My Blog: park skating
By: boydsurf

my area just recently added a new skate park with a nice bowl.i have not been skating for a couple of years now but am starting to go again.i need a new board and setup.since i have been in hiatus from skating i noticed a trend in narrowing in the boards.what setup is good for transition from bowls and quaters to handrails and stairs.i am 34 so when i started i was used to the wider boards and it looks like there may be a returning trend.does anyone have any input?thanks.

I need to know what sponsors like to see, which tricks, stairs, handrails, what does it take someone please tell this i have a skate team im working with called
''serpents union''.

my name is Tyler owens but my friends call me scarface due to the fact that i have a scar thats pretty big on my face but it looks cool. I got it from a car wreck that almost killed me. It was a head on collision, like ramming in to a wall going 80mph and not knocking it down. Needless to say i was back on my board in one and a half weeks with one hundred fifty nine stitches, i was rockin em well as a matter of fact adam dyet a pro sakter of darkstar,dekline,bones,etc.. met me at a demo at new-generation skate park it was the dekline demo to be exact he asked me what happened and i told him about the wreck and he said ''your lucky to be here alive kid''  i said yea and sk8boarding is part of the reason too. Most will look at that and say haha how did skateboarding help you survive, well the doc said that if i were so healthy i would have died, of course im healthy because of sk8ing.
well thats all i have time to say if anyone has questions send me a message.http://www.myspace.com/tylerowens123

So this last week i've been skating a lot, its been pretty sweet.  i also worked a lot last week too. I'm also going to school full time at a community college with all the other bright and shining stars of america. hectic schedule to say the least. that said i'm not working at all this week, so i'm planning on dedicating myself entirely to the hobby/sport/lifestyle we all love and share.

Last week i sustained a really bad bruise on my knee and a stretched/torn ligament in my wrist.  i did this by doing a simple rock to fakie down a 3 foot spine and getting my wheels caught in a near by ramp at the base of the spine.  my knee cap and palm hit ground first stretching my wrist in an upward motion and making me clinch it then lying there for a minute because my knee hurt to bad to get up. after making a scene which i hate to do i skated around doing little lip tricks and shoves until i left roughly 30 min later.  it sucked.

i tried to upload a picture of my knee but this f*cking website wont load any of my pics which is bullshi*t.

moving onward i'm really starting to pick up on flip tricks.  i'm not much of a switch skater.  all i can do is switch shove, switch shove rewinds and switch front shoves. weak i know.  anyways i'm  really close to hardflips and yesterday i landed a fs and bs bigspin.  it was really sweet.

minnesota has a really great skate scene.  lots of kids and plenty of old timers.  its to the point where there's a bit of symmetry between skaters. and by that i mean that they all get a long (for the most part) and kinda act like they know each other.  this goes for majority of the parks i've been to.  i've been skating at new hope, mn park a lot lately.  really small.  too small. great practice park though.  3 different sized boxes, a bench, 1 rail but i hate rails so thats fine by me.  couple more things (quarterpipes, fun box, hubba, stairs, and etc.)  its not perfect.  it has a couple big flaws but what do you expect when a skatepark is built by a city council of rule donning adults who just build because of pressure from the citizens.  if you've never stood on a board you shouldnt have any say in its parks.

i think more places should try to emulate the skate plaza idea.  its more expensive but ramp companies are ridiculous too. i think a skate plaza is nicer looking, better for skating, be less upkeep and would keep more skaters off the streets than a cookie cutter skatepark that looks like one from the next town.

anyways that was a huge blog post.

until next time

So last month I entered a local skate comp in Park City, and I totally took 1st place.  Cool huh?  I knew my practice would pay off one day!  It was my first and only comp so far... and I will have to admit... Competing makes me sick.  Like people who get sick when they speak in public, I got sick to my stomach each time I dropped in for my one minute run.  Dang.

Skateboarding, art and the web, Parker Newman from Popdeck.com talks about his recently launched skateboard design community.

For your chance to win one of Popdeck's limited boards sign up for a profile on SkateboardVillage and send friend request to Popdeck on SkateboardVillage. On April 23rd one of Popdecks friends will be randomly chosen to win a Popdeck board.

What is Popdeck all about?

Popdeck is essentially a skateboard design competition. Started out as a passion between our love for design/art and skateboarding. We have always collected cool decks as art after we skated them up, and this was just the natural progression.

So who is popdeck or involved with creating the idea?

My twin brother and myself start Popdeck. We were previously in the t-shirt business and have always had a passion for skateboarding. We're located in Chicago.

How does it work?

