck. Last seasons, but hey I'm not a huge rider. Its 40% off, comes out to $60 dollars, but I say "Give it to me for $50 man..." and he marks it down to $50. Sweet Deal! So now to get it gripped tapped..... They... are... out! Damn it! So I leave it there for 2 weeks and my bud Nat picks up for me, now I am happily riding around town. Good Times, when shi*t changes!

Road Trip to Sydney, Cape Breton - Nov. 8th, 07

Motivated by new skate parks and seemingly endless great weather this fall, we packed the car and hit the road Friday morning (October 5th) stoked for a fun packed weekend on Cape Breton Island. After many hours of gibber-jabber road banter we abruptly pull over to check out a rail in front of a church. Bruce & Mike are feelin' it and to the failing light a rail session goes down. A sweet end to a long day spent in the car. (Photos: After noon day prayer Mike Bernier Front Boards and Bruce Treby Back 50-50's, avoid the scourge of God, and leave one hard working' (old) rail something to be proud of.)

Not too early, but earlier than I like there's rustling in the room, the boys are pumped to get going, ah, its so easy! We stayed at the Beacon motel which is right across the street from the new Coxheath Skatepark. A Spectrum Concrete creation, the park has lots to offer once last night’s milk shakes/vomit are sopped up, pre-breakfast roll around in the heat of the October sun. Props to Megan Detheridge, Jim Barnum and everyone else in the community that have made Coxheath a reality, a huge asset to Sydney and a real training ground for the local skaters.

After getting our fill and checking out of the Beacon, we headed out on a "shore tour" to make the most of the afternoon. Our first stop is Glace Bay to check out a new bowl, also the work of Spectrum Skateparks. This would be the first "above ground" concrete bowl I've ever skated. Above ground you say? Why's that? "Well son; ya see, this whole area is right contaminated" from all the industrial work that went down here. "O I see so now its recreational land for the kids, OK THEN!" (Sydney area has huge industrial history)

Anyhow really fun, high speed corners with extensions for the Gnarl and a spine into a mini bowl to get the young ones into it. Well built and no graffiti yet! Fresh & new, nice job people. While I enjoyed the trany and caught up with local Steve Waden, Bruce drew a flood of kids to a "dangerous in every way" rail across the lot. The situation became a heat score so we carried on down the shore... (Photos: Mike Bernier 50-50's large hubba @ Glace Bay; Chug chug, Mike and Bruce get safe in someones boat)

The scenic coastline led us back to the Sydney waterfront where we found a nice high stage/wheely setup. Good times till the sun dropped and the wind off the water chased us back to the warmth and safety of the Delta hotel. After setting in to a few cocktails the fitness room, pool & hot tub facilities entertain us for the evening. There were some tense moments in the pool when Bruce Ass charlied some kid in the back coming out of the waterslide real fast, the Dad was right there watching the whole thing and yelled at his kid and made him cry adding insult to injury, we sighed relief and took off to Megan's house for some late night BBQ action.

Sunday mornin' brings a quick dip for the boys while Watson sleeps... fancy breakfast @ the Delta with Bruce, naked in a complementary robe, Bernier, and infamous Mackel. The service and food were probably the worst we've ever ate, especially for the price. Stopped in the elevator after by an old couple enjoying the small amount of time they have left, got to experience; one more punch, and entered complaining. Mackel found hair in his eggs. Or egg in his hair...Back to the car bound for home. Sydney folk are super hospitable (surprise surprize) and we all agreed that returning to the island is a must. A good example that you don't have to go far to find new spots, good times and interesting culture.

