Mark Appleyards Mom just called me to inform me
Jake Phelps along with a team of skaters are coming from Australia to Skate Black Pearl Tomorrow, so everyone this side will be out to watch. I will keep everybody updated as to who is coming tomorrow.
Slap Magazine visited Cuba, I heard they had a blast, they also left without shoes, socks, and skateboards as these people over there love to skate so if you have any boards or completes you would like to send over let me know as we have flights every week Fridays and Mondays. Lets keep them skating as equipment is difficult to come by.
Check out in Google search, skateboarding in Cuba, I found a websight, skateboard chrisis in Cuba, there is some great footage of their park and also their struggles when they break a board. When you see this you will feel so luky that as for you all you need to do is go online or check out your local skate shop. THEY HAVE NONE!!!!

D.O.P.E. is coming!!!!
DEATH OR PRISON EVENTUALLY!!!!!
A true story about the greats of Skating
Bruce Logan World Champion 1975 76
Dogtowns Jay Adams maybe the skater who revolusionised skateboarding
Dennis Martinez world Chmapion
Christian Hosoi the skate star of the 80s
D.O.P.E. tracks the Rise and Fall and Redemption of Four major skateboard legends.
Stunning archival footage and current HD interviews take you on a rollercoaster ride through heaven and hell, where the highs of championship trophies are followed by the lows of addiction, homelessness, prison and death. Original music by Grammy winners ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT, P.O.D> and SWITCHFOOT along with some exciting new musical groups is perfectly married with the gritty narration of famed actor DANNY TREJO. The Rise is steep the fall is brutal and the Redemption nothing less than miraculous.

Nobody"s going to get up for popcorn during this film; I coudn't turn away for a second.
WATCH IT
-Actor Danny Trejo

D.O.P.E is DogTown with a message. I've skated all my life, and write this with a broken wrist from skating. This film is all about brokenness, but so much more, this film is about redemption!!!

-Jim Moriarty, CEO Surfrider Foundation

Everyone pretty much knows that drugs wreck LIVES, but somehow the message doesn't seem to hit home enough to stop people from doin' 'em D.O.P.E. delivers the point with both barrels. With unflinching cander and unfeigned grit, the amazing story of one of skateboarding's founding legends; Dennis Martinez speaks with authority that transcends wards of power that will change lives.

-Skateboarding Legend Rodney Mullen

This movie shows how any person at the top of their game can be taken over by the uncontrolled power of drugs and be changed forever. You can only ride the edge so far before you FALL.

-Professional Skateboarder, 6 times X Games Champion Bucky Lasek

A Fascinating glimpse into the rise , fall and redemption of some of the world's greatest
- Michael Brooke, Publisher, Concrete Wave

In sharing this with you all I feel is blessed to be a part of this.
Like last year
Myself and Dennis Martinez are going to be going into the schools in the Cayman Islands to share this message and then on the 31st May 2008 we will be showing the movie in one of the local Cinemas.
Being in Law Enforcemnet I have had first hand experience seeing people make the wrong decision to get involved in drugs. I have seen families torn appart, people die because of drugs, do time, and suffer illnesses which have lead also to eventuall death.

Dennis Martinez is someone who has lived it at the top earning over $40,000.00US per month in the 1970's, he had alll sponsorships, shoes, boards, cars all the trimmings being the top dog in skating, he then threw it all away for drugs. Imagine  he pawned for $500.00US  of DOPE his pride and joy his WORLD CUP which he set his eyes on from the age of 12 years old. He lived on the streets saw his freinds die, robbed for a living to also feed his drug habit. He did time in prison; then something changed he now has a life he is a tireless worker for the better. He now pasters to CAT 4 prisoners he shares his experience so others do not make the same mistakes he and others made. I advise all to watch this movie as their are lessons to be learned by all
if you use drugs think about what help is out there seek it and get off it and if you know people do the right thing as a freind help them. THE LIFE YOU SAVE MIGHT BE YOUR OWN.
If you come to the Cayman Islands to skate BLACK PEARL you can say hi cause I will be there. a skater and PROUD FARTHER of
Brian 16
Sean 7
Juliana 2 she also skates
They skate and can be seen at Black Pearl

Road Trip to Sydney, Cape Breton - Nov. 8th, 07

Motivated by new skate parks and seemingly endless great weather this fall, we packed the car and hit the road Friday morning (October 5th) stoked for a fun packed weekend on Cape Breton Island. After many hours of gibber-jabber road banter we abruptly pull over to check out a rail in front of a church. Bruce & Mike are feelin' it and to the failing light a rail session goes down. A sweet end to a long day spent in the car. (Photos: After noon day prayer Mike Bernier Front Boards and Bruce Treby Back 50-50's, avoid the scourge of God, and leave one hard working' (old) rail something to be proud of.)

