So were finally on our last leg of finishing the Scoff Project. The mini mega ramp after being shut down by the goverment originally back in March of 08 we haven't been able to get anything done and problems with getting a new filmer ontop of that We finally got to build the new support structure for the ramp on October 11.
It was about damn time! Hopefully we will be able to finish the new structure by the end of this month and get this little monster up and gunning again!

Heres a snapshot from our most recent build day this October.

Photobucket

There will still be 2 more support structures added to bring it up to its true height of 16ft when finished

1.what is the g.u.s.t.? the girls united skate team or g.u.s.t for short is the first and only female skateboarding company to ever hit maryland!

2. what is the g.u.s.t about? the g.u.s.t. is about bringing the female skateboarding scene together and closer and to spread the awareness that we are out there and we rule and we will not be taken lightly!

3. is this just a skate crew? no this is a full blown skateboard company!

4. do you have products?  we have a spring product line  with 2 shirt graphics and various colors to choose from with the price of $17.99 plus five dollars shipping anywhere in the united states! and we also have stickers that are 8.5 inches long and sell for $1.50 each!

5. how did you get involved in the female skate scene? this is a funny story...i was playing tony hawk's pro skater 1 and the first person i beat it with was elissa steamer and i got really stoked and that started to get me involved into female skateboarders and thus i been helping out the scene ever since and in '06 i decided that the female skateboarding scene needed a new real company that promotes their girl riders unlike other companies who do not promote their female riders...my work began in 01 when i started to help with xgirlsport.com(online female skateboarding zine that is now defunct) and after the owner moved to spain i was dissapointed cause i was really stoked and wanted to keep it going and i felt empty so i decided this should fill the void!

6. why distinguish female skaters as female skaters and not just skaters? good question! as i see no gender since i am a feminist i believe that girls in general do not get the credit they deserve and it is just the same as saying hey look at that purple smurf walking down the street. it is just a way to describe someone no disrespect intended it is just a adjective.

7.what does the girls united skate team co make? right now shirts which cost $17.99 with five dollars shipping and stickers that cost $1.50 SO BUY BUY BUY!

8.can i be sponsored by your company? u can but rather i let u on is a different story haha with this team even though it is based in dundalk, maryland i have riders from other states because i want to expand the movement to the four corners of the united states and inbetween i am ALWAYS on the look out for girls from maryland which is my main focus! i really want to build up a team of md girls which is hard to do since there are not many here that skate! but i do not have a problem with sponsoring ppl out of state.

9.how do i get sponsored? u can get on by making sure u are one of those skaters who are constantly pushing urself to the limits and progressing every single time u go out and having a positive attitude and no negativity,u must also be able to skate all terrain I DO NOT ACCEPT GIRLS WHO ONLY SKATE ONE THING! i demand that my riders be able to skate everything which means but not limited to ditches, rails, steps, ledges, mini ramp, banks, ski jumps, flat ground and so on! if u dont understand what i mean take a look at the skating of vanessa torres, elissa steamer, jamie reyes, lauren mollica, monica shaw etc etc AND I ALSO EXPECT FOR U TO REPRESENT AT CONTESTS,LOCAL SKATESPOTS,MYSPACE AND EVERYWHERE ELSE U GO the more u promote ur sponsor the better things will be for u product wise and the better the mood u put me in!.also a video of some sort helps as well! pics will not be good enough. i expect a classic sponsor me vid rather it be vhs or dvd i cant accept any other formats but those 2 and u must film once in awhile and take photos! traveling is not neccessary but it helps both me and u in the long run!

10. what do i get when im on? u get whatever we make! however dont expect to be getting 20 or 30 shirts a month cause that is just impossible cause i must also sell shirts as well so be thankful for what u get!

11. what is the policy with flowing riders? i dont believe in flow!

12. what can i do to help spread the word of the g.u.s.t. movement? u can spraypaint a logo somewhere,or use stickers, write the g.u.s.t. on ur board, word of mouth, use our banners which can be found on our website at gustmd.tripod.com there are plenty of choices for everyone we will also put ur support on our website! if u got it on ur board or spraypainted it somewhere or got stickers or wearing the shirts WE WANT TO SEE and they will be on our website at gustmd.tripod.com!

13.where are your products made? in the good ole u.s.a ON THE EAST COAST!!!. i dont outsource stuff like alot of skate companies cause outsourcing means stuff is made overseas and sent here and is lower quality (crap) (like shoes and pencils for example) i believe in keeping products american made and so does the i.a.s.c. which i strongly believe in!

14. i am a major skateboard company and am interested in carrying your product or sponsoring one of your riders! get at me and we will talk business!