RDS TEAM UPDATE - RYAN OUGHTON

Ryan Oughton was anxious to skate after spending a little too long indoors due to the winter weather in Calgary so when his friend Devin Morrison suggested they attend Tiki Room's Welcome to Winter contest they hit the road to Regina.  Instead of doing the speed limit of 110 he drove a little faster and got pulled over for doing 190 and was immediately arrested for dangerous driving. The officer quickly realized that Ryan's US registration on his car wasn't legit and also had his car towed.  After throwing Ryan and Devin into the back of his car, processing the two criminals and handing out a huge fine to Ryan, the cop ended up dropping Ryan and Devin off at a local highway diner minus the car.  Seven hours later Ryan's other friend Brenden rescued the two stranded would be competitors from the diner in the middle of nowhere and gave them a ride to the hotel.  After two hours of sleep and a couple Kokanee's for breakfast Ryan pulls of a clean run and won the contest. Here's a financial breakdown of Ryan's contest weekend:

hmm. this boy got jumped at my school. I t was a white guy, jumped by all black dudes. They say they jumped him because he was white. obviously this caused a huge uproar. But you know wjat I noticed? Nobody knows what his name is, or how badly he was hurt. That doesn't seem to matter. But, I'm gonna pray for him.....& his attackers. People never think to pray for the victimizers, only the victims. Well, these boys are somebody's baby too. Some momma is at home crying over them. So, I'm going to pray for all of them. pray that God weighs  heavy on the hearts of the people deciding their fates, & those who know them. If you want, you can pray for them too.

Monday, April 16, 2007 @ Home VS Greenville
Today was our opening track meet. It turns out we were afraid of Greenville for nothing.I did the 3200 meter(2 miles), 70 meter, 800 meter, 400 meter, 200 meter, 1600 relay, 3200 relay, 400 relay, 800 relay, and long jump.Ashleigh did all the same.Ashleigh and I both had a lot more events than you're supposed to...

In the 3200 meter run, I finished first.Ashleigh and I were side by side and on the last lap I told her to take it.She said no.We got sprinting and I tripped and fell ON THE FINISH LINE!Just before Ashleigh got there. So yeah, I won.I broke Ashleigh's brother's record, well I shattered it.Ashleigh broke it too.

I have a huge scrape on my thigh, a scrape on my knee, my hip is bruised and cut open.I put my hands out so I landed and scraped them and didn't want to do the relays they were so bad.Hannah and Ashleigh helped me into my sweats when I wasn't up...lol

In the 70 meter, Ashleigh got first.I got second.Again, both of us shattering his record.

In the 800 meter, I ran a different heat than Ashleigh and we both got first.I got this record and Ashleigh missed it by 1.267 seconds.

In the 400, Ashleigh lead the whole lap until about 10 meters from the start/finish and I passed her and won.

In the 200 meter, we was in a different heat again and we both brought in first place finishes.

In the 1600 relay, i started us out strong.Hannah kind of slacked. When she got it to Autumn, we got behind.Ashleigh got it and ran the anchor and had everyone passed in the next 15 seconds. We won that one too.

The 3200 relay...we ran this very weird.Ashleigh and I won though. They had two people for every part of the race.Ashleigh and I were both on anchor. We had never done this before, but it was kewl.We were really suprised at Alyssa because she started out rough, but really made progress.

The 400 relay, Hannah brought us out.Weird...anyways.She got it to Autumn and Autumn passed it to Ashleigh. She got most of the lost places back, passing it off to me, running a strong anchor and winning it for us.

The 800 relay was fun!Taylor brought us out.She got it to Danielle, who passed it to me who made up for all but one spot.I got it to Ashleigh and she sprinted faster.Ashleigh lead us to victory.