Not too early, but earlier than I like there's rustling in the room, the boys are pumped to get going, ah, its so easy! We stayed at the Beacon motel which is right across the street from the new Coxheath Skatepark. A Spectrum Concrete creation, the park has lots to offer once last night’s milk shakes/vomit are sopped up, pre-breakfast roll around in the heat of the October sun. Props to Megan Detheridge, Jim Barnum and everyone else in the community that have made Coxheath a reality, a huge asset to Sydney and a real training ground for the local skaters.

After getting our fill and checking out of the Beacon, we headed out on a "shore tour" to make the most of the afternoon. Our first stop is Glace Bay to check out a new bowl, also the work of Spectrum Skateparks. This would be the first "above ground" concrete bowl I've ever skated. Above ground you say? Why's that? "Well son; ya see, this whole area is right contaminated" from all the industrial work that went down here. "O I see so now its recreational land for the kids, OK THEN!" (Sydney area has huge industrial history)

Anyhow really fun, high speed corners with extensions for the Gnarl and a spine into a mini bowl to get the young ones into it. Well built and no graffiti yet! Fresh & new, nice job people. While I enjoyed the trany and caught up with local Steve Waden, Bruce drew a flood of kids to a "dangerous in every way" rail across the lot. The situation became a heat score so we carried on down the shore... (Photos: Mike Bernier 50-50's large hubba @ Glace Bay; Chug chug, Mike and Bruce get safe in someones boat)

The scenic coastline led us back to the Sydney waterfront where we found a nice high stage/wheely setup. Good times till the sun dropped and the wind off the water chased us back to the warmth and safety of the Delta hotel. After setting in to a few cocktails the fitness room, pool & hot tub facilities entertain us for the evening. There were some tense moments in the pool when Bruce Ass charlied some kid in the back coming out of the waterslide real fast, the Dad was right there watching the whole thing and yelled at his kid and made him cry adding insult to injury, we sighed relief and took off to Megan's house for some late night BBQ action.

Sunday mornin' brings a quick dip for the boys while Watson sleeps... fancy breakfast @ the Delta with Bruce, naked in a complementary robe, Bernier, and infamous Mackel. The service and food were probably the worst we've ever ate, especially for the price. Stopped in the elevator after by an old couple enjoying the small amount of time they have left, got to experience; one more punch, and entered complaining. Mackel found hair in his eggs. Or egg in his hair...Back to the car bound for home. Sydney folk are super hospitable (surprise surprize) and we all agreed that returning to the island is a must. A good example that you don't have to go far to find new spots, good times and interesting culture.

Basic info, when and where were you born and where are you residing now?

April 7th 1988, born and raised in Vars, Ontario (Ottawa) and currently residing in Whistler B.C.

Why Whistler?

We’ll I’ve been snowboarding longer than I’ve been skateboarding and growing up I had always heard how good it was to live in Whistler. I had never planned on moving up here until my good buddy Karl Windle moved up, told me all about the Creekside Skatepark and how I could still skate all winter. After hearing all the good news I moved up for the season last year and now I can’t picture myself being anywhere else during the winters.

Photo Russell Brown.

How long do you plan to stay in Whistler?

I was planning on coming back every season for the next few years, but now that the Creekside Skatepark might not be here next year I might not be coming back………

When did you start skateboarding?

I started skateboarding in grade 7 just staying after school using all my friends’ boards. Then on my 13th birthday my family and I were in Victoria, so using all my birthday money I bought some second hand board from a skateshop down there as my first board.

Who do you usually skate with?

Anyone who’s down to skate like ALL the Orleans locals, FOKUS boys, EQ guys, Mitch Barrette, Matt Canadien, and my little brother Nick Gauthier

You recently got hooked up with Annum clothing, what has that been like working with them?

Working with the Annum guys Steve Wilson and Brendan Cavanagh has been sick. I only met them last year and since they’ve put me on their team I’ve become good friends with them. Instead of them just giving me free product like most companies they let me be a part of the company. I’ve been helping with some designs and other business aspects while they’ve been showing me all the tricks of the trade. They’ll be having a bunch of new clothes coming out soon so keep your eyes open for it.

