Pro And Am Q&A: Sunday, September 16, 2007

Q&A With Greg Brewer
with Vaughn Whynot

Greg Brewer….where the hell have you been. Last time I saw you, you where throwing down kick melons on the 2way in Lunenburg at my comp... Well let’s do this Q&A so I can find out what you have been up too.

VW - State your name, Age, hometown, sponsors, if you’re pro or am?

GB - I'm Greg Brewer I'm 21 years old and my sponsors are Real Skateboards, Spitfire Wheels, Thunder Trucks, and Vans Shoes.

VW - So Mr. Brewer, how are your new sponsors treating you…and do you miss the east coast…are we east coast…I didn’t do well in geo?

GB - ha-ha oh yes its East alright.  The sponsors are pretty kick-ass right now.  They've all been super nice.  I just got back from a trip to the states with Vans for an article in Concrete so I'm pretty hyped on that.

VW - Skateboard Set-up right now?

GB - Deck- Real 8 and 1/4.  52 mm Spitfire Wheels. Reds Bearings, 147 Thunders Trucks.

VW - Your Part In “Homegrown Slightly lit Video”, which was your fav places to skate in your part and out of everyone else in that video…who did you get more pumped off of?

GB - That’s a tough one.  Montreal and Toronto are both awesome cities but I think Toronto was pretty fun.  I was super pumped off all the guys we were there with.  I'd never really met any of the boys until then so it was really fun to get to meet them for a trip like that.  Everyone was awesome on that trip for sure.

VW - Skate Video You Can’t wait to see?

GB - The Fallen Video, Lakai if it ever comes out.  A new flip video would be rad too but I don't know if they're even doing one right now.

VW - What 1 trick your love doing these days and well hate even trying?

GB - Hardflips.

VW - Non-Skateboard Sponsor You Wish You Had?

GB - Alexander Keith’s or Wendy's.

VW - One thing to tell kids about skateboarding…and reason why you’re still doing it?

GB - Just have fun doing it mainly.  It's the best way to mellow out and meet new people.  If you’re having a good time that’s all that matters and people will see that.

VW - This is one question I had to ask because it’s always on my mind…what are your views on this helmet law in Canada

GB - shi*tTY!!!  If I hit my head it's my own fault.  Someone could slip on ice or trip off a curb and hit there head but you don't need helmets to walk on an icy sidewalk.  I hope.

VW - One trick you wish you had on lock down?

GB - Switch three flips.

VW - Craziest road trip/demo/skate sesh?

GB - The Homegrown one was fun and the Vans one I just got back from.  But when a bunch of us from Fredericton and Moncton went to Calgary and ended up getting to skate in Slam City Jam.  That was pretty much the funniest thing ever!

VW - Am and Pro you’re pumped of?

GB - Appleyard, Reynolds, Rowley.

VW - Last scrape you were in?

GB - I try to stay out of trouble, but I almost went in the police patty wagon the other day for trying to throw a giant road barrier over a fence ha-ha.  As soon as I herd the brakes of the truck the officer had my face up against the side of the truck and my arm wrenched around my back ha-ha.  Luckily some randoms saved me and told the cop that a car had just ran into the barrier and they saw me fixing it.  He told them that they could fit in the truck too and better leave now.  So they walked away.  I ended up talking my way out of it because I had New Brunswick ID and I was “Just visiting for 3 days."  Then he was cool with it.  He actually said this stupid line that sounded like some sort of slogan ha-ha.  “You enjoy Vancouver.  You do not destroy it!"

VW - Song you’re real into these days.

GB - I dunno I like to keep a good mix of everything.

VW - So G-brew when you coming down to Lunenburg way. We need some beer and you need to destroy the Lbc Park, while I am drunk and watch…hope to hear form you soon...and maybe see you skate.

GB - Hopefully I'll be in New Brunswick around Christmas time.  Maybe next summer I'll make a trip again and get to check the new Halifax Park out and come down to Lunenburg and see all the boys.

Lata.  Peace!

Q and A with Bruce Treby

20 Questions with Bruce Treby

Questions Asked By Vaughn Whynot

Answers by Bruce Treby

Photos by Scott McClellan

State Your Name, Age & current Location you are at?

Bruce Treby, 21, and I live in Little Harbour, NS

How’s she going?

Things are going great! I’m healthy, back in school and skating as much as I can when the weather is good. It’s been raining for almost a month straight now.