In long jump, Ashleigh beat her brother's record. She got 26 feet.I got ike 24.Hannah scratched, so Ash and I had to make up for it.

i hve a story or two for yall. i write them myself so ya they may be a bit wierd

My Stories

There once was a boy named Aaron. He was a great person. One day he met this girl. Her name was Miranda. Now Aaron was only 14 but he loved her not only because she was pretty but because she was a wonderful young lady. He would talk to her every day. Then one day he started hearing things about her that weren’t good. So the next day Aaron asked Miranda about it and she said they went true. Now Aaron believed her on this because he loved her a lot. But one day he met this guy named jack and had told him about the things that he had heard about him. Well jack and Aaron started talking and Aaron found out the truth about Miranda. So the next time Aaron talked to Miranda he told her that they were over. She told him not to do that and that she loved him more than anything in the world. He told her to leave him alone until he was ready to speak to her again. So she didn’t talk to him for a long period of time. Finally he started talking to her. Now Miranda wasn’t home so Aaron was talking to her cousin Sam. Now Sam was trying to be Miranda and Aaron asked about her. Sam told him that she wasn’t Miranda and that Miranda was in that hospital. Aaron was shocked and asked Sam what had happened to her. Sam told Aaron of how Miranda had cut her wrist and was bleeding really bad. Aaron was in tears by now and telling Sam that he didn’t mean to hurt her. Sam told him that Miranda would be fine. Aaron had a bad feeling about that and told Sam to let Miranda know that he loved her greatly. A few days passed and Miranda died in that hospital. Sam told Aaron the bad news a few days after it happened. No one else knew about the bad news but Aaron. The next day jack asked Sam where Miranda was she told him that Miranda had died in the hospital a few days ago. He asked her why she hadn’t told him about it before and she said to him "how would you feel if your cousin died in the hospital". He said "I feel bad enough because she was my girl friend". Sam looked at him in a strange way and said "when did you take her back". He looked back at her and said "you didn’t know about that I thought Miranda told you". Sam shook her head and said "well she has been in the hospital a few days and she hasn’t spoken much". A few days later Aaron comes by and asks Sam how she is doing. She said she was ok and that she felt really bad about Miranda’s death. Aaron looked at the ground and said nothing. Sam looked at him and said "it’s not all your fault you know". He looked at her and said "what do you mean she cut her wrist because of me". Sam looked at him and said "you’re not the whole blame for this she just had too much on her mind at one time". The next day jack came by and asked Sam if she was ok and she said "I’m ok I guess". He took her hand and kissed it then he said "I'm sure you will be fine". Sam looked him in the eyes and said "I don’t know how to feel right now". He looked at her and smiled. He told her that it would be ok and that Miranda is watching her and would want her to be happy. With tears in her eyes she walked away. The next day Sam met up with jess. Jess had come by to see how Miranda was doing. Sam hadn’t told jess anything about the death so she had no idea what was going on. Jess knew Miranda very well and loved her dearly. Well jess asked Sam how Miranda was doing and sam's eyes filled with tears. Jess asked her what was wrong and Sam told her that Miranda had died in the hospital. Jess turned away from Sam because she didn’t want Sam to see her cry. Sam took jess’ hand and said "don’t worry I know how you feel". Jess asked Sam why Miranda did it. Sam said she didn’t know but to ask Aaron or jack they might know. So jess went to see Aaron first. She talked to Aaron for about an hour. The told her of how he cared dearly about Miranda. Jess just looked at him and said nothing. Aaron looked at her and said ‘jess I'm sorry for what happened ok I didn’t mean for her to do that to herself". She just looked at him and then began to cry. A few days passed and when Sam went to see jess she found her on Miranda’s bedroom floor with a not that said "I love you Miranda and I will die for you too". Sam left the room and forgot about all of it for the rest of her life as long as she lived.

The end.