Where have you traveled skating?

This past year was the first year I started taking actual skate trips besides to Montreal.

I was living in Whistler for most of the spring so I skated around there for a bit, and then moved to Port Coquitlam for 2 months. I skated mainly the Poco Park, and didn’t get any filming done the whole time I was in Vancouver. I ended up getting ragged on from all my buddies back home for that. Then moved back to Ottawa and took a trip up to Quebec City, MTL, then me and some buddies took an epic week long road trip down to Austin, Texas.

Favorite skate spot?

The Creekside underground mini bowl.

Got any travel plans for this year?

I want to live in downtown Vancouver for most of the summer, then take a greyhound from Vancouver back to Ottawa, stopping at all the big cities to skate and see some friends, and then a few more trips to the states. Then where ever else I get a chance to go travel and skate.

New Years resolution?

To stop falling on my wrists.

What is up with your wrist, it seems like you have been rocking casts for the last 6+ months?

Yeah about that…….well a few years ago I broke my right hand scaphoid and ended up getting a bone graft from my hip to my wrist along with a cast for 5 months. Then the next year I broke it again, ended up getting another bone graft from my other hip along with a pin and a cast for 4 months. I find out in a few weeks when I’m getting the pin removed. As for my left wrist I found out just over a month ago that I’ve had a small broken bone in there for most of the summer that I didn’t know about. Since I never got it checked out it’s too late to fix it, so now I have a broken bone in that wrist permanently. It sucks sometimes………..

Shout outs?

Thanks to my Mom and Dad for everything they’ve done for me, my brothers, all the older guys I looked up to skating, Garrett Dagenais, Jesse Ringer, J.I.P.S, everyone that’s helped me out, Annum Trading company, and to Lenny for making this happen.

                                          D.A.R.E. TO SKATE

There is an up coming skateboard comp whicch I want to let you know about, in fact it is the first time this comp has been heald any where.
The comp is called D.A.R.E. TO SKATE, the purpose is:
1. To raise money for the D.A.R.E. program so it can continue in the schools and be expanded so it can be available in all schools including those in Cayman Brac.
2. So the kids who skate at Black Pearl and in Cayman Brac have an opportunity to skate in a comp (not yet determined when)in Tampa USA.
Now let me tell you how it will be set up.
This week coming I will be releasing the details to the press of D.A.R.E. TO SKATE, I will also be going to local businesses and asking for their support through sponsorship for a worthy cause.I will be getting T shirts printed D.A.R.E. TO SKATE I will also be inviting Government members to attend the event which will path the way for the Cayman Islands Government accepting skateboarding as a great healthy sport, this will be a great opportunity for the park to get some recognition as a fantastic facility which is not yet realised by most as they do not see the extent of the park on the outside.
I will also go into most schools on the Island encouraging both Boys and Girls to sign up.
The event will be open to kids from Cayman Brac and will be broken down into age groups so there will be 4 groups by age.
The event I am hoping will be judged by 2 or more pro skaters as we intend to bring some down to demonstrate the park to guests and also this will demonstrate a fair judging system as these guys are from outside the Cayman Islands and also they know what to look for in a skater.
The event will also encourage the whole family to attend as there will be time for kids and parents to try skateboarding. Bouncing castles, wall climbing activities will also be out there so all can participate in something. The D.A.R.E. tent will be there so parents, care givers, teachers, kids will get to know more about the program and how the kids will benefit.
The other great item we have hear is the Surf Machine (only 3 in the world)the surf machine will be demonstrated and the public can also get wet (I wish them LUCK as it generates up to 16000 gallons a minute).
The comp will utilise different parts of the park as there are so many areas to choose.
Available prizes are as follows.
Skate equipment DVD'S shoes, other skate realated items. A feather light board with Mike V's signature and last seasons Drive series on DVD's are also up for grabs.
The big prize is 4 airline tickets to Tampa Fl, and (accomodation if I can get it) and entrance into a comp.
So the kids have a lot to practice for; as the comp will take place at the end of JUNE 2007.
The organizers of D.A.R.E. have already offered to put the comp on their website which will be great for us in Cayman.
Like I said in Field Of Dreams and also my first Blog WATCH OUT WE ARE ON OUR WAY!!!!!
We are featured in Concrete Wave (spring issue) my son Sean 6 years is featured in two pictures in the article.
If anybody wants to come down and support the local kids or assist you are most welcome, just hail me up and I will let you know the details, I also have good contacts to get discounts for people who help.
If there are any pro skaters who read this and are interested let me know as for you it is an excuse to ride the ultimate park which we get to ride everyday, and an opportunity to visit the stingrays>