15.will i be in videos and/or mags? there is nothing in this world but possibilities

16.why do u not accept add requests from guys, bands,or non full skate companies? because i talk to guys all day long and most of them i have on other accounts and girl skateboarders is my target audience and the market im into...and no i am not sexist or an a**hole this is not about bands it is about strict skateboarding and nothing more and nothing less! so only girl skateboarders and skate companies will be on here! i run a tight ship!

17. do you have any riders? yes we do! we have three 3 riders named "styles" from md,amelia from az and jasmine from md!

18.do i have to jump down 50 stairs or so to get on the team? no however if u want to see what kind of talent im looking for just look at the vvc vid getting nowhere faster or AKA: GIRL SKATER to get a good idea of what i want!

19. will the g.u.s.t. skate co ever make a video? haha well im not going to rule it out but there is sooooooooo much f*cking work to get a video made such as getting footage from riders, then editing (the worse part of all),and getting the dvds pressed and stuff so i dont know but it could happen in the future u will just have to wait it out and see! it would be rad though!

20. what is the story with boards and wheels etc? well boards are a good possibility i been recently looking at manufacturing companies of course before boards come out we would have to do some r&d with them before they get released to the public! and as for wheels i have recently (as of 8-14-07) checked into them  but im pretty f*cking picky about wheels so alot of r&d would go into them and i only get american made shi*t. pretty good chance that what u have under ur feet is chinese made and im not down for that lower quality bullshi*t!id rather spend alot of money on quality products then spend less money and have ppl come back to me and tell me my shi*t sucks! i want to do the best i can to provide the best quality stuff! it isnt easy having a skate company but u can probably expect wheels for all terrain! and will come in colors! expect to possibly see gust boards and wheels in our 2008 line! if u want to see a mock up of our boards and wheels check out our photo section in the first folder!

21. can i link your website/myspace on my site/myspace? duh of course u can! feel free to plaster that shi*t anywhere and everywhere! just let us know!

22. is there a set trick list to get sponsored? NO! just be a good well rounded skateboarder like u see in vids as i said before good transition skills (grinds to fakie, fliptricks to fakie, properly done grabs (no floating..good popped ollie grabs)and stalls like blunts and disasters and flip tricks to stalls and/or grinds, flip tricks and stuff down stairs (5 steps and above) and tech tricks on ledges, tricks on banks such as fliptricks to fakie and shi*t like that! i dont think i can be anymore obvious if u have watched any skate vids at all then u should know what a good skater is!

23. i live in so so and there arent really any comps here? ny,md,fla,ca,pa are the biggest places for comps u should go out and travel to contests cause it helps u get recongized and gets your's and our names out there and ppl will want to buy our shi*t if u do good!

24.where can i send my video? u can send your video to either our myspace inbox or to our office in maryland it is your choice!

25. i already have a certain sponsor (i.e. clothing, board, wheels, etc)? well this is kind of tricky regardless u will get our shirts and stickers but if u have a board sponsor or wheel sponsor then that means u wont get wheels or boards from us unless u quit ur current board/wheel sponsor! it is just the way things go! sorry....

26. is there a age limit to skate for the company? no!

Road Trip to Sydney, Cape Breton - Nov. 8th, 07

Motivated by new skate parks and seemingly endless great weather this fall, we packed the car and hit the road Friday morning (October 5th) stoked for a fun packed weekend on Cape Breton Island. After many hours of gibber-jabber road banter we abruptly pull over to check out a rail in front of a church. Bruce & Mike are feelin' it and to the failing light a rail session goes down. A sweet end to a long day spent in the car. (Photos: After noon day prayer Mike Bernier Front Boards and Bruce Treby Back 50-50's, avoid the scourge of God, and leave one hard working' (old) rail something to be proud of.)

Not too early, but earlier than I like there's rustling in the room, the boys are pumped to get going, ah, its so easy! We stayed at the Beacon motel which is right across the street from the new Coxheath Skatepark. A Spectrum Concrete creation, the park has lots to offer once last night’s milk shakes/vomit are sopped up, pre-breakfast roll around in the heat of the October sun. Props to Megan Detheridge, Jim Barnum and everyone else in the community that have made Coxheath a reality, a huge asset to Sydney and a real training ground for the local skaters.