There once was a girl named miranda. She was a very nice young lady. There was this guy she liked very much. His name was aaron. Now miranda cared a lot for aaron but she didn’t knw how to show it. One day this guy named jack had come along and asked her out. Now not thinking of what aaron would say she went out with him. At this time she was with jack and with aaron. Well one day the two guys meet and they find out what miranda was doing and get pissed off at her. She then trys to explain and neither of them would listen to her so she leaves them to think of wha they want to do. She waits a few days before she decides to even talk to them. The night miranda supposed to talk to the guys she didn’t because she was afraid to face them. Tht same night miranda gets into a huge fight with her brother and he ends up stabbing her in the side. Now miranda cant even move and is bleeding terribly by now. So she asks her cousin sam to get on under her name on her computer and tell evey one what had happened to her. At first no one belives what sam says and ignores her. So mirandas brother gets on and tells them everything that happened with his brother and miranda. They feel so bad for miranda after they find out what happedn to her. They ask what they can do for her and he says "I don’t know you will have to ask either her or sam about that one". He then leaves the roomm and sam gets back on. They all ask her if ther is anything that they can do for her. Sam said that they would have to ask miranda. So a few days later when miranda came on everyone asks he wht they can do for her. She says there is nothing they could do for her. Aaron tlks to her and asks if she is ok and she says no. he then asks her whats up. So she tells him everything that happened to her. So he told her that it would be ok and that she wasn’t going to get hurt anymore. So she lifted the side fo her shirt up and he just looked at her and said nothing. She looked back at him. Then she looked away. He lifted her chin so she was looking at him. He looked into her eyes and then he lightly kissed her. She just stood there and looked at him he let go of her chin and started to walk away. She grabbed his arm and pulled him back twards her. She said "aaron don’t worry ill be ok". He looked at her and said "hun are you sure your goin to be ok". She looked at him then at the stitches on her side. He then took a look at her side and told her that if her brother ever touched her again he would either kill him or just seriously pound her brothers head in. she looked at him and kind of smiled a little at him. He looked back at her and smiled. The following day she seen jack. He asked her if they were still together and she said "I was meaning to talk to you about that". He looked at her and asked her wht she meant about it. She then told him that she couldn’t see him anymore. He walked away from her. A few weeks later jack told miranda he wanted to be with her for the rest of his life. Now aaron was still in a mood with her and had already found someone else. She told him she didn’t knw. So a few days passed and miranda had went to see jack and talk to him but before she left jack rand the doorbell. Mirandawas so supprised to see him there. He handed her a little box and got down on one knee. He then said to her "will you marry me". Mirandas eyes filled with tears and she said yes. He was so happy that he picked her up and carried her to the bedroom. When he put her down she said "jack hun I’m still too young for that". He smiled and said I knw that’s not what I brought you here for. She looked at him in a stange way and asked for what then. He told her to turn around and she would see. She turned around to see eminem standing right there. She let out a loud scream and then hugged jack and kissed him they lived happily ever after.

The end

My Journal: DEAR MAYOR,
By: Taiwan_Vaughan

Dear Mayor,

I’m one of those people that say they’ve been “saved”. There are a lot of us now, 32 million worldwide and the numbers are climbing rapidly. Although still relatively small in comparison with other clans, our institution has been the driving force behind popular fashions, cutting-edge music, film, and most modern art since the day our culture spawned 60 years ago. Whether alone, or in large groups, our place of worship is never limited to a church, temple or mosque, as we’re free to practice anywhere we like. Though seen in some ways as a cult, what binds us as a whole is not Jesus Christ, Jehovah, Allah, Buddha or even Hello Kitty. In fact our “fundamentalists” are no more than professional athletes, and our scholars produce what become our “bibles” in the form of magazines and DVD’s.

Never sure of whether to call itself a sport, an art, or even a new religion; skateboarding has always been in a league of its own. Together we skateboarders are a secure and unified nation. We share the same joy, the same pain, the same culture, all without needing a single leader to lead us, or boarders to fence us in. We are multinational, and within each of the countless counties we occupy we have no trouble being multicultural. All ages included, our way of life is physically and mentally healthy. A vast majority of us are staying out of trouble and away from a life of videogames while our games are often seen as a vast improvement over others. In the past decade, according to the American NSGA (National Sporting Goods Association) our relatively young sport has been replacing older sports such as Badminton, Billiards, Golf, Soccer, Baseball and Softball, Tennis and Table Tennis, Mountain Biking, and even Basketball, both on the Play Station and in the real world.