                                                DENNIS MARTINEZ
Next week Wednesday Dennis Martinez former world champion skateboarder is coming down hear. He is also coming to skate my ramp which was in Field Of Dreams he will be skating in front of the Bonaventure Boys home kids and also sharing his message with them. I am originaly from England, I first made a skateboard out of a peace of wood and half a roller skate, which I used on a incline near to a bus stop, the amount of times a bus went over it and I had to make a new one.
I moved to Grand Cayman in 1988 and since then I have joined the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service. My interest is making a difference in young peoples lives. To me thats what it is all about inspire them to keep out of trouble, it gives me less to do with them, however the job never stops.
In 2003 Mr. Mike Bell an Entrapreneur broke ground on a skatepark, nobody really knew how big it was going to be; was it going to be a bowl or a couple of humps to ride over (nobody knew). I use to go with my kids and the wife, Sean 3 years old then rode a big board on his knees, however he had no fear and rode down all the heavy ramps. His mother stopped going because she was scared to see what he was doing. Brian was 12 years old and he was learning the basics. Anyway the park continued to grow until one day that was it, it stood before us. If anybody comes to Black Pearl guranteed it takes your breath away. We have had Tony Hawke, Burnquist, Scheckler, Bam, Darin naveret, Sam Hitz, Pete Hewitt, Mark Appleyard, Steve Nesser, Dayone Song, Brian Patch, Patt Duffy, Jimmy The Greek, Steve Olson, and so many others including Mike Vaellely skate the park, THey are all impressed by what the park has, EVERYTHING>
During my time going to the park I did not realize what I had right in front of me; I am always trying to find ways to get through to kids. I once went to the boys home in Grand Cayman and I was having a difficult time getting through to them, so I mentioned skateboarding. They all suddenly changed from being nervouse to talking enthusiatic, I asked them if they would like a movie night they all agreed. The next week I took Sean and Brian and a pro skateboarder. the pro told them what he does for a living, where he is building a house (Brazil) and where in the world he has been. These kids were listening and we had there input also. We watched TWIGGS by Element and they were glued to their seats.
After the evening finished I asked them would thye like to visit Black Pearl, they all agreed. So the next Saturday we went and I had the kids at the park who skate help these non skaters, I was amazed to see them working together, I was satisfied when I saw the smile on their faces when they rode down a ramp with out falling. One kid was even trying fly outs and he had never been on a skateboard before.
The local Tv station and News Papers did a story on the event which to me was a great success.
After seeing the reaction of these kids I decided the best way to go on was to research building a ramp. I saved some money (a lot as things are expensive hear). And with the help of Mr. Philip Berry the mose respected skater at the park even the pro's show their respect as believe me he can skate street with the best. WE decided on a spott my back yard, Philip I must admit did most of the work as he knew exactly what he was doing. The ramp was completed and my kids skated it, I invited local kids round to the house and I gave boards to the ones who did not have their own. Some time after Lost Clothing came to the Island shooting a movie. I spoke to them showed them pictures of the ramp and it was set they would skate it. They came to the house and we had local kids there as well. At the time we had a trampoline and the kids (I Meen the pros) had a great time. Patt Duffy, Brian Patch, Jimmy The Greek and others showed off their moves, however the one who took the day was Juliana my daughter the skateboarding baby she was under 8 months old going up and down on the ramp. All this was on film later it was shown on Fuel TV, they even put me on the websight as the chief of police, I did say Sorry to the Boss.
The Cayman Compass did a big story which was good publicity for skateboarding.
Some time after Mike Vallely and Mark Jeremias came to Black Pearl to do a movie called DRIVE I spole to them and showed them picture of our ramp; which by the way has the best back drop THE CARIBBEAN OCEAN. And they both liked the idea of including the ramp, they also asked me if I could do an interview as they were intrigued to see a cop promoting skateboarding ( imagine a COP who skatebaords and supports it). ON the Saturday Mike V and Mark came to the house , he had a mini ramp session with the local kids and the skateboarding baby came out again and showed off her moves. The funny thing was Mark had to re do the shot so I put juliana on the board and she was going up and down and some body said something is wrong as her head went towards the board, she fell asleep and I caught her in my arms. Mike then Interviewed me in Full uniform on the ramp, it went pretty well, however it was really hot I got sunburn. The local media came to the house also and did there part to promote which was good.
Recently we had Addict skateboards doing some video footage for Havoc.com at the house. Packy who skates for addict, an amateur called Aryeh Kraus who works for a skate shop in Cali and Keith Johnson ( Aryeh did a DVD called RIGHT STATE OF MIND) if you can get that dvd you will be stoaked it is fantastic skateboard footage, I have never seen a manual that keeps going like the Energizer Bunny.
They came around and did there stuff. A couple of weeks ago I got a copy of DRIVE FIELD OF DREAMS from Mark and I made copies and shared it with Department of Tourism who told the UK office they got in touch with me and asked me to do a BIO and story about skateboarding. Local News Papers did a story, radio Cayman interviewed me. CITN local TV did a story and showed 45 seconds of Field Of Dreams, they bigged up MIke V, Mark, and FUEL TV.
A law enforcement association in the US have asked me to do a presentation on what I do with skateboarding. Concrete Wave also asked me to do a story Skateboarding From the point of view of a COP>
Field of Dreams came out on 8th April 2007 and has been shown regularly on Fuel TV. The show will aire also in May 2007 so if you have not seen it check it out.
Cayman Compass came to the house and did another story which was in the news paper on Tuesday April 17th 2007 it featured me the kids and also one of our friends who visits us with his parents from Colorado Alex Brunelle who skates the competition circuit in the US he is 14 years old and he is very good at skating.