After getting our fill and checking out of the Beacon, we headed out on a "shore tour" to make the most of the afternoon. Our first stop is Glace Bay to check out a new bowl, also the work of Spectrum Skateparks. This would be the first "above ground" concrete bowl I've ever skated. Above ground you say? Why's that? "Well son; ya see, this whole area is right contaminated" from all the industrial work that went down here. "O I see so now its recreational land for the kids, OK THEN!" (Sydney area has huge industrial history)

Anyhow really fun, high speed corners with extensions for the Gnarl and a spine into a mini bowl to get the young ones into it. Well built and no graffiti yet! Fresh & new, nice job people. While I enjoyed the trany and caught up with local Steve Waden, Bruce drew a flood of kids to a "dangerous in every way" rail across the lot. The situation became a heat score so we carried on down the shore... (Photos: Mike Bernier 50-50's large hubba @ Glace Bay; Chug chug, Mike and Bruce get safe in someones boat)

The scenic coastline led us back to the Sydney waterfront where we found a nice high stage/wheely setup. Good times till the sun dropped and the wind off the water chased us back to the warmth and safety of the Delta hotel. After setting in to a few cocktails the fitness room, pool & hot tub facilities entertain us for the evening. There were some tense moments in the pool when Bruce Ass charlied some kid in the back coming out of the waterslide real fast, the Dad was right there watching the whole thing and yelled at his kid and made him cry adding insult to injury, we sighed relief and took off to Megan's house for some late night BBQ action.

Sunday mornin' brings a quick dip for the boys while Watson sleeps... fancy breakfast @ the Delta with Bruce, naked in a complementary robe, Bernier, and infamous Mackel. The service and food were probably the worst we've ever ate, especially for the price. Stopped in the elevator after by an old couple enjoying the small amount of time they have left, got to experience; one more punch, and entered complaining. Mackel found hair in his eggs. Or egg in his hair...Back to the car bound for home. Sydney folk are super hospitable (surprise surprize) and we all agreed that returning to the island is a must. A good example that you don't have to go far to find new spots, good times and interesting culture.

Lunenburg, Nova Scotia (Aug 07')
The day began like many others at the Homegrown skateboards.  Everyone was prancing around searching for innocence and truth.  Yes.  Everyone was searching for their soul’s haiku.  Someone was mumbling about missing a kick at the shower door.  And the non-believers were all wrapped up in a fair trade suitcase for deportation.  In short, everyone was at loose ends, including, of course, the downstairs, bakery patron who cornered me to relay a story about Quasi Moto, a belfry, and a face that rings the bell with no arms.     In light of such a story, it’s not easy to find truth and innocence.  I mean, who the hell is Quasi Moto anyway?  And why does he have no arms?

The truth is, I don’t know how I ended up there at all – there at the Homegrown Skateboard factory – where Jesse and Anna tuned the whistle to blow new t-shirts into the air like confetti.  I mean, only hours before I was just minding my own business, caring for a plastic drinking straw, and then I’m standing, looking at the new Homegrown t-shirts, as homegrowner, Jesse, explains the latest designs excitedly:

“What.  Yes.  Here it is.  Here they all are.  And look at these little guys going for a hike.  This blue colour here is just a bit lighter than teal, you know.  But that’s to the naked eye.  Here’s the signpost in Newfoundland, yes, but I took mine from a slightly different angle…”

And so on and so forth as he’s all expert witness to the latest glimpse of genius in another Homegrown product installment.  Faced with all of these soulful energies, I had no choice but to apply for a job with the company.

“I can weave socks.” I said to Jesse.
“Groovy.” said Jesse.

And like many other plans exchanged in the factory, ours tiptoed away like a wounded pterodactyl to seek refuge in the intricate feng shi of one of the surrounding workbenches.  Yes, when I last saw our sock plan it was nestled next to a pinup of Edie Sedgwick kissing Leon Redbone.  Indeed, there’s no accounting for that whatsoever, but we have to take ourselves seriously despite time’s easy passing.

Then it hit me.  I need not make socks.  Instead, I will enter the factory from a new door.  I will attempt to define this elusive Homegrown soul I’ve heard so much about.  As a surfer without much of a penchant for plywood, I doubted my own capacity for this feat.  But, I was so pleased with the innocence of my drinking straw that I was immediately on assignment.  Yes.  Define Homegrown soul – that is the next thing on my things to-do list.

* * *

Episode One in the search for a definition began as I watched a ramp session featuring Jason Keddy and Jesse.  Jason and Jesse both laid out some smooth ramp interpretations.  As Jason found his stance in fitted jeans, Jesse preferred the baggy khakis.  Of course, their two smooth styles beg the question, is this their way of showing Homegrown soul?  And what if each skater’s joints were equally visible?  What then?  And what about their socks?   And who the hell is Quasi Moto?