It was 17 years ago I started skateboarding. Since then it’s been without a doubt the most positive element in my life, and like so many guilt-ridden Catholics I feel indebt to its existence. Though great for everyone, skateboarding is a perfect outlet for “at risk” kids especially. Personally, any time my life started to go downhill, or if I got into trouble, it was always skateboarding that brought me back to life. Skateboarding’s secret societal healing power is in how it naturally fosters a need to be different and allows those who do it to progress and develop a healthy sense of independence, giving them improved confidence in all walks of life. It provides kids one more opportunity to get outside and actually do something instead of get bored and into trouble. Skateboarding continues to support life long after childhood as well. Being closely connected with the skateboard industry grants an array of highly satisfying job opportunities. I myself make a harmonious living instructing skateboarding, shooting photography and video of professionals, writing stories for skateboard magazines and even designing parks and plazas to skate in.

As one of many grateful skateboarders in existence, I sense a strong need to introduce skateboarding to others, protect what has made it great and keep alive the things that attracted me to it in the first place. It’s my desire to “keep it real", to keep the roots or fundamental characteristics functioning and in intact. Like a farmer I make sure it has plenty of regular waterings, enough fertile soil to root in, and as much light as it can get. Being from the west I’ve witnessed skateboarding in its mature form and feasted on its much larger fruit. Taiwan planted the seed just 10 years ago and it, like many of Taiwan’s borrowed culture or sports, is still a slow growing, vulnerable seedling, in need of special care and nurturing, and must first be grown tall and strong before any type of fruit can be had.

CURRENT ISSUES

In a land lacking translated magazines and subtitled DVDs from the western world, and no strong local history, the skateboard scene here is like an empty shell. Without a clear idea of specific origins, skateboarding and its surrounding economy suffers from the same thing the “Hip Hop”, “Punk” or other borrowed western “youth cultures” suffer from in Taiwan. It quickly becomes a short lived fashion show if not enough new fans know what makes those western scenes shine so bright to begin with, what spawned them, or how they grew so big as to notice them halfway around the world.

In what looks like proof of this theory, over the few years I’ve been in the Taiwanese skateboarding scene, the Taiwanese participation in skateboarding seems as though it has stalled at a modest midway point, odd for a sport that’s #2 next to Snowboarding in a list of the fastest growing sports on the planet. “Faddism” has indeed set in as too many have treated it as meaningless fashion, doing little or nothing to sustain a push forward or to help Taiwan’s skateboarding evolve and grow into the kind of scene one would and should have seen by now.

Not helping the situation also, is the fact that in Taiwan, and in much of the surrounding countries in Asia, skateboarding and its appeal to young people have been used by official “outside” organizations and their corporate associates mainly as a way to help promote the next cell phone, or products that have very little, if anything, to do with actual skateboarding. At the same time, skateboarding and its high potential for boosting tourism and its many profound social health benefits are being ignored and thus not cared for or utilized to the full extent they could be. Official decisions and planning that are said to aid in the promotion of the sport of skateboarding in Taiwan are currently being made by those who would not dare step on a skateboard themselves, and since they don’t skate they naturally know very little about skateboarding. Unfortunately for the Taiwanese tax payers, these “outsider associations” and there confused ideas on skateboarding have been approved by the Taiwan government to promote skateboarding since it first appeared in Taiwan barley 10 years ago. The Chinese Extreme Sports Association (CXA), to name a major example, is officially approved by the federal government to build “skateparks” and put on promotional events in name of something called the “X-Games”. It is quite apparent to whom the facilitation is supposedly for, that these planners and organizers lack the essential skills, experience, and cultural knowledge needed to help produce a strong, long-lasting skateboard scene in Taiwan. In fact, most of the local skaters I’ve talked to believe very strongly that in the C.X.A.’s “misdeeds”, they and their fantasies about us, our scene and industry, may actually be doing more harm than good. It is becoming ever more obvious that what they lack is the involvement of proper expert talent, and in this case they need not search any further than the skaters themselves.

