…former Olympic snowboarder and international television commentator to work alongside Dave Duncan of World Cup of Skateboarding August 25-27, 2006 at Stampede Park

CALGARY (Tuesday, August 8th, 2006) – Calgary’s own Tara Teigen has signed on to serve as Co-Host and MC of the Slam City Jam North American Skateboard Championships August 25-27 at Stampede Park.

Teigen will be featured in the Calgary debut of Slam City after serving as a skateboard host for ESPN at X Games 12 in Los Angeles last weekend. She was a Snowboard Analyst for CBC at the Torino Winter Olympics earlier this year and for NBC at the Salt Lake City Games in 2002. She represented Canada in snowboarding at the Nagano Winter Olympics in 1998.

“We’re very excited to have Tara Teigen as Co-Host of Slam City Jam,” said Kleo Landucci, President of Slam City Jam. “Not only does she have great street credentials as a former action sport athlete herself, she brings with her television and announcing experience from some of the biggest events in sports, including the Winter Olympic Games and the X Games. She’ll do a great job for our fans.”

The Olympian will work with World Cup of Skateboarding announcer Dave Duncan, the world’s leading skateboarding announcer, to give a dynamic one-two punch to the proceedings at the Calgary Corral and RoundUp Centre.

Teigen’s resume includes stints with CBC, OLN and Sportsnet in Canada and NBC and ESPN in the U.S. She has called the Winter X Games. Teigen appeared at the Crankworx Mountain Bike Festival last month in Whistler.

As an action sports athlete, Teigen placed 10th at the Winter Olympic Games in 1998. She was a Canadian National Snowboard Team member for three years and in 1997, won the World Cup Overall Champion title for half pipe. In 1998 she won the half pipe competition at the Canadian National Championships and a bronze medal at the US Open.

Teigen is actively involved in action sports above and beyond her roles at events like the X Games and Slam City Jam. She is involved with the Canadian Snowboarding Federation and is the Head Coach at the Camp of Champions, a Ski and Snowboard camp in Whistler, B.C. She attended University of Calgary 1993 -1995 after graduating from Calgary’s John G. Diefenbaker High School.

Three-day SERIES Tickets are available now on line and by phone at www.ticketmaster.ca and at (403) 777-0633. Single-day passes go on sale Friday, Aug. 11th, at all Ticketmaster outlets. The latest event information is available at www.slamcityjam.com.

It's launched!

Visit it now, add your mountain biking pictures, stories, blogs, etc. It's going to be wicked.

Speaking of wicked, my ride yesterday wasn't. Haha. Two flats on one run, and I only had one tube, so that ended in a 2km walk down the road on Whistler. Ah well, the first one wasn't my fault, but the second one was. That said, the mountain bike park still rules, and the Crankworx slopestyle this weekend is going to be insane! We'll be sure to get lots of pictures for the new site that you can all check out.

If you have any comments/suggestions/ideas, let me know.

WHISTLER, Canada – July 1, 2006 – It may have been Canada Day, but it was the Aussies who ruled this year’s Red Bull Elevation in Whistler, BC. Corey Bohan of Brisbane, Australia took home the title, with fellow countryman Luke Parslow and defending champion Ryan Nyquist of the U.S. anchoring the podium, finishing second and third respectively.

Widely regarded as the world’s best BMX dirt-jumping competition, this year’s edition featured 40 of the top riders soaring over massive discipline-defining jumps. When the dust settled after Friday’s qualifying round, 20 riders had an opportunity to take home the title.

Ultimately it was Bohan, the first BMX dirt rider to win back-to-back X Games gold medals, who produced a killer combination of sublime technicality and huge tricks in his trademark style. The number one qualifier after Friday, Bohan delivered on his ranking’s promise in the event’s final run, hitting a downside whizzy over the hip, no-handed opposite 360, and an epic last jump featuring a one-handed table-top 360.

“To be on the podium with Nyquist and Parslow is amazing, I’ll ride with those guys all day, every day,” said Bohan. “I was a bit nervous on the way things were going, but pulled it together and I’m already looking forward to next year.”

Looking to repeat his stellar performance in 2005, Nyquist started with a solid run but fell on his second. His throw-away run spent, Nyquist finished strong, throwing down a solid 720 on his third run, and laying it all on the line on his fourth, delivering a combination of 360’s and a backflip one-handed X-up.

“People were laying it on the line and doing wild stuff, so I’m happy with any kind of podium finish. Compared to last year, the level of riding was way higher,” said Nyquist. “The setting was beautiful. It’s Canada Day and there were so many people out to watch. You really can’t have a better place to have a contest.”

Parslow delivered arguably the most impressive jumps of the day, including a combination featuring a back flip on the step down bar into a huge front flip. Dane Searls, also of Australia, emerged as one of the weekend’s stars by winning best trick, a double tail-whip over the big set of double jumps.

Added Searls: “I didn’t expect to win so I’m psyched. I knew what I wanted to do, I’m just glad I pulled it off. Best competition I’ve ridden so far. The biggest jumps, the best riders, everyone’s just so pumped to be here.”

Building on the success of last year’s Red Bull Elevation, BMX icon Jay Miron applied his decades of experience to create an even more challenging and immense course, answering the call of the world’s best riders to go bigger and continue being progressive. Jumps were larger across the board, with the most substantial an enormous 40-footer, and the third largest jump bigger than any in 2005.  In between, the course included every element of trail riding, from transfers to rhythm sections to showtime booters.

Ripping the course was the strongest field ever compiled for a dirt-jumping contest, an invitation-only list that also included last year’s best trick winner James Foster of America, World Dirt Jumping Champion Kye Forte of Great Britain, and perhaps the world’s best freestyle mountain biker, Darren Berrecloth of Parksville, BC.