As the session rolled on, I found myself seeing the ramp as a permanent wave, and I began to wonder if you could ride down the line as a surfer does on a wave (from top right corner to bottom left, for example).  Could this be done?  And if so, would it help me to define the secrets of a Homegrown soul?

“Is anyone surfing this thing.”  I ask.
“O, yea.  Wait until Dale gets here.  And Greg Baller too.  They’re surfing it, just like our boy
Keddy here.”  Jesse replied.

so, like Tom Waits in ballet, I’m onto the ramp now taking encouragement.  I don’t know why I’m on it, but I can’t seem to resist.  The plywood wave’s whisking under the board fast and buttery golden.  Surely there’s a fine mist of Homegrown soul in the air, and no one says a word.  It is only Anna who can capture it, singing,

    “Don’t think twice, it’s alright...”

Indeed, who could think twice about a feeling that truthful, while the rain fell to bring the night to a close.  The contest would awake us tomorrow, and I hoped for another bit of mist to solidify this mystery search for Homegrown soul.

* * *

As the sun seared down on the Lunenburg skatepark, the Homegrown posse assembled to create a contest.  The sweat ran down the sides of parked motorcycle engines.  Yes.  Lunenburg Skatepark: Home of the Mini-Grinder sweat.

As the contest began, I reasoned that it was too hot to find answers to my assignment.  Clearly, the best thing to do was to leave the contest in favour of taking the pulse of the local community.  Did the reverberations from the skatepark fun box echo down to harbour side boat building shop where the Bluenose emerged to ride the rails of the sea?  I mean, ask yourself, is the Bluenose that different from a skateboard?

Ask yourself, is skateboarding really that different than fog?

* * *

Later that night, back at the Bakery, the ramp session pulsed into a giant seamonster.  Blackout 77 encouraged us to find work in Mexico and to eat our pickles, while the team riders laid out their Homegrown souls for all to see.

In the end, it’s not just about skateboarding, this Homegrown soul.  It’s the whole thing.  It’s in the ramp top lighting.  It’s in the pinups over by the factory workbench.  It’s in the hands of the children playing with the parking lot gravel.  It’s falling onto to everyone in the form of La Have fog.  We’re all curling up into it – this Homegrown soul – wondering how will find it again when we awake tomorrow.  And it’s a credit to everyone involved that it’s never choked.  It’s never been forced.  The Homegrown soul shambles out of the river and welcomes you if you want to be welcomed.

It makes you an offer you can’t refuse:

Step back onto this rolling rhythm.  Make a play from the heart of your mind’s feet.  Skate.  Banter.  Laugh.  Tom fool.  Sleep well, and come back tomorrow.

Basic info, when and where were you born and where are you residing now?

April 7th 1988, born and raised in Vars, Ontario (Ottawa) and currently residing in Whistler B.C.

Why Whistler?

We’ll I’ve been snowboarding longer than I’ve been skateboarding and growing up I had always heard how good it was to live in Whistler. I had never planned on moving up here until my good buddy Karl Windle moved up, told me all about the Creekside Skatepark and how I could still skate all winter. After hearing all the good news I moved up for the season last year and now I can’t picture myself being anywhere else during the winters.

Photo Russell Brown.

How long do you plan to stay in Whistler?

I was planning on coming back every season for the next few years, but now that the Creekside Skatepark might not be here next year I might not be coming back………

When did you start skateboarding?

I started skateboarding in grade 7 just staying after school using all my friends’ boards. Then on my 13th birthday my family and I were in Victoria, so using all my birthday money I bought some second hand board from a skateshop down there as my first board.

Who do you usually skate with?

Anyone who’s down to skate like ALL the Orleans locals, FOKUS boys, EQ guys, Mitch Barrette, Matt Canadien, and my little brother Nick Gauthier

You recently got hooked up with Annum clothing, what has that been like working with them?

Working with the Annum guys Steve Wilson and Brendan Cavanagh has been sick. I only met them last year and since they’ve put me on their team I’ve become good friends with them. Instead of them just giving me free product like most companies they let me be a part of the company. I’ve been helping with some designs and other business aspects while they’ve been showing me all the tricks of the trade. They’ll be having a bunch of new clothes coming out soon so keep your eyes open for it.

Where have you traveled skating?

This past year was the first year I started taking actual skate trips besides to Montreal.

I was living in Whistler for most of the spring so I skated around there for a bit, and then moved to Port Coquitlam for 2 months. I skated mainly the Poco Park, and didn’t get any filming done the whole time I was in Vancouver. I ended up getting ragged on from all my buddies back home for that. Then moved back to Ottawa and took a trip up to Quebec City, MTL, then me and some buddies took an epic week long road trip down to Austin, Texas.

Favorite skate spot?