Taiwanese skaters have had next to zero say and with the experts shut out, the parks they steam ahead to build for us, using strange partnerships and at costs that are strangely much too high, lack the necessary user-input and are inappropriately designed. To this day there are over 20 caged-in “X-Games” parks in Taiwan (about one in every major town), all cookie-cutter in nature, and not a single one made with expert skateboarder input. Instead they merely copy what they’ve seen on ESPN (another “outsider institution” wanting in). Up until recently, Taiwanese skateboarders (most of them merely high school aged) were not able, and in some cases too lazy or even unwilling to organize to attain official status and proper government support. But now with worse and worse parks going up, and more and more corporations taking us for granted in these contests, and with less and less respect to our culture, we’ve had no choice but to take matters into our own hands. Even skaters as young as 13 are slowly starting to realize a few things, things that have led to something called the Taichung Skateboarders Association. To become a recognizable and respected group in our community, autonomous in our direction, less vulnerable to exploitation and in charge of what we need to sustain natural growth; we needed to form the TSA. With careful long-term planning, we believe Taiwan’s skateboard scene and its surrounding industry can attain the kind of greatness and exposure it normally attains in every other country it exists in once skaters themselves are in the driver’s seat.

WHY THE OUTSIDERS WANT IN…

The Big Money in Skateboarding

l          There are an estimated 32 million skateboarders in the world, 12 million of whom are in the U.S.

l           Skateboards and skateboard-related products, from about 300 manufacturers of professional-level equipment, generate approximately $5.2 billion in annual retail sales around the world.

l          “Tony Hawk Pro Skater” video game captured the #1 ranking in both sales and revenue for video game sales in 2000, and has continued to achieve top spot each year since.

l           The 2001 Nickelodeon TV Kid’s Choice Awards placed Tony Hawk as “Favorite Male Athlete” in front of Tiger Woods, KobeBryant, and Shaqille O’Neal.

l           Tony Hawk is the 9th most searched for Athlete on yahoo.

l           Skateboarding is growing faster than mountain biking, golfing and 50 other sports tracked by the National Sporting Goods Association.

l          “More Americans rode skateboards last year than played Baseball, according to the Sporting Goods Association.” –USA Today, Aug. 17, 2001

l           Since 1987 the growth rate for skateboarding has been 7.2 percent per year, while baseball declined 27.9 percent and basketball grew only 5.1 percent in that same period. (From the Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association’s January 2001 "Sports Participation Topline Report")

PROOF IS IN THE PUDDING

Visions for the future:

Taiwan’s first real skater-designed skate parks and multi-use plazas

Skateparks should be much more than just a place to skate; they should be powerful generators. They should generate more skateboarders and keep them skateboarding forever after they start.

Involving the youth and those with greater experience has been proven to work in Canada, the United States, Australia, and all over Europe. In Canada I was one of the founding members of the Vancouver Skate Park Coalition (VSPC), a coalition of skateboarders and BMX riders fighting for a place of our own, something our government had refused to grant us for well over 20 years.

We first sought a single indoor facility for the long Canadian winters 9 years ago., When we finally got approval to build a, “for skateboarders - by skateboarders” park, it was a huge success. Since then we’ve managed to help construct over 50 (cost-effective) other ones, each better than the last. They’ve been labeled the best in the world by professionals and skateboard magazines for being the most “modern”, “creative” and “technically advanced” concrete skate parks in North America for years and years. They have been hailed by parents, teachers, the police and the government for providing a sustained positive outlet to practice challenging skills and spend one’s time in a safe, social environment.

Because of an organized and highly passionate, self-motivated group like the VSPC, Vancouver is now discovering the benefits of some of the first “multi-use parks and plazas” in the world. The parks are a place where the skaters and the public co-exist comfortably in the same area, livening up parts of the city in the process.