So we have action in the Cayman Islands.
I am sharing this with you all as I do have a message to share. It does not matter how old you are, what colour you are , where your from, what sex you are, if you are religouse or not, the colours you wear. Skateboarding crosses boarders. Any kid who picks up a skateboard is a winner as they are following pioneers, people who sacrificed, Blood, Sweat, Broken Bones, to make the sport what it is today, nearly every TV programe has skateboarding in it so it is now main stream and getting bigger.I feel Bob Burnquist has paved the way for the Olympics as he carried the Olympic Torch on a skateboard through the streets of RIO.
I am doing my part to make a difference, do the same in your community.
I live on an Island 27 miles long and 8 miles wide I am making change in more ways than one, which is being heard around the world. Cayman is not even on some maps and yet the voice of one who has a dream is being heard. If you have seen Drive, Field of Dreams you have heard my passion, I intend to share this with others so they are inspired to do the same.It Takes ONE TO CHANGE.
Remember one thing Like the late BOB Marley said in song "ONE BLOOD" that is what we are so if you are one who does "HATE" STOP THE HATE!!! SKATE FOR LIFE !!! SKATE FOR CHANGE>

He’s been traveling the world sharing his skateboarding and message of individuality and self expression ever since. Mike’s current sponsors include Element, Destructo Trucks, Speed Metal Bearings, Sobe, and Jeep.

“For me, ‘DRIVE’ is what skateboarding and action sports are all about -- lifestyle and accessibility, true grass-roots connection, and community,” says Vallely. “When I started skateboarding this was what I found to be true and what I believed in. This is what attracted me to skateboarding. And this is the vision I've always had for what I wanted to do as a professional skater. I truly get to live every mile.”

“DRIVE” is produced by Build Worldwide. The series is created and directed by Mark Jeremias, and this season is shot on location throughout North America, Israel, and the Cayman Islands. In one segment, Mike visits the South in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and takes a raw look at how the skateboarding community has adapted to the displacement and havoc that the disaster caused.

“We’re really happy with the storylines that have developed this season,” says Jeremias. “From White Hall, Arkansas to Jerusalem, Israel, it’s always rewarding to see that no matter where we go in the world, people connect with Mike’s message and how ‘DRIVE’ is able to capture and convey that message in a way that both skaters and non-skaters can relate to.”

“The viewer response we had from the first season was so strong that we ordered another run of seven episodes plus a special surprise bonus eighth episode,” says Shon Tomlin, FUEL TV’s VP of Programming and Development. “This new season builds on the same themes of the past, but also sheds new light on unlikely skate havens like the Middle East and hurricane-stricken New Orleans. Mike’s remarkable talent for getting to the heart and soul of skateboarding is both powerful and entertaining.”

Look for the new season of “DRIVE” on FUEL TV beginning April 1, 2007. Original episodes premiere on Sunday nights at 8:00 pm ET/PT during the “Stacked Sundays” programming block and re-air several times throughout the week. The series is seven weeks long and will feature a bonus eighth episode airing in FUEL TV’s Friday night “Skate @ 8” skateboarding block later in the spring.