The Creekside underground mini bowl.

Got any travel plans for this year?

I want to live in downtown Vancouver for most of the summer, then take a greyhound from Vancouver back to Ottawa, stopping at all the big cities to skate and see some friends, and then a few more trips to the states. Then where ever else I get a chance to go travel and skate.

New Years resolution?

To stop falling on my wrists.

What is up with your wrist, it seems like you have been rocking casts for the last 6+ months?

Yeah about that…….well a few years ago I broke my right hand scaphoid and ended up getting a bone graft from my hip to my wrist along with a cast for 5 months. Then the next year I broke it again, ended up getting another bone graft from my other hip along with a pin and a cast for 4 months. I find out in a few weeks when I’m getting the pin removed. As for my left wrist I found out just over a month ago that I’ve had a small broken bone in there for most of the summer that I didn’t know about. Since I never got it checked out it’s too late to fix it, so now I have a broken bone in that wrist permanently. It sucks sometimes………..

Shout outs?

Thanks to my Mom and Dad for everything they’ve done for me, my brothers, all the older guys I looked up to skating, Garrett Dagenais, Jesse Ringer, J.I.P.S, everyone that’s helped me out, Annum Trading company, and to Lenny for making this happen.

Last night I was at Jiminy Peak. I went in JJ's lodge for about 20 minutes. Came out and my board was gone. I'm so pissed. Why would you steal my board when there's 100 nicer newer ones around?!

Anyways its a Black K2 Mini Zeppelin. It's 142cm. Has a red devil and K2 Symbol on the bottom. There's a small devil inbetween the bindings on top. There's a Duct Tape Paw Print on the tail. Has Navy Blue Ride LS Bindings with a leash attached. Serial Number 1083716.

I've had this board for 4 years now and its over 4 years old. I really want it back and I'm offering a possible reward for the finding/return of it.

On top of that my laptop crashed and now I have to use my parents computer which sucks. I cant sleep so I woke up early and here I am. I have work today and its freezing raining. Yuck.

It's just not my weekend T_T

Isnt it funny that when you go to the shops with your friends you look down at the girl with black jeans and studs but smile at the girl wearing a a mini with a tshirt that barely cover anything?

Isnt it funny you can change your music taste to impress a guy but when it comes to a girl who likes her own music and her own style, you give her a mouthful?

ISNT IT FUNNY that a guy can get away with being a gangsta but the emo gets a mouthful from everyone

are you laughing?

Isnt it funny a emo can be quiet all through the week but gets more shi*t from everyone than the girl who sleeps around and sells her virginity?

ISNT IT FUNNY that you dont mind your friends drinking, smoking but the minute someone mentions emo music you can give them a lecture on melodramatic teenage outcasts?

im not laughing.

ITS SO FUNNY that you and your friends can make a girls life hell and not know anything about the silent battle she might be fighting.

ISNT IT FUNNY that you can call emos, punks, goths the retards but still manage to get through your day without an inch of guilt in your heart.

HOW YOU CAN CALL A GIRL A POSER, HOW CAN YOU SAY "YOUR NOT EMO" OR "ATTENTION SEEKER" WITHOUT SPENDING A SECOND TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHY THERE ARE CUTS ON HER WRISTS AND WHY SHE SPENDS HER LUNCHTIMES CRYING INSTEAD OR LAUGHING WITH HER FRIENDS

KEEP ON LAUGHING

isnt it funny you can say and do all this without any idea of what is going on in this persons life

without knowing her situation with her friends

or her family

or her LIFE

BRAVE ISNT GOING UP ON STAGE AND STRIPPING

BRAVE IS NOT SAYING A SPEECH

OR DUMPING YOUR BOYFRIEND

BRAVE IS

GOING TO SCHOOL NON UNIFORM DAY AND NOT FOR A SECOND CARE WHAT THE WHORES AROUND YOU ARE SAYING ABOUT YOUR CLOTHES

ITS LISTENING TO YOUR OWN MUSIC AND BEING PROUD OF IT

ITS GOING THROUGH EVERY DAY WITH THE THINGS PEOPLE SAY TO YOUR FACE AND BEHIND YOUR BACK AND YOU STILL KEEP QUIET

ITS KNOWING WHAT YOUR "FRIENDS" ARE SAYING ABOUT YOU AND STILL CALLING THEM YOUR FRIENDS

BRAVE IS KNOWING THAT TOMOROW ISNT A BRIGHT AND HAPPY FUTURE

ITS ANOTHER DAY OF BITCHING AND DODGING RUMORS

KEEP ON LAUGHING.

put this on your bebo if you agree with this!!!