The riders competed for a $30,000 prize purse, with Bohan taking home $10,000. All three podium finishers were awarded a custom trophy featuring an iron, dirt-loading Tonka Truck. A panel of veteran judges, including Ryan “Biz” Jordan, Matt Beringer, and Dave Osato evaluated riders on height, style, smoothness and tricks.

Cheering on the riders were 10,000 BMX and Canada-loving fans, with red-and-white flags dotting the Red Bull Elevation course and crowd.

The competition began with practice on Thursday, June 29, qualifying on Friday (reducing the field from 40 to 20 riders) and concluded with the finals on Saturday, July 1. For more information, pictures and video please visit our website at www.redbullelevation.com

The Life and Times of Joe: Summer eh?
By: Joe

So summer has fully and completely arrived now, and it's wicked. Sure I might bitch about how it's "so damn hot" but I bitched about the rain too, so apparently you can never make me happy unless it's puking snow all night then sunny the next day. I'm pretty sure the temperature here reached "surface of the sun"°C the other day. Actually it's pretty wicked, I've been mountain biking a ton, and we've reached new heights of Bocce ball radness (including water holes).

Speaking of biking, damn is it fun. I've got a Brodie Holeshot that is great, though I do wish at times I had a full suspension (I'm not so smooth and the dualies kinda cover for me), and I bought my Whistler Mountain bike park pass on friday. It's so amazing up there, the Garbanzo chair expansion means there is 3400 vertical feet of mountain biking to be had on dozens of trails. Some of them get pretty tricky, especially on a bike not built for the park (mine) and I found that out on friday. After having an amazing ride, including "Original Sin" and "In Deep" off of the Garbanzo chair, we decided to do "Schleyer" on the lower mountain. I tried to take a "not so hot" line on one of the rock faces and managed to endo over the handlebars and land on just about every part of my body, including my hip, both legs, shoulder, back, elbow and wrist. I was very lucky that I had borrowed a full face helmet from Fanatyk Co bike shop, because all I remember is my face and head sliding across the rocks. Thanks Jon! First time I've ever really knocked my head too, guess I got a mild concussion, that was interesting. Oh yeah, and on a sad note, I was a dumbass and took my cool nerd phone up the hill with me, and managed to smash it to pieces when I fell. D'oh. Ah well, I got back up there yesterday and it kicks ass. Back at 'er again this week.

Have fun y'all!

this school year my dipcraps crew screwed up and used all our ideas 4 the dipcrap videos, so we a half finished episode 3 and nothing 4 episode 4. 2 of the crew got bmx bikes when there dad won the lottery, so we decided 2 build a dirt-ramp and learn bmx tricks with thier bikes and our mountain bikes.
amazingly enough when u mess up 6 ft in the air and free-fall with 17and a half pounds of metal between ur legs you dont get as hurt as you would on a skate board, well yester day we used the dirt-ramp 2 jump OVER 1 of the dipcrap crew and we have a whole new inspration 4 the videos

My Journal: Season Deuce
By: jblaski

Well, I guess I have to admit that the snowboard season has finally ended. Not too bad of a season....

80 days
2nd place: Badger State Games Superpipe
6th place: Midwest Open
Superpipe
Rail Jam Finals 3 times
Whole lotta fun

But I guess it's time for season two. Yep, time to start getting ready for next season. I don't really skate, at least I won't admit that I do, so I have to keep track of something else.So here it is.....

Total miles on my mountain bike this season:
43.72

**Well, I went out the other day and hit up some closed singletrack trails that are going to open in a week or two. The trails are awesome, fun climbs with some pretty technical decents. But, karma got me back for riding the closed trails by bending some stuff in my back drive train. I took it into Eric's Bike Shop (Best shop in Madison) and $90 and a new back hub later I have a bike back in service. Moral of the story....Quarry Ridge Trails are going to be awesome. **

STREETS OF LIFE

Which road will you pick when it is your time to fulfill a destiny? Some roads are like a single track mountain bike trail, while others are 8 traffic-lanes wide. Which road will you take? will it be the one less traveled or the one pursued and tried by the majority that thrive... How fast are you travling down that beaten path - or how fast are you taking the superhighway of your life. Do other drivers also sharing your path think you are a slow driver? Or are you like me, on the side of the road with the hazards on looking for your road map to life? Whatever your circumstances are, our destination is a common place, of rest and peacefulness in serenity and solitude. 200 and change in the fast lane is not for us all. Change your perspective, but dont look to long - cus the different over passes in life all lead to the single track that make us unique, however only the most insightful people will journey down these roads, where there own intelligence was what brought them there, and it is what will make us fall. DEAD END STREETS and crescents are what we owe to being lost in life, spit out on an avenue and turn left at he lights, or maybe your the type for a secluded ride - you ahead of your self saying that you must try... while the on lookers sit back and wonder why? from the moon above or maybe a universe away, we keep looking in but outward is the way. when the earth is reduced to iron and clay - maybe mankind will see it my way, paved paths lead to destruction while the dirt ones lead to personal obstructions - one is self detrimental while the other is environmental- i hope you see the symbolism in this entry, just as i did when the glass was half empty - half full, lots of opporunities like a mad cow and a bull. fads emerge and then die like life, like wife, mother and child- were all miracles just think about it....i know i am crackin a smile while others sit back and view my path taken from the birth to when i was a child, to now, I WOULDNT TAKE IT BACK. EVEN IF I KNEW HOW, hold no regrets and persue the white dry pow.