“X”tremely Misunderstood

Last but not least, we as a skateboarding society want to inform the rest of society (especially the one that watches far too much TV), that skateboarding is not all about rings of fire or daredevil freak shows. What we do is about personal growth and our own individual successes. To 99% of us, skateboarding is not “X-treme”. In fact most of us are offended by mere use of it. Some even detest the word extreme or any cute use of the letter “X” in relation to us, since it has literally come to symbolize the corporate exploits of our talent, image and positive energy. At the very least, the word “X”-treme“ reminds us of the overly used marketing propaganda that all too often bears a dorky picture of a phony skateboarder, serving only to further confuse the public.

Style or technique, it doesn’t matter, skateboarding is completely free and self-paced. To the average skater a televised corporate contest seems a lot like a cheap corny circus act, devoid of meaning or soul. The corporate sponsored contests in Taiwan are rarely judged by skaters and the courses that we are enticed to perform on are made even worse than the “X” parks. Attendance by skaters in the televised “X-Games” have gone down over the years as they begin to see the events are mere jokes. Skaters in Taiwan’s young emerging skateboard scene are now finally old enough, or awake enough to suspect a certain form of meddling and many are becoming increasingly disappointed or annoyed with them generally.

A park of our very own making (events included)… can change all that and do a much better job of promoting skateboarding and the positive roll it naturally plays in any modern society.

Our plan is to eventually build (and take care of) a skater-designed, multi-use plaza and park, as well as an indoor facility for skateboarding, art and music. I like to think of the idea as a “Stock 20” for skateboarders.

Your campaigns have always caught my attention as they often emphasize support for the youth and nurturing the diverse cultures that come to Taichung, as well as the quintessential importance of tourism. It seems you have a clear vision of what it will take to make Taichung a truly modern and international city, especially as it relates to your young people, the ones bringing new life and culture to the city.

The TSA would like to pull you away from your busy schedule and invite you to one of our monthly meetings to show you what we’re currently working on and discuss these issues in more detail.

As everyone knows, your young people truly are the future of Taiwan! ….Let’s help make it both a healthy and thriving one.

In sincere respect to you, your island, and all your people,

Vaughan Neville

 Interview with Ruben Najera
Questions and lifestyle photo by “Scoffman
Action shot by Sheyla V.

So before we get started are there any shout-outs you want to give? Definitely!!! All of my sponsors!! Jason at SCOFF skateboarding hell yea indestructible laces man!!!Mike G. at ) nice skate shoes, STRUGGLE skateboards, Lisa at Destructo & Speed Metal, Jason at Gripgum, Eric at OGIO, John at Thiesnuts hardware, Lisa at Peter Grimm, Dylan at olliepop, Scotty at Taildevil and  Isaac at Cali Boardwear. I would also like to thank my beautiful lady Sheyla in which I adore and love. She supports me 100%. And my family of course no doubt!!!

So how did you come about to be on the Scoff team? Well I think it was an email I received from you back in the day. I believe I am one of the original riders. The concept was so rad and I had never seen anything like it. You truly have to get a pair of laces to see what I mean. It takes forever to tear through. It’s as if there’s some magic powers embodied within the laces.

How long have you been skateboarding for? About 7 years give or take.

What first got you into it?My cousin JC and some dude in high school that I used to watch skate.

Who did you look up to when you were first getting started?

Some local skateboarder they called “Q” that dude was so tech and was ollieing like 7 boards back in the day it was amazing to watch when I was younger.

What kinds of trouble do you and your buddies get into while skating? Have you ever been arrested before? Aww man hell yea. The Struggle guys and I have been through a lot. We are always running from the cops. Also way back in the day I remember getting tackled by an officer because we were running from him in a spot. Guess the guy thought we stole something. They ended up taking me and three other guys to jail; we sat in there the whole day until my friends mom bailed us out. They put us in one of those rooms where you can’t see through the mirror but they can see you, it was a trip. They put us in handcuffs and everything, threw us in the cop car.