So Bruce when you were a kid, what made you start skaten?

I started skating when I was in grade 7 cause I seen a few older guys doing it and it looked fun. I tried it once and was hooked!

Who did you look up to when growing up (pros, People)?

I mostly looked up to the local guys but for pros I really like Deawon Song and Jamie Thomas

So who are your sponsors these days…and how did this happen, where you a video-tape kid or did they find you?

I ride for Homegrown Skateboards and Ipath Footwear.  Homegrown just kinda found me and I got hooked up with Ipath after “The Burning Whale Project” was released.

It must have been fun filming parts for the Homegrown Video. Do you have an interesting story from the whole time filming?

Yeah, I had a great time filming. I’d say the most interesting story from the whole thing is that I was working 6 days a week and filming only after work and on Sundays. It made it interesting, especially when we had to drive a few hours to some spots. All in all it was a great time!

Hey Treby, do you mind me calling you Treby; do you have any hobbies besides skating?

Everyone calls me Treby, even my girlfriend does too! When I’m not skating I’m usually snowboarding or causing trouble for someone.

What are you views on the harassment skater get from, police, bikers/bladders and local mouths? Have you ever encountered arguments or fight because of being a skater?

I’m so sick of getting razzed and harassed by the police and other “authority figures”. I mean sure their doing a job but this whole helmet law thing has gone too far. I can’t count the number of times I’ve been kicked out of spots as soon as I roll up. I haven’t gotten in a fight but there have been some close calls.

Do you still believe skaten is about roots or is it something else these days?

I like to think skating is about roots but every little kid always asks who you’re sponsored by or if you’re pro or am and how could they get sponsored. I think a lot of kids are skating for the wrong reasons these days.

So anything coming up these days with you (mags, videos, new product) or you keeping low?

I’ve been keeping it pretty low key this year. It was a pretty rough one for injuries.

I saw that footy of your bail….your a real trooper for getting back into the scene, I also heard you where more worried for your tattoo then your body, what was you thinking?

That was a rough little patch for me but I’m good to go now. Yeah I didn’t realize how serious it was until after the surgery but your right. I was worried bout my tattoo. I went back to the rail and cut the kink off to keep it for a trophy and decided to try it again and slammed on my face. Lost a tooth and knocked myself clean out. I didn’t know who anyone was or what happened for a good 10 or 15 minutes. Needless to say I’m not going back…lol

Here are a few simple questions, Fav AM this year?

Ryan Decenzo

Fav Pro?

Jereme Rogers, He’s so well rounded on everything.

Last Skate Video you watched?

DVS skate more

Last Mag you read or book?

I haven’t had time for anything but school work….

Biggest Fear?

Not scared anymore. I already lost a tooth skating…might get one for Christmas though!

Trick you’re stoked on? Trick your trying to get down?

Pretty much anything on a rail. And I’ve been trying to get tre flips…..

Saying over used?

Do you think Skate Style is Important, and is this g-unit and/or emo getting out of hand?

Thanks for your time…hope to see you kick'in around the area around here. Any last words or props for anyone? P.S. Did you see the Hali-Park, She’s looking sexy.

Thanks to Jesse at Homegrown, Shayne and Mike at S & J for the Ipath gear, Brad Macdonald, Travis Francis, Scott Maclellan and everyone else I’ve forgotten you know who you are.

When you think skateboarding, video usually comes next in mind. Nowadays, pretty much any kids with a part time job can afford a relatively decent video camera and edit movies on the familly computer. They then post their videos on Youtube or such, show it to their friends and familly and try to get some sponsors...

Still, good independant local amateur videos dont come out often and rarely reach national distribution. Being that it really isint a lucrative business, considering the amount of time and dedication required, one would have to be almost crazy to take upon such a project these days...

Motivated and skilled, Jeremy Elkin is crazy like that. Taking it to the streets everyday, from Montreal to New-York and Boston, after 3 years in the making, Jeremy's Floorwork video will drop in may and is expected to be the bomb!

Q&A with the Floorworker.

