I have a question regarding music in vids.

There's a groups of skateboarders here in Taiwan worried about copyright issues.

Yeah I know, the very word "Taiwan" and the words "worried about copyright" just don't coincide in the same sentence in any normal circumstance, however ...there it is!

The guys I'm talking about here just got sponsored by Vans to do one of the first Taiwanese skate videos (it will be a free vid yet also a promotion for Vans) but are unclear as to how to go about getting the proper rights to the music in their film. What are their options?

If any of you movie-making gurus out there in the skateboard world could enlighten us with your tried-and-true wisdom on this matter... we would be hella stoked.

Thanks so much,

cheers from Taiwan_Vaughan, the Macho Team and the TSA

i think it would be great with its a taiwanese vans promo/video to have the music scene from the taiwan..there must be rock and other types from there...also you need to get ahold of the label not the band..and if this is for vans they would have to do it...
but alot of local bands are pretty down with doing this because it will give them "ads" like getting there names out fast..because skateboarding is high right now in the media

hope this helps

Having local bands in the film is a good idea, I'll raise it with them. That could indeed make it easier. And yes they do have a lot of local indie bands and hip hop crews here.

I do know that if we contact anyone it will be the label and not the band, but thank you again.

I'm more looking for info from film makers that have tried this before. I'd like to know what there experience was like; like what most of the labels have said in their replies to rights requests in the case of these kind of skateboard videos and what kind of deals were made, what specific protocols had to be put in place before rights were settled and everyone was satisfied with legalities etc. I'm sure with every case it is different.

Cheers,

V.

I usually make the music myself, but your best bet is to ask local unsigned bands, just to avoid the label getting in the way. It's a real pain having to deal with them, as they always seem to think you're going to make a ton of money out of their music and they breath down your neck more than they have the right to, at least in my own experience. So long as you sit beforehand with the band in question and draw a list with things you agree concerning rights to use and get it approved (I forget the term) through a lawyer, there shouldn't be a problem