What’s your favorite skatespot? Aww man, the black box park is buttery, I like skating downtown and the manual pads at Torrey pines. I still haven’t found a spot that I truly love though or I could consider my favorite because I really am into skating new stuff all the time. I get tired of spots fast I guess.

What is it that you love most about skateboarding? The feeling you get cruising the streets. And how it takes your mind off of everything else shi*tty going on in the world.

You told me before that your sort skipping from place to place right now and living out of your car sometimes. How’s that going for you, found a permanent place to stay yet? Yea actually I am back in my hometown right now been here for a little while now about a week or two id say. Things were hectic the last 4 months of my life though. Pretty much you could say I lived out of my car and at fast food for 120 days. Or cup of noodle if I got lucky and found a microwave. It was harsh I also got in two huge car wrecks during all this man I went through so much crap. My car caught on fire and I had to jump out the window when I was involved in an insane car wreck while driving on the 5 coming from . I had no car after that and resorted to public transportation in order to get to and from my job. Which meant major couch crashing and an even unhealthier diet? But you know what I learned more and got a real taste of the street life through those tough times man. And I had my skateboard the whole way through.

If you’d never pick up a skateboard, what would you be doing today? Dude I would be up to no good. Maybe I wouldn’t even be alive. I thank god for skateboarding. Because of skateboarding I kept my head straight, I even met my girlfriend through it. Through all my hard times it kept me alright. It kept me sane in an insane world. I can thank it for so much good in my life. It has taken me a lot of places and I never want to put it down. Skate for life man. SKATE FOR LIFE.

Ok,please dont like throw this one away because of that immature title, i seen it on a myspace comment. But seriously skateboarding had been a part of my life for 2 years now, and in a way it gave me a life, i know it sounds silly but before skateboarding i was just some random kid popping zits on his face.Skateboarding has taken me a long way from  that kid with no direction i used to be  .After i started skating my entire outlook on life changed,it went from looking as something as a road block to just another ledge for me to grind over.Because when you skateboard you learn to have a different perspective on life. I remember like maybe say a year ago when i first got the ollie down i thought i was the best, i was jumping off of little 4 sets and over sidewalks ,and eventhough the ollie isn't the hardest trick my friends never really said oh you suck, go home or called me a poser or anything like that they just said way to go because they knew that skateboarding wasn't just about landing the awesomest tricks it was about that feeling that you got after finally landing that trick you've been killing yourself trying to learn. Then after that i started to move on to harder things like the kickflips and heelflips, eventhough on those earlier days when i couldn't land any of them i felt like giving up when i first walked in the house, but like an hour later i was ready to go back outside and give it another try.
thats a picture of me landing one of my first ever heelflips at the old cracked parking lot where i landed alot of first tricks.

This is me after ,soaked in sweat ( lol it almost looks liked i pissed on myself lol )
holding my crappy alliance board ( back then when you're first starting you really dont care what board you're skating as long as you're skating) feeling like The Great Rodney Mullen.

Skateboarding is almost like a  drug, while you pumped up you can't really feel the pain, you can take a 15 set fall and be ready to do it again. The feeling you get is the best, and its like time just floats on by,because while you're skateboarding it's like you're in another world (except when hot girls walk by you notice them and try to take it up a notch )almost like you're in your own reality. It feels like you can do whatever you want, like you look at huge buildings and in your mind you're like "i can ollie over that with right launch,or you see a extra long rail and you're like i can blunt grind that.

Skateboarding almost gives you a since of acomplishment, like you can succeed at anything you try if you work hard enough.

Skateboarding almost makes you feel like a kid again, like when you were young and you  would think that anythings possible.

Skateboarding is like a release for everything that's going on in your life, your friends are acting weird, not making the perfect grades, didn't get asked by a girl to the Sadie Hawkins dance by a girl( well you do care but while you're skating you forget all of that),it really dont matter as long as at the end of the day i can get out there and shred something up.Well thats pretty much all i have to say.Just keep skating for the love of skating and nothing else.