Interview:
How and when did you start skating?
1992. It was a gang initiation thing.
Who were you skating with at first?
Myself.
What terrain were you riding at first?
Flat ground and a piece of wood with a 2 x 4 under one end.
Who were some early influences on your skating?
The bad, older kids with green hair and 42-inch waist jeans.
Do you enjoy skating in contests?
No.
How could contests be improved?
Weapons.
What is good / bad about being a pro?
Everything's good, nothing's bad.
What do you think of skate videos?
Less blah-blah-blah, more raw-raw-raw.
Which are your favorites?
Barbarians at the Gate.
Do you enjoy shooting video parts?
Oh, its the best!
Do you skate small stuff like curbs and parking bumps?
Exclusively.
Why are curbs not allowed in magazines and videos anymore?
They're not allowed anymore?!
When was the last time you saw a curb in a magazine or video? Do you skate vert ramps?
Not really. If I do, it’s toward the bottom where its flat.
Do you skate backyard pools?
I don't do pools.
What do you think of public concrete skateparks?
They’re a good place to sell shoe packages.
How could they improve the design?
By not letting complete boneheads design them.
Should skateparks copy real street spots like Love Park and EMB?
Yes, but security guards and homeless people should be included in the overall design.
How did you get on Emerica?
Bethany Regan is a close personal friend of mine.
What do you like about Emerica?
They're my bros and they pay for my crystal healing sessions in New Mexico.
Who do you skate with now?
Everybody.
Who are your favorite skaters of all time?
Tino Razo.

My Blog: EA's SKATE™
By: Eeh_Boi

The closest thing to being on a skateboard, Electronic Arts (Nasdaq: ERTS) announced September 19, 2006 that SKATE will be released for the PlayStation®3 system and the Xbox 360™ video game and entertainment system in 2007. SKATE will deliver the feel of skating through innovative controls, authentic cameras and a fully reactive skateboarding city. The game so far features professional skaters such as Danny Way, Jerry Hsu, Chris Cole, Jason Dill, Dennis Busenitz, and PJ Ladd, as well as a reactive city and relevant in-game cameras that capture and deliver the most authentic skateboard videogame experience to date.

"Our game offers a skate mecca for both skaters and gamers in search of the definitive authentic skating video game experience," said Scott Blackwood, executive producer, EA Black Box. "We’re focused on capturing the actual feeling of skating with the innovative control system, the physics driven animations, and the intelligent cameras working together to really deliver the closest thing to being on a board."

SKATE’s unique control scheme captures the true feel of skating versus the typical button mashing gameplay of past skating games (Thrasher's Skate And Destroy, Grind Session & The Tony Hawk's Pro Skater Series). Featuring physics-driven animations, gamers will have a unique gaming experience every time they pick up the controller since no two tricks will ever be the same.

Developed by EA Black Box in Vancouver, British Columbia, SKATE will deliver all the style, fun, creativity and culture of skateboarding without the countless hours of practice, broken bones and hospital visits. SKATE has not yet been rated by the ESRB.

There’s a few things going on over the next month for anyone who feels inclined to help out skateboarding in Vancouver. China Creek, The Plaza, Vancouver Youth Week… a facefull of fun’s to be had:

Thursday, Feb 15th at 6:15pm China Creek Clean-up: As you may or may not have noticed, the barrier disappeared from China Creek last week. The good news is that it was relocated to The Sweatshop by Fat Chris, Little Buddy, and Co., not to the scrapyard by the city maintenance crew. Thank yous can be directed to long-long-time skate scene support crew, The Jaks. There’s a few other small ramps still around though, and we’re going to be moving them on Thursday. Probably to the ghetto spot. Any help would be highly appreciated. After moving the ramps, go watch The China Creeps rip shi*t up at Pub 340.

Monday, Feb 19th Youth Week Meeting at the Douglas Park Community Centre: The Coalition is going to throw some kind of event for Youth Week (early May) this year and we’re going to do it in conjunction with the D.P.C.C. because our man Jeff Cole is in charge of the skateboard program there. I’m not sure of the exact time (early afternoon… around 1:00… I think) but I’ll update as soon as I know.

Monday, February 26th at 7pm - Park Board Meeting about The Plaza: Things are looking great for the future of The Plaza, and we want to make sure that it stays that way. Show the city administration types that we’re not spoiled kids who take skateparks for granted by coming to this meeting at the Park Board Administration Building (2099 Beach Drive) and telling everyone why The Plaza rules and should stay right where it is. Keep in mind that people who don’t want The Plaza there will be free to talk too. It’s better if there’s more of us.

Thursday, March 1st at City Hall - City Council Meeting about The Plaza: Because The Plaza is on both City and Park Board land, any decisions about its future have to be deliberated on in a whole whack of meetings. Again… not sure on the time, will update asap.