We have an ongoing contest for skateboard art and every 3 weeks we pick a winner, pay them a prize and print there board. The community has the obligation of choosing the winners by rating each design submitted out of 5. After a winner is chosen, we award them 200 dollars and a free deck.

Don't Break my beat Board design by: nunosk8

Where are the boards made?

Our boards are made in Pennsylvania by the good people of Penn Woods.

Where did you get the idea for the website?

We were pretty involved in the design community from our prior work, and just were so impressed by the different mediums people could use to create art. Being skateboarders since forever, it just seemed like a cool idea.

Do you think more people buying popdeck’s are skating their decks or do you think they are using them as art or to hang on their walls?

Right now we want to say that 90 percent of boards sold are by skateboarders. I think though over the past few years, we have really seen a push to people presenting skateboards as art and we hope to open up into that more. To be honest, you really can’t get a great piece of art for cheaper then 40 bucks. But, at the end of the day, it is a skateboard and most people are grinding them up.

What do you think is the relationship between Skateboarding and Art?

Skateboarding has always been a way for people to express themselves. Whether it is by mastering tricks or the entire graffiti and streetwear scene that goes with it. I think it is a dual serving relationship and we have seen a lot of artist come out that were skaters, these guys then become great artist and then give back to the skate community. A prime example of this to me is having these great grafitti artist that came out in the 90’s are now established gallery artists.

One prime example is Eric Elms, he was very into that whole scene in the 90’s. Started off as just a graf writer and now we have seen his amazing art on skate brands such as Supreme.

Why have you decided to produce and sell decks in only 20 units?

We started this as an idea to merge art and skating, but didn’t want this to be something that was completely exposed to the masses. We are a tight niche community and we really want people to know they are getting something unique and hand made. As we grow though we hope to raise quantities, but they will always be hand numbered

Squad Comic board design by: squad comic

$40 for a sweet original designed limited edition deck is a pretty sweet deal, How come you decided to make them so cheap?

It was basically for a few reasons, most importantly we didn’t want price to be a reason people couldn’t experience our brand or for people to be hesitant about ordering from us. Being a direct to consumer company as well, we wanted to take advantage of our margins and give it back to the consumer.

What are the plans for the future of Popdeck.com?

Right now we are just making our site and community better and better. We will constantly mold and improve the site. Also, expect a ton more special contest with great prizes and what not. We are also launching a gallery section, let people show off their pics and videos for prizes.

On Sat. March 22nd we had a bobcat and a bunch of skaters remove snow from the Whistler Skatepark.

shoveling snow

We started removing snow at 10am and finished around 5pm. Capilano Highway Services were so kind to let their employee Mark Johnson use the bobcat to remove snow from the park.

street_.jpg

Thanks goes out to Mark and Capilano Highway Services for their support. The park may need a little more shoveling and a water drainage system but it is skate-able and should be fully dry with the help of some sun and rain.

Dry skatepark

We didn’t get into the bowl removing any snow but the street course is a good start for March considering we are still getting some good pow days on the hill.

Skateboarding to me is pretty much everything. Honestly, It's everything. Because skating is something you can do when you're in a good mood, pissed off, or whatever. It relaxes you and calms you down, but at the same time, you're focused and energized. No matter whats going on in your life, you can always just skate. It's kinda one of those things that can make a perfect day better. (Or make a crappy day better) But there's so many different ways to ride. You can skate by yourself, with a big group of friends, or just head to a local skatepark and ride with whoever. So, no matter what your style of skating is; street, park, vert, goofy, regular, or however you choose to do it, just skate.

Skateboarding is pure fun.  I don't try to take skateboarding too seriously, because there's no fun in that at all.  I love skateboarding, and everything that surrounds it.  Being a somewhat "experienced" skateboarder myself, I'm not the kind of person that criticizes on every kid's "style" at the skate park.  Because, to me that's not what skateboarding should be.  To me, just about everybody is a good skateboarder on some degree, and I think that everybody is what makes skateboarding so much fun.  The people you can meet out of just skateboarding is awesome.  I can honestly say that, skateboarding has done a lot of good for me in the past eight years.  It keeps me out of any serious trouble, helps me develop creative and innovative skills, and it allows me to be a part of a culture that is full of free expression and good wholesome people.
Skateboarding also gives back a lot of unforgettable memories.  From seeing friends land their first tricks, getting tickets, discovering new spots, to laughing at us bail on film.  You get a lot more out of skateboarding than some people would think.  Skateboarding to me, is something I'm thankful for and proud to be a part of.  I highly recommend skateboarding to anyone!