Now go watch Southern Slaughter, the new Bacon Skateboards video.

Oh yeah, and do something nice for your girl/boyfriend tomorrow, not ’cause it’s Valentine’s day but because it’s what you should do. Over and out.

My Blog: Just typing
By: iskatetoo

had about a week with no riding.

the weather has changed for the worst. we started out with mad snow and it looked like we were going to have great season but, mother nature seems to have abandoned us. we haven't gotten any new snow to speak of in about a month and the spring came in mid January. we thought we were getting that one week of nice sunshine and warm temps, then it turned to a month and a half of it. it seems that we a re cutting into that 110 inch base that we had and it is only February. at this rate i don't know how we are going to make it to July, (oh poor us we may only have to ride till June). it seems the comp season that should be in full swing is almost stagnant, no one wants to ride slushy pipe with crumbling walls or 60 footers with sloppy lips and rutted landings.

good news! i am moving to Peru for a few weeks then to Argentina in the summer (it's great to have a wife from south America) so i get to ride all year long. come back here for next season all ready to hit the comp season with no down-time to cool off.

this is my blog so i do have the right to rant now and then and now is one of those times.

this is about corporate America. to be specific, advertising. have you ever just been watching the tube when a commercial comes on with music in the background of a  band that a bunch of money grubbing, exploiting, sons of bitches should never even know about?the latest exploitation in this long list is "THE KING", yes boys and girls BURGER KING.
now before i go on i want to let all you kiddos know that i am not talking out my ass. i myself for a short time was a member of the corporate rat race. class of 1997 Penn state masters in business administration focusing in advertising, (my head is hung in shame). if you watch the tube at all you know about "THE KINGS" latest marketing campaign. using the retro big headed king suit from the 70's to try to get the baby boomer peoples coming back to "THE KING". they give out the vid games with the big head king to the gen"Y"  kiddos to get them to come in. now, now, those f*cking chicken hawks have gone after the gen"x"ers (thats my generation). paying off, (or even buying the rights from the record label I'm not sure) the "Violent Femmes". now it might now be seen as a big deal to a lot of people, but you have to realize when this song was written (1988) it wasn't even allowed to be played on college radio stations because of other songs on the album. do you  see the irony in this? but wait, lets take a look back at what has been done in the  past few years to make you dislike songs and bands that are great or even good just because it has gone main stream. 2002 Garnier using the Transplants, 1999 Nintendo using the butt hole surfers, 1997 Nintendo using the dead milkmen, 2000 - today Sony using anything off any tony hawk poop skaters video game. my point is this. if a company or business needs to use song and dance to make peoople come to their stores and or restaurants then their products probably arent good. so by buying into their sterotyping and image that if you buy their products or eat thier food you will be cool and unique you are actually falling into croud of the lemmings headed for the cliff. do youself and our nation a favor, STOP BUYING INTO CORPORATE RULE. THINK FOR YOURSELFS AND DICTATE THAT YOU DECIDE WHAT YOU BUY, AND NO AMOUNT OF DECEIPT AND LIES IS GOING TO DECIDE WHERE YOU SPEND YOU MONEY.

kids get off you fat asses and learn to skate don't play it. do you understand that when you play skating you make it football. i helped make skating what it is today by buying boards, braking bones, and sitting in my driveway practicing tricks for hours on end, even a amature sponsorship for a few years. by turning it into a sport you are killing what we all did. oh well we're killing the earth so you will have no place to breath, paybacks a bitch.

Saturday the 20th was the first test run of the Scoff Project. Rob our test skater signed the waiver agreement and we were off to the location. He scoped it out pumped the ramp some to get a feel for it and we went inside to watch a skate video to pump him up. The it was time we brought out the mattress pads for him to land on.
After that I can't say much, we will be keeping the project some what hush during filming/documenting of it. Lets say though if it was a 6ft launch ramp it would be perfcet but at 8ft it was more like a quaterpipe. The tranny was to steep and shot him 10x10 in the air.

He didn't hit the ramp either bailed right at the top of the ramp, heres the only teaser we can give you guys right now.

He is still alive and alright. He'll be out for a few days. Once he recovers hes ready to hit it again.
Some major changes will need to be done to the tranny before the next test run. Maybe 1-2 weeks till the next run.
